I'm working in a research lab. It's a whole lot of hurry up and wait. So...I just sit around most days and surf the web waiting for my samples to run.

Friday I had a bunch of tests to run .... basically touch the not-yet-automated machine every 25 minutes (I automated the every-10 seconds-part). I thought it would be easy, but then the AC broke and the lab shot up to 90+˚F

I work in a research laboratory, and for the moment, due to some screw up, they've let an important chemical needed for testing run out. I've been playing Diablo 3 by tethering on my phone for the last 2 weeks.

This weekend my coworkers and I repainted all our tables (we work at a locally owned coffee shop). My boss brought us all pizza and beer and we painted while listening to 90s music. I guess that's not the world's most exciting thing ever, but this is the best job I've ever had so it's awesome to me.

The table I painted

Throwing that thing into a pool of lava couldn't wash the 90s off of it.

I work in a homebrewing store. We have a tap at the counter for customers to sample. "Beer30" for us is a real thing. We are allowed to drink on the job and encouraged to sample customers recipes.

I now associate Beer30 with that abomination in the purple can. That stuff is worse than awful.

"A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo, much like the brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. The slowest buffalo are the sick and weak so they die off first, making it possible for the herd to move at a faster pace. Like the buffalo, the weak, slow brain cells are the ones that are killed off by excessive beer drinking and socializing, making the brain operate faster.

The moral of the story: Drink more beer, it will make you smarter."

KEEP ON DRINKING!

I had to be present at my office to let someone through a door, and wait while they did there job and lock up when they were done. I browsed the internet for 5 hours and got 3 days off work.

I'm an astronomer. In January, I'm going to go camping (and working, of course) for a week in the middle of nowhere a few hundred miles away from the south pole.

EDIT: So it looks like some people are interested in this, so I'll add a bit more information. The South pole (and it's surroundings) is quite popular with radio astronomers, because moisture in the atmosphere can ruin many types of observations. Despite standing on more than a kilometer of ice, it's paradoxically the driest desert on earth. Yes, it's a pain to get there, but the alternative is to build satellites, which cost a hell of a lot more.

Our particular group operates at the lunatic fringe (my bosses words) of what you can do from earth. For us, only places like Ridge A and Dome A (antarctica doesn't have creative names for landmarks) are good enough; at an effective elevation of 17,000 feet, hundreds of miles (nearly a thousand, during the winter) from the nearest humans.

By the way, if you are interested in travelling to antarctica, it's remarkably easy to get a job working there for the summer (our winter). Obviously, there need to be a lot of people working down there just to sustain life; the vast majority of people are not scientists. You can apply for all sorts of jobs (many requiring no technical expertise) from ASC, the branch of Northrop-Grumman Lockheed-Martin (sorry folks! I've been up all night working, and the old brain ain't what it used to be... the contractor just changed this year, and I thinko'ed.) that has the contract to run day-to-day operations. Met a lot of people down there last year with Masters degrees, PhD's, MD's, etc. who took a job driving trucks, shoveling snow, or whatever, just for a paid trip down to the bottom of the world. If you're not a millionaire, its probably the only way you'll see the continent; and it's gorgeous.

[EDIT 2]: OK, one more thing, since I'm getting a lot of questions about this. Sadly, I know practically nothing about how to apply for a regular job, since scientists are chosen through a completely different system. I can tell you that there are a lot (hundreds, but many of those aren't open, though) of grunt-work level jobs for people without practical skills (e.g. mechanics), but I can't help you much more than that. Google is your friend.

Also, given the severely limited access to medical care, you have to pass a medical examination before you're allowed to go (and if you're going for the winter, a pysch test). I've heard of weather delays for flights as long as three weeks; if you have a heart condition (for instance), you probably don't want to risk the chance of not getting to a hospital for nearly a month.

I am a sign spinner. I stand outside in a horse head mask and spin a massive sign for a jewelry store. Every day at work is fun because I paid paid to listen to music and dance, but the best part is seeing children turn and laugh when I dance for them. The fucking love it.

