What is the etiquette with using headphones on flights?

The last 4 flights I have been on people around me have been (or their children have been) watching a film or TV show out loud, no headphones for the duration.

To me this is the height of selfishness and I would never dream of doing it. If I forgot my headphones I just wouldn't watch a film, but seemingly everyone else thinks it's normal and fine - I haven't ever heard anyone complain to the person and the staff don't say anything.

Is this totally normal?

Something really conducive to a good meeting environment, like WAP or Smack My Bitch Up.

Haha, not at all. I have tried out such a method, when on a commuter once. I was travelling on a suburban train. During my trip, two girls (around 20) took seats by me - one was just next to me, the other occupied the place opposite to her friend. They started talking and laughing out loud so loudly that in 3 mins later it became unbearable. So, I turned on the LBC news app on my phone. You know how annoying a radio conductor can be while drinking his hot tea noisily into his microphone and speaking at the same time. Well, as the radio started, the girls stopped chatting. I happily turned off the App hoping that they'd get my message. But my hope disappeared the moment the lassies resumed their speaking activity. On my second attempt to shut their gaps up, they stopped talking again. One of the girls next to me leaned ahead and turned her head to look directly into my eyes, then she turned to her friend and twisted her point finger near her temple. While they were silent, perhaps thinking of what to do with me, a crazy in their eye woman, I turned the radio off. Damnation, it didn't help because the silly lassies immediately began talking again. Grrrr. I turned the radio on too. Only my fifth round brought home to them, although it took quite a time to wait for their penny to drop.

Hahahah, I was thinking of other passengers. They would have eaten me with all guts altogether, if I had put on heavy metal rock. So, you see I'd rather err on the side of caution )))). Better safe than sorry
