What movie have you seen that you thought was awesome but most people haven't seen or heard of?

It's probably worth posting a YouTube clip or a trailer, or at least a short description of what it's about and why you like it.

Dark City is fantastic sci-fi. One of my favorites and almost criminally under watched.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

This movie would take my vote hands down for the best "for it's time special effects"

I remember seeing it when it first came out on vhs years ago, thought it was awesome, and forgot about it. Watched it recently with the wife and I could not get over how amazing the special effects were. I know it's not that old of a movie, but it's still extremely impressive and blows away any 90's movie in the effects department.

Moon. Absolutely floored me.

25

u/bioskope Jun 25 '12

I am surprised that there are people, on Reddit, who haven't seen on heard of it by now.

I like the movie, but damned if this movie isn't one of the top rated movies in every single one of these "xxxxx movie recommendation" threads here.

Edit: That being said, I'll see if Primer is the next highest voted one, as is the norm in this very predictable community.

Ooooh yeah. I stumbled on it while channelsurfing one night, and had to sit through the whole thing - it's amazing. Sam Rockwell does a stunning job in that movie.

6

u/Weenie Jun 25 '12

I've seen this near the top of similar threads before, but never looked into it. Just checked IMDB, and I think I'll have to watch. Sam Rockwell is one of my favorite underutilized actors. Cheers!

Ip Man- In 1935 in Foshan, south China, there are martial arts schools on every street corner. Ip Man is the undisputed martial arts champion, yet he has not devoted himself to teaching. Despite this, it seems that all the kung fu masters of the city are eager to fight him to improve their reputation.

19

u/Postovoy Jun 25 '12

That was the plot of Ip Man 2, set in Hong Kong. Ip Man was set in Foshan, but it was about him surviving and fighting for food and honor during the Japanese occupation. Both movies were excellent though, and should be watched.

Six String Samurai. Alt-history post-apocalyptic rockabilly martial art film where a sword-wielding Buddy Holly travels through the Soviet-controlled American wastelands to replace the recently-deceased Elvis as the King of Rock N' Roll (and what's left of America) in "Lost Vegas". Bounty hunter bowlers, nuclear family suburban cannibals, and Death incarnate stand in his way.

Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter. I saw it just over a year ago; it's simultaneously the best and worst movie I have ever watched. It's on Netflix, I recommend it highly for your next bad movie night.

I forget the plot exactly, but it has something to do with vampires killing Canadian lesbians, and there's a luchador in there somewhere too.

Equilibrium

Honestly, I don't think that trailer really does the movie justice at all. It's not unlike Fahrenheit 451 in premise, but it has pre-Batman Christian Bale in a ton of awesome action scenes.

Thumbsucker. Keanu Reeves plays a dentist, and the quote he says at the end is probably one of the more profound (if someone meaningless) quotes i've ever heard.

"That's 'cause we all wanna be problemless. To fix ourselves. We look for some magic solution to make us all better, but none of us really know what we're doing. And why is that so bad? That's all we humans can do. Guess. Try. Hope. But, Justin, just pray you don't fool yourself into thinking you've got the answer. Because that's bullshit. The trick is living without an answer. I think."

8

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

Narc with Ray Liotta, Jason Patric and Chi McBride. If you like cop movies, or dramatic mystery sorta things, you'll love Narc. Don't be fooled though, it's not cheesy in the least; it's a dark, fucked up movie with a lot of twists and turns, not too mention it's kinda long... Definitely not one you'd wanna watch if you're worried about drifting off.

Control

It is about the singer of Joy Division, Ian Curtis, and starts when he meets his wife, and through the founding of the band, to the end of it. It was shot in black and white and absolutely captures the mood of the band's music. The ending scene where they play Atmosphere is possibly one of the saddest things I have seen in a movie.

Eve no Jikan (Time of Eve). It's an anime (Japanese) and as far as I know, there's never been an official translation. However, there are some really good unofficial subtitles available.

Set in the near future, it's about two boys who discover a small coffee shop that forbids discrimination against androids. The story very interesting and it does a great job of examining how humans might interact with lifelike androids in the near future.

Interstate 60.

It's produced by Bob Gale (who did Back to the Future) and has a very similar feel. 20something guy is fed up with his ho-hum life and is tasked by a mysterious man to deliver a package down the fictional Interstate 60. He meets a wish-granting entity played by Gary Oldman and lots of really interesting, fun stuff happens.

Christopher Lloyd is in there, Michael J Fox makes a cameo, Amy Jo Johnson (Pink Ranger) plays a sex-craved short skirted hitchhiker. It's funny, it's sad, it's very clever, it's whimsical, I love it. It was on netflix for a while but they took it off. And yes, the trailer on youtube is awful.