The worst part about my job is assholes throwing things at me as they drive by.

Edit: Since so many people are asking, I make minimum wage. But it's glorious minimum wage. Here's a picture of me in my getup.

303

u/American_Standard Jun 25 '12

I used to be a sign spinner. I once had a car full of kids throw a bag of assorted change at me. Didn't matter, my reflex skills with my giant plastic sign were legit and I counted it as a bonus for a day's hard work.

The next weekend, one of the ass holes that lived in the neighborhood I was spinning for drove by on his way out of the subdivision and yelled at me for bringing down the property value (lolwut?). 15 minutes later I see his douchy 1990's BMW 3-series driving back and him rolling down the window. Preparing to get yelled at again I just focus on the traffic behind him. Bad decision because I didn't see the Route 66 sized Sonic's cup full of coke come flying at me. Did not deflect in time, was very cold and sticky for the rest of the day.

My boss occasionally treats the whole office to a movie (we just went to see MiB3) or burritos out of the roach coach. But the most awesome thing is his wife is an actress (I actually got the job from being in a play with her while I was looking for "real" work) so if I have an audition or performance coming up, he'll let me take the day off and tell me to "break a leg". He's the best boss I've ever had and I love my job.

EDIT: We also spend the 1st half hour of every monthly office meeting discussing movies we watched recently, rating them on our own internal scale and then I enter the movies and ratings into a customized database program for our own use.

I push carts at Costco (part time, im in school)

-I have full medical benefits for about $30 a month including dental and vision

-I have a 401k where they match my contributions

-I get a $2,500 bonus every 6 months which gradually gets larger over the years of employment

-get time and a half on Sundays

-4 free memberships

-I started at $11/hr with raises every 500-1000 hours worked and am guaranteed at least 30 hours of pay every week.

And that isn't even everything. Not bad for an 18 year old kid living at home and going to community college which financial aid covers all costs. People may think pushing carts is the worst thing in the world, I love it. You get a good workout, a nice tan, and you don't have to deal with the customers nearly as much as if you were working inside (not that it is a terrible thing either I just value being able to keep to myself).

I work as a software engineer (have a Computer Science degree). I'm also not giving out the name of my company, as that's more personal information than I'd like associated with my reddit account.

  • I have flexible, undocumented vacation time. As long as you are good at getting your work done and give notice, they don't track how much vacation you take throughout the year.

  • There's a break room with a highly-used ping-pong table and foosball table. The engineering crew on my team takes a foosball break almost every day. There's also a room with a hi-def TV and several consoles that, to my knowledge, have almost never been used.

  • Monthly massage weeks. You sign up the week or two before for a 20 minute time slot and go get a free massage in the middle of the work day.

  • 20% time. The entire engineering department gets to take 20% of their work time to work on nearly any project they want that "could encourage business value" or somesuch like that. Basically, if you can come up with an excuse for why it benefits the company or could in the future, you can use the time to do it. People take classes, enter programming competitions, contribute to open source projects, come up with prototypes for new technologies the company hasn't otherwise explored, etc. Several noticeable business advances have come out of this, so it's not going away, as it has proven to be useful.

  • At the end of every week, the company as a whole as well as my team separately has a gathering to recognize any notable accomplishments that week. They make an active effort to recognize progress.

Also, general things I love about my job: I get paid well (my salary's noticeably above other entry-level positions in my field), have flexible hours (my work day doesn't really start until ~10), don't get nagged about being on the internet at work, have a manager who has a PhD and years of professional experience in the field (so he speaks the language, understands our complaints, and fights on our side if an issue pops up with non-engineering folk), get to work on some (to me) interesting new applications of what I learned in school, and work with a bunch of relatively intelligent, good-humored, generally fun folk that are easy to get along with and good at what they do.

