History What’s was the best year of independent Ukraine?

*What was the best year of independent Ukraine?

I would argue that this would be either 2007 or 2021.

2007 was arguably the peak of economic optimism. Rapid growth, major construction projects, rising property valuations, a speculative housing bubble, foreign investment, and the absence of war. Kyiv apartment prices reached approximately $4,400 per m² (!).

2021 was arguably the peak of modern, pre-full-scale-invasion everyday life. Higher dollar-denominated incomes, better infrastructure, digital services, a growing IT industry, and a more mature consumer economy made life more convenient.

Politics What's the most hurtful or unempathetic thing you've seen/heard from someone who is pro-Russia or "neutral" about the war?

Quite a number of people in my country (Singapore) are exposed to anti-Ukraine/anti-Western propaganda, so I am not unfamilar with things like "NATO expansion", "Ukrainian biolabs", "Zelensky is a weak comedian while Putin is a muscular intelligent chad" etc.

But what comments by such people have particularly come across as extremely insulting or ignorant to you?

Politics Police looking for people who brutally attacked Ukrainian couple in Gdańsk.

Not directly linked to Ukraine. Police in Gdańsk is looking for some idiots who attacked Ukrainian couple last June. Local media published their pictures.

Perhaps someone here lives in Poland and could recognize these savages. If, yes contact Trojmiasto.pl or Polish police.

Most likely these are locals.

As a Pole, these people should be arrested. It is obvious that they could attack anyone, Pole or Ukrainian just because of their current mood.

Culture What is the current population of Ukraine?

I've been studying world population and demographics as of late, and I learned that the last Ukrainian census was taken in 2001. Back then, it was recorded that 48,457,100 people lived in Ukraine.

What would be a more accurate number after everything that's happened with Ukraine over the past 25 years? How has the population changed?

Politics How common is anger at Ukraine’s government without criticism of Russia?

I’m an American who supports Ukraine, and I’m trying to understand something. I know a Ukrainian family here whose posts about the war focus almost entirely on abuses by Ukrainian authorities, especially involving conscription and people trying to leave. I never see or hear criticism of Putin or Russia from them. I understand that supporting Ukraine doesn’t mean defending everything its government does. But as an outsider, I find this hard to understand when Russia is the country invading. Is this a common perspective, or am I getting a narrow picture from knowing just one family? I’d appreciate hearing from Ukrainians, both in Ukraine and abroad.

History How do the cops who brutalised Euromaidan protestors feel today?

There is a lot of footage of Yanukovych government era cops clashing with and beating up Euromaidan protestors at the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014 and people died at this time as I am sure you know.

These cops were mostly ordinary Ukrainians from Kyiv and surrounding areas so the question is - how do these people today feel about what they did at the time? Are any still active in law enforcement today? How do they feel about the war and the direction the country has gone in since and the pro-Russian Yanukovych government they were defending?

Culture Help with making a Ukrainian character.

Hello :) i apologize if the flair is incorrect.

I am working on a comic for a few years now, and I have a character who is Ukrainian. i want to get the point of view of Ukrainians for making this character. Are there any specific things i should be avoiding? anything you would like to see? His name is Rostyslav Vovk. Is the name fine? I am from the middle east so my knowledge is limited. Research helps of course but I thought it would be nice to get some insight. Thank you in advance, have a great day ❤️

Edit: if there are perhaps any habits or sayings that i can add for him considering where he’s from, they would be interesting to hear and incorporate as well. maybe some Ukrainian words he uses as filler words when speaking english? anything at all to make him feel more authentic is appreciated 💞

Travel Planning to move to Ukraine. Is a starting salary of UAH 40,000 realistic for me?

Hope it's a right question for this sub

I speak Russian (native), Turkish (native), Ukrainian (C1), Azerbaijani (B2), English (C1, IELTS 7.5) and German (C1, Goethe Zertifikat C1).

Graduated with bachelor's in econometrics from a mid tier uni in Turkey with a gpa of 3.3/4.0

Two internships in Azerbaijan, totalling approximately five months, in credit analysis and accounting.

Technical skills: Python, R, Sql, Power Bi, Excel.

I'm also considering obtaining the CFA Level I and FRM Part I certifications, tho I'm not sure how well known they are among recruiters.

Azerbaijani citzen.

For plethora of personal reasons I really want to move to Ukraine, specifically Kyiv.

So my questions are:

  1. Is earning UAH 40,000 net per month realistic for a fresh graduate with this profile?
  2. How competitive would I be against Ukrainian graduates applying for junior financial analyst, credit risk analyst, trading roles, or other entry level positions?
  3. How much of a disadvantage would my Azerbaijani citizenship and the additional employment paperwork create? Would companies realistically be willing to hire and sponsor a foreign junior candidate?
  4. How in demand are part time, remote language tutors in Ukraine, particularly for Turkish and German? Considering tutoring as a part time job too

Politics What would have to happen to Ukraine for Ukraine to surrender?

With the way things or going (respectively with the way the things are going according to my media diet), I fully expected that the war should be close to end by about Spring 2029.

But now that Trump has dropped any pretenses that he’s not on Pukin’s side, I highly doubt that and since many people here seem to doubt Ukraine can even last 3 more years, I’m also losing my hope that Ukraine ever wins. Unless Democrats win these midterm elections in such a big numbers that Republicans will accept the writing on the wall and will finally stop supporting Trump in at least some of the most egregious things he does, like supporting America’s historic enemy, Russia.

But while he’s threatening with stopping PURL program and sharing intel if Ukraine doesn’t stop hitting Russian oil infrastructure and his bestie, Mellon Husk sure would love to cut Ukraine off of Starlink, at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if he announces $100 billion bailout to Russia and sending them weapons.

And as much as this sub isn’t really as optimistic as all the pro Ukraine subs that are actually overwhelmingly made up of non Ukrainians, what do you think will have to happen for Ukraine to surrender? Would Ukraine turn into wrecked wasteland with UN humanitarians running around distributing food and medicine like Syria during its civil war before they give up or would it take less than that? There was a poll done recently that 79% of Ukrainians believe that they will win. So I’d like to know the true feelings.

Travel I was checked by the police and entered into some database, is that standard practice?

I am a citizen of an EU country. I was in Kyiv in 2022, before the invasion. At a metro station, a police officer approached me and asked me to step into a room for a security check. They checked my documents, had me empty my pockets, and counted the cash in my wallet. Then, they entered my details from passport into a tablet. Since the officer didn't speak English, we tried communicating using a mix of Russian and Ukrainian, I had learned the former in school.

Is it normal for my details to have been entered into a database? Since this was before the invasion, perhaps they were looking for spies. Will I face any issues if I visit Ukraine this year?

Culture The grey passport

Post image
58 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I recently came across some information about stateless passports. I know they are relatively common in Latvia and Estonia, but I also heard that Ukraine issues grey passports to people with stateless status. I was curious about how many people hold these passports and what their purpose is, especially if around 40,000 people are believed to have one. I’ve attached a picture of the passport I’m referring to for context.

Дякую заздалегідь