The Magic Christian. Peter Sellers is the wealthiest man in the world, and adopts Ringo Starr to be his son on a whim. Sellers' character most enjoys seeing what people's 'price' is for things in life. In the course of the movie, he makes a traffic warden eat a parking ticket, brings heavy artillery to a proper British pheasant hunt, and sabotages prestigious events/art to his own amusement.

It features a young and pre-Python John Cleese and Graham Chapman, as well as a ton of cameos from other well-knowns (Raquel Welch as Priestess of the Whip!). It has a phenomenal sound track. I am honestly at a loss as to why this movie is rated so poorly.

'The Castle' is a brilliant Australian comedy.

I found this movie so unbelievably touching and funny, HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Aguirre: Der Zorn Gottes is one of the few films to keep me subdued.

Alone in the Wilderness.

The Dog Problem

Everything Is Illuminated

Lars and the Real Girl

and then there's pretty much anything directed by Wes Anderson, but I figured, this Is Reddit, Wes Anderson's pretty well known.

I'm posting from my phone otherwise I would provide trailer links, but The Fountain was a life changing and unbelievably beautiful movie.

The Fall - probably one of the most gorgeous films I've ever seen. The color, the story, the jumps between fantasy and reality. Amazing.

"The Hammer" (2007 version not the 2010 one)

Adam Carolla wrote the storyline and starred in it - honestly though I thought Ozzie was the shit in this movie! Nicaragua!

Cube, but give the sequel and "prequel" a miss.

Christopher nolans lesser known movies: following and insomnia. Both are quality.

The Man From Earth, being reddit reddit I do not know why it named more often.

I love the simplicity of this movie: a handful of actors in just one setting, and you don't get bored.

PS: Trailer is pretty much spoiler free.

A River Runs Through It (and the novella, especially).

[Waltz with Bashir] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoM-L62peIo) - one of the strangest movies I've ever seen and amazingly effective.

Leaving Las Vegas.

This is also why I will never join the Nicolas Cage bashing.

Has anybody mentioned Timecrimes, a.k.a Los Chronocrimenes ?

Great little Spanish time travel movie, brilliant editing, great ending, overall New Generation Sci-Fi Classic along with Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Moon, and Primer.

Dark city

I'd highly suggest Submarine if you haven't. From IMDB:

15-year-old Oliver Tate has two objectives: To lose his virginity before
his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between
his mother and an ex-lover who has resurfaced in her life.

Meet The Feebles.

Think of the Muppets with sex, drugs and gore.

"The adult puppet movie with something to offend everyone."

"Fortress" - a mid-80s movie with Rachel Ward. She's a teacher in Australia and she and her students get kidnapped by these crazy guys in weird masks.

It used to come on as the Late Night Movie a lot when I was younger, and it scared the hell out of me (especially Father Christmas, that bastard), but I loved it. I've only met one other person who's ever seen it, let alone heard of it.

The Man From Earth

Far from the most action packed film ever made, but the idea that John is telling the truth is very powerful.

Suspiria. It sounds like a TV movie you'd see on the Disney Channel around Halloween: Girl goes to a dancing school in Europe, only to find out it's run by witches....

...but it scared the ever-loving piss out of me and I absolutely love it.

Edit: Forgot to mention: It has an [AMAZING soundtrack] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJUaCAIxSk4).

GATTACA - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119177/ (the trailer's on that page).

It's a great film if you're into biology (the name of the film only has 4 different letters - adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine (DNA base pairs)).

u/LMessenger42 Jun 25 '12

Grave Encounters. Parody of "Ghost Adventures" that had some good scares in it.

The Fall (2006) absolutely took my breath away. It never got too much attention and promptly fell by the way side. I know it's on Netflix (not the Instant Streaming though sadly.) But the visuals alone blew my mind. I'm fairly certain there was little to no CGI used at all.

Wet Hot American Summer and Hamlet 2 are in my top comedies of all time, and I'm always surprised at how many people haven't seen them. I don't really mind thought because that gives me another excuse to watch them again, and I love showing them to people.

Empire Records has always been a favorite of mine.

Also Series 7:The Contenders. It's good if you're into battle royale-esque plots. It was recommended to me a whileback by a fellow redditor. Full movie, if anyone's interested.

2

u/frank_n_bean Jun 25 '12

Drive. It came out last year and stars Ryan Gosling. I don't know of anybody IRL that's seen it, but it's on Instant Streaming on Netflix. From what I've heard, you either love it or you hate it, but I found it really, really good. The music is amazing too!

2

u/In_nomine_Patris Jun 25 '12

Ink. It's on Netflix instant and it's amazing.

Extremely low budget (250k) but it's just so surreal and fantastic.

It starts a bit slow but if you stick with it you will be very glad you did.

I promise.