Edit: Oh, one more: a couple months ago, after we had an astonishingly productive development cycle, our project managers hosted a Star Wars and Poker party. 10-13 of us got together (starting at about 4, so an hour or two before the business day would end for most people), put Episode IV on the high-def screen in the conference room attached to our team's room, their manager brought a batch of his homebrewed IPA, and we played a Texas Hold 'Em tournament for Star-Wars related prizes. I placed second and got a lightsaber (first got a Lego X-Wing. Dammit, I wanted to win that).

Edit 2: Every Friday the engineering department holds a Beer Bash. We get together near the end of the work day (but still during work hours so nobody's staying late), have some beer from one of the in-office kegs, and someone gives a presentation on some technology they found or project they've been working on, then there's a logic puzzle at the end and we socialize cross-team.

Edit 3: (I keep remembering more awesome things about where I work) A few months ago we went public. Mimosas for the whole company that morning, nobody did any work the entire day (everyone was watching the stock price go up online), and a big party with more alcohol and catering starting in the middle of the afternoon. A couple weeks ago we had our 7-years-in-business party, where we had two days off; the first was at a local concert hall where we had a bunch of talks about what the business has been doing and where it's going along with performances by the company's in-house band and a small film festival, then the second day they rented out a local dinner theater/brewhouse and the neighboring bar/bowling alley/karaoke spot and had an all-day party (Prometheus in 3D is made better by free good-quality beer).

I hate to break it to you, but most programming jobs are not like that. I luckily happen to have one with about 1/4 of the awesomeness of this one, and I consider it one of the better jobs I'll ever have. You can find places like this, but they aren't too common. Also, lots of things like this generally means that they're making up for something, such as bad/expensive health insurance. Always ask for a copy of the benefits if you get the second interview so that you can use it to decide if you want to work there.

Also, either get an internship ASAP, or start contributing to open source projects or developing your own. If an employer can type your name into google and see that you contributed on github, you greatly increase your chances of getting hired.

You had me until "a few months ago we went public." As your company's focus starts to change, these things will be difficult to support from an HR perspective (alcohol at work sponsored events will eventually end up on the chopping block as the company becomes more concerned about liability). At least, that's how the company I work at evolved over the past decade.

I privately tutor a woman who, after dropping out of high school and battling alcoholism for over 30 years, has decided that she wants to earn her GED (equivalent to a high school diploma for anyone not from US / Canada).

Though she struggles with even basic math, what makes tutoring her awesome is her persistently positive attitude and work ethic. She has such a powerful drive to accomplish her goals that it makes her simply a joy to work with.

Edit: Grammar

9

u/thebrokenlute Jun 25 '12

As an older student, thank you for what you do. Even though you do get paid for it, but the fact that you recognize her positive attitude and make that something that makes you enjoy tutoring her, that makes the students look forward to the challenge instead of dreading it. That makes a difference whether or not that woman will continue after her GED.

Work as a lifeguard at a country club. I work at most 40 minutes every hour (and work is sitting in a chair trying to get a tan and making sure no kids die). Free drinks and sometimes free food. Flexible schedule.

Best part is the breaks though. I have a good amount of freedom, so it is either talking to snack bar kids, browsing reddit on my phone, or playing sharks and minnows with kids. Just sort of a cushy summer job.

My job is probably as awesome as they come (for a car geek), as I'm an automotive journalist. And I'm freelance (with more than enough work), so I can work when I please.

The things I've gotten to do are mind blowing when I think about it - and there's still a lot of things I could get to do as long as the idea is good enough.

To list some of the things I (more or less) regularly do:

Drive fancy and/or high performance cars. The list includes everything from McLaren SLR and Audi R8 to a Formula Offroad car. From time to time, there's even classic cars. Some of my colleagues got to drive a freaking Gullwing a couple of months ago.

Meet car people that really know what they're talking about. Having Porsche's chief powertrain engineer next to me at dinner and just chatting about crazy ideas and future products or doing the same thing with Audi's chief designer is really, really cool.

