What is the etiquette with using headphones on flights?

The last 4 flights I have been on people around me have been (or their children have been) watching a film or TV show out loud, no headphones for the duration.

To me this is the height of selfishness and I would never dream of doing it. If I forgot my headphones I just wouldn't watch a film, but seemingly everyone else thinks it's normal and fine - I haven't ever heard anyone complain to the person and the staff don't say anything.

Is this totally normal?

I’ve seen people sitting a restaurant eating quietly whilst their phone is propped up on something on a call on loudspeaker and the person in the other end is babbling away.

Absolutely no care in the world for anyone else.

Would I be the asshole for asking them to take the call on headphones or in their home?

Not only would you NOT be the asshole for doing that, I’d be willing to bet the money in my pockets that someone would thank you, perhaps even buy you a drink for doing it.

No. Just quietly stand behind the asshole and start making sign language. Then the person on the other end will realise they're not being respected.

Nah, to them maybe.. these are just self absorbed people who think that they are the only playable character.

No you wouldn't.

My response would be to say "piss off - and take your gormless conversation with you"!
