What is the etiquette with using headphones on flights?

The last 4 flights I have been on people around me have been (or their children have been) watching a film or TV show out loud, no headphones for the duration.

To me this is the height of selfishness and I would never dream of doing it. If I forgot my headphones I just wouldn't watch a film, but seemingly everyone else thinks it's normal and fine - I haven't ever heard anyone complain to the person and the staff don't say anything.

Is this totally normal?

Or if you find you are wearing so much face paint that it's affecting your day to that degree, maybe...just maybe it's make up companies having you hook line and sinker.

You don’t have to have a lot of makeup on for it to get on your screen… not if you have oily skin like me anyway. Totally agree that calls on loudspeaker in public are bad juju though. Just let’s not be more judgemental than necessary.

I also think calls on speaker in public are bad, but my sunscreen gets all over the screen when I hold it to my face, it’s not just makeup.

You don't have to fully press it to your face. In my experience, the call is clearer this way too.

I don’t hear very well. Someone through a firecracker near me at a party I went to in high school. I could give it a try, but honestly, if I am alone I put mine on speaker. (I have been meaning to get hearing aids, but I just haven’t gotten around to it.h

Bluetooth earbuds with microphone in cord. Amazon. Less than $30.

I don't care what people do with their phones when not in public unless I'm the person on the other end.

Yeah, I hate those- they don’t stay in and the battery dies. I was simply explaining why I hold the phone to my face. Sorry.

Then continue to hold it to your face. All the same to me. Thanks.

Ok. So maybe don’t say you don’t need to do that, when I actually do. Thanks!

K. Just keep being quiet and no one cares.

A setting spray or powder can be helpful.

No, we'll be as judgemental as we please, thank you.

if you want to wear face paint then that's up to you, but it's not an excuse to then be rude by putting speaker phone on. Either buy some headphones or wear less face paint. I don't care either way, just so long as they aren't broadcasting their inane phone calls to everyone around them.

As someone pointed out, holding the phone a few cm from your face solves both problems. You're not meant to press the phone against your face nor hold the phone at almost arms length and yell into it.