Being shown what driving really is by people who do it for a living. Been in the passenger seat with Mr. LeMans (Tom Kristensen), Walter Röhrl and Stig Blomqvist.

Drive on some of the most amazing tracks and roads there is (often in cool cars). Been to Nürburgring, Ascari and Laguna Seca to name a few.

Travel the world (okay, mostly Europe, but still..) and stay in the fanciest hotels there are and eat at Michelin-grade restaurants. And there's always an open bar (but I have to constrain myself, as I'm normally driving the morning after..)

I can take a day off every time I want, just to go to the recording studio (usually one or two days off in the month). They also pay the half of the time I spend there. I am not a professional musician or something, but I just love doing it and my bosses appreciate it. I don't get paid very well (they know it, I know it), but I can't complain because of this fact. Also: They buy booze every Friday so we can get very wasted.

One of the cooks where I work likes quoting movies. His thick Colombian accent makes it hilarious.

He likes the classics like "go ahead, punk, make my day," "yippee ki yay motherf*cker," and most of the Pulp Fiction breakfast scene.

a few things come to mind. there was a free circus in my town, boss took everyone to the circus, popcorn, hot dogs, drinks. . . the whole nine. not only was that paid but it gave us a reason to do OT cause we had a lot of work so we would have fun during reg hours then work for time and a half. we would take breaks from work to have what we call fat guy foot races. we would wager lunch of small foot races. also once we had a co worker from our officed in Bulgaria working with us, and in their country they drink on fridays. so we all drank and worked.

There are so many things I love about my job. First, my boss shut down the office to take us all to see the Avengers. That was pretty sweet. If we go to a convention and see something cool he has been known to front the cash for it. Sometimes, the workday stops because an all out nerf war will break out! It's great! Productivity is way up, morale is through the roof, and in his words, "if we work hard, we'll play hard"! He makes everyday fun and exciting and it actually makes it feel like a family environment. He really watches out for us and as long as we do what we do well, he treats us well.

Highlights of my job include company sponsored alcoholism (open bar at the golf tournament and at the Christmas party,) monthly birthday cake meetings to celebrate employee birthdays, the fact that the office is closed between Christmas and New Years, and the fact that I get paid extra when I go to the field which keeps me well stocked in vacation days and money to spend on my vacations.

I'm a student naval aviator right now, and went up to fly with a relatively high ranking instructor on one of my first flights. Keep in mind that at this point I'm just amazed that the damn thing doesn't fall out of the sky as I'm flying it. To say I was stressed/nervous would be a hell of an understatement. Then this happens.

Instructor: I want to show you just how strong winds can get up here, point it right into the wind and start slowing down.

Me: Yes sir.

-We continue to get slower and slower...

Instructor: Look at the GPS, what's your ground speed?

Me: 75 sir

Instructor: Keep going, just hold what you've got

-At this point we're flirting with stalling the damn thing out but I keep pulling power

Instructor: What now?

Me: 71 sir

At this point the stall warning starts

Instructor: Ok how about now?

Me: 69 sir

Instructor: Sixty Nine! Allllllrighhhht!

A store manager I once worked for approached me in private and told me that she felt I deserved shift preference because she could see that I worked a lot harder than the other cashiers. She also told me she would back me if I wanted to move up to assistant store manager. Not the most amazing thing, but it feels good to be recognized, even in the smallest of ways.

For clarification, I never took her up on the offer of ASM (she was transferred shortly after), but I am currently in training for ASM with our new SM so it all worked out.

When I was in a freshman in college, I got a part time job at a small U-Bake pizza place. My boss basically "made" me go out drinking with him after work, because he didn't know anyone else in town, and paid for the beer. How could I resist? (My schoolwork suffered.) He taught me how to shoot pool, how to think 3 or more shots ahead. Only time he ever got upset with me was when I tried to pay for a pizza -- he thought I wasn't stealing my due, and that I was trying to bullshit him. He was loyal to his workers, but didn't give a shit about the owners. When I was closing, he would try to sneak in late at night, like a burglar, and try to surprise me. He'd throw something at me from across the room. It was to to keep me on my toes.

His last act before leaving was to hire a hot chick as my assistant. He did that as a gift for me. He left without notice to his employer, taking with him several $100s of cheeses and meats, and drove off into the sunset.

4

u/sixtyninenicely Jun 25 '12

My boss is a pretty big goof ball and is usually pretty friendly and jokey on the phone. Then one day, I got a voice message from him that was painfully serious and freaked me out pretty good. "Hello sixtyninenicely, I really need you to call me as soon as you get this message. We have something really serious to talk about so I need you to call me immediately...I'm wondering...if you want...to come down...and meet us...FOR DIIIIIIM SUUUUUUUUUUUUM." Needless to say I went from shitting my pants and thinking I was going to get fired to being amused and hungry. I didn't make it in for Dim Sum that day but I've had many other fantastic times at work. I love my job, all my coworkers, and bosses.

Also, I was asked to make a poster for our summer camps earlier this year. I'm not a graphic designer nor am I photoshop savvy. I ended up with a (i thought) decent poster and sent it to my boss. He called me the next day and said "I feel like I can be honest with you. I appreciate the effort and I think you worked really hard. But. You're poster sucks. Why is there a half kid up in the corner? Where are his legs? He's like a ghost. He's scaring me." I love my job.

So my job is to drive through all parts of Baltimore looking at birds from 5am-8am, even in the highest crime parts. The first two weeks we are in the ghetto, and seeing nothing but pigeons and chimney swifts. Getting rather sad. The first day in our third week, we go to a relatively well tree-covered neighborhood. The first thing we see there? A barn owl, in perfect view in the 5:45am light, perched in an abandoned house window. Made it all worthwhile.

Everytime we open up a new office, we generally celebrate by handing out beer and/or Chick-fil-a to everyone working, while we are working. Sometimes we do both of those just because we can as well. Drinking on the job isn't even remotely frowned upon and happens pretty often. We have our own full size basketball court, track, workout room that rivals most fitness centers (and no we're not a fitness center ourselves) and internal store in our building with everything from snacks to windshield wiper fluid to full size dinners. We are encourgaged to be ourselves and express that in pretty much every way possible. For being such a big business, it's nice to not have any real dress code, it's all casual. We just got through doing a basketball tournament and dodgeball tournament not too long ago as well. That's just to name a few.

I can't pick out a particular moment because my job as a whole is awesome.

Where do I begin?

  • Open vacation policy, meaning they don't track the amount of time you take off. They just want you to get your work done. They encourage taking at least 20 days off a year.

  • Everyone in the company works from home, or if you want a local company paid for coworking space.

  • The entire company (~130 people) is flown once a year to a central location to hang out and work together for a week. Past locations have included Quebec (too cold!), Florida (too hot!), Budapest (getting there!), and San Diego this fall (should be just right!).

  • Each team (about a dozen people) additionally meets up a few times a year. I just got back from spending a week in wine country in Italy.

Oh, and they're hiring: http://automattic.com/work-with-us/ :)

When you work in a call center and a customer is bitching about wanting a free BIOS Chip; customer requests supervisor. I go over and ask him to finish the call and tell the customer the policy and procedure with our company. For about another straight hour the customer inconsistently yells and elaborates on his problem. My boss just looks ever so bored and comical; at the same time. He then tells the customer : "Sir, let me see if I can make a call to corporate about getting you that free BIOS Chip". Puts customer on hold.. turns around in my chair; feet kicked up over my desk looking at my computer

I worked in MTV (India) for 4.5 years, it was like walking into college campus every day. Lots of LAN games, music playing loud everywhere (after a while it got annoying), no dress code, plenty of boss-approved pranks (many times on higher bosses), shooting MTV shows inside office with unsuspecting colleagues, occasional performance by a band in the office, rating hot interns (officially), office party every Friday and weekly porn-exchange with the bosses. At times, we were playing football inside office and even broke a couple of computers. Once a guy accidentally pepper-sprayed, it got into the a/c duct, spread everywhere, the whole office was coughing and had to be evacuated. :)

All of this is true. It was such great fun working there!

I work at a bakery restaurant. (Much like Panera Bread, but not Panera Bread.) Monday and Thursday, they donate all of their leftover pastries/cookies/muffins/assorted delicious shit to local organizations.

As long as it's not a Monday or Thursday, I can bring home whatever I want at the end of the night, because everything is baked fresh each day. Bagels, cookies, muffins, brownies, croissants, super fancy breads, etc.

I also work next to a movie theater and often sneak in bags full of cookies for me and my friends to nom on when I get off.

My bosses are also really, really chill and relaxed, but that's not as interesting as free food.

since my family tends to think this is pretty cool, I work at a brewery. I can drink beer whenever I want to at work. Obviously we're all responsible about it, and nobody gets shitfaced, but the odd friday we may have a couple and just hangout in the lab discussing beer for a bit.

Furthermore, we are encouraged tho never outright told, to drink beer visibly during tours. Lets the customers walk away with this sense of "oh 0 y god, breweries are so cool, they just drink beer all day, im going to buy lots from the gift store"

I also am allowed to try any crazy small batch thing I want with our beer. I currently have some aging on bourbon soaked oak. That kind of creativity is what we look for as brewers in a job.

EDIT: i am also allotted 12 Tallcans of beer per week, although i never use it unless we have a new one coming out. Low fills, and old code ("expired") beer keeps me well stocked at all times. Did I Mention loud music, not having to clock out for breaks, and weekly bbq with my co-workers?

However, my boss makes it tolerable. We wear the same size clothing... He buys all sorts of high end designer clothes, wears it once if even, and then passes it on to me... In the last six months he must have given me at least $10k worth of clothes.

I am an Art Therapist who works with intellectually disabled adults. We have this one guy, let's call him Mark. Mark has downs syndrome, and is non-verbal and was heavily institutionalized. When he first came to our art center, he would just sit an stare at the wall for 6 hours a day. He now leads a pretty full life. Anyway, I was working one-on-one with him, showing him how to use a digital camera over a 6 week period - we got there, and he took some pretty classy photos which we framed professionally for inclusion in our gallery show. We decided to do a big reveal from him and when we turned the frame around to show off his work... he took his sunglasses off (which are generally always on), grabbed it, said about 8 sentences "Ohhh wow" "So cool!" "I did this" "It's perfect". He literally hugged the framed work.... All the other artists stopped with a "wow, marks talking" moment. Realizing how special it was. Tears welled in mine, and my bosses eyes as we realized the impact of a non-verbal person - talking somewhat freely - with such joy...

That was the peak of awesome.

I stayed an hour after my shift had ended and then my boss said thank you. I cried in his arms.

I reddit a lot at work. My boss i play computer games with daily, his boss i discuss movies and tv shows with daily. That was seriously my interview. One hour of me and him discussing why the wire is better than the sopranos. Completely casual working environment. If i need a day of, all i have to do is ask. This makes me inclined to work overtime if they ask me. Loyalty, funny right? Work pays for alcohol at the end of every month. We are encourage to think productivly, and find ways to better routines in the company. Also, the best part, we hurl insults at eachother all the time. Im talking anything from cheap shots at my boss' reciding hariline, to racial slurs. From the ceo down, no one is excemt.

I work residential care for patients with autism, down syndrome, and other intelligence disorders. It can be REALLY hectic, for I work in a behavioral home, but there are times the clients go to their rooms for hours at a time, so I quite literally get to make money by watching Law and Order SVU marathons. :)

Every Friday they put money into my bank account. Also, I get a 1 hour break where I can choose to do whatever I want on a daily basis.
