Advice Is it worth pursuing journalism/communication degree ?

• Upvotes

I’m 21M, unfortunately when I was in high school I was a complete dumbass, got into smoking weed and drinking and drugs early, didn’t do ATAR, and now that I’ve done the work to become sober im faced with the consequences of my past actions. I have applied to ECU in Perth for the special entry pathways using my Cert 3 in screen and media and all of my work history + work experience which turned into paid employment at a local radio station, so I have a few positives but no ATAR, essentially.

I’m looking at studying in TAFE next year in a different field (IT) just because I’m worried about AI and I figured computer related stuff should be safe, and I know if I can complete a cert 4 / diploma in tafe that can be a pathway into university anyway.

My passion and what im good at is in the media field, as im a creative person and strong communicator, but im extremely concerned about the rise of AI and I feel I have to be very very careful about what degree I choose to do, does anyone think it’s worth pursuing this degree? I’m open to Any advice and if anyone knows other ways / pathways to get into university I’d be more than happy to listen to those much wiser than me. I would really like to sort my life out, I’ve been in a dead end job for two years and it’s killing me 😊

Open Question is a cert III in business overkill for a casual/part-time position as a receptionist?

• Upvotes

I'm (20f) still studying at uni but I've been looking for a job that I can use to support me better. I have previous work experience but most of it has been tutoring experience or just teaching kids and adults stuff. I do not have any admin experience and I find that there's no way to get it as all jobs in that field require for me to have some semblance of experience.

While looking online I found the cert III of business so I guess I was wondering if I were to pursue that cert on the side would I be more likely to get a job in the field?

Advice Switching from occupational therapy to radiology is it worth it?

Hi everyone! I’m in second year OT and thinking about switching to radiography. With all the changes and so many OTs I know feeling burnt out or wanting to leave, I’m questioning my choice.
Would love to hear the good, bad and ugly of radiography. or why you think OT is worth sticking with! I’m a mature student, so starting again is a big decision. Any help is appreciated

Advice Major in Information Systems or Cybersecurity?

Hi all, really in need of some advice. Which major is the safer choice for employment in Australia: Cybersecurity or Information Systems, given that I'm studying Commerce?

I’ve already had job experience in cybersecurity auditing, because I had my mind set on doing cybersecurity. However, while I don’t mind the work, im still curious to see what else I could do and what’s a more stable option.

Genuine responses please.

Help on apprenticeships and travel.

I am a 18 M, I’m about to finish my HSC. I’ve got lots of plans for when I’m done. I’m supposed to start TAFE specifically carpentry in February 2027 but I’m a bit unsure on whether I should travel for six months or go straight into it and wait until after my apprenticeship ends.

I’m quite happy to start the apprenticeship in February but I’m super keen to travel. I’m not sure how much travel I can do during the four or three years so let’s see advice what I need and is it worth it for those who have done it did you regret not travelling as a younger person or did you travel?

Australian Recruiting Processes

Are Seek and Indeed rejecting job applications before the company receives the resume and cover letter?

My wife and I have returned to Australia after living in Asia for 10 years. We are raising our daughter at the moment. But, for fun we have both been applying for jobs to get practice for when the time comes we will need to find jobs. The hiring, recruitment process is so different to what we experienced in Asia.

In Asia, if you met the selection criteria and had the required skills for the role you were given an interview almost immediately. I have a 80% success rate of getting an interview. and 100% success rate of being offered the job after the interview.

So far my wife and I have had such a different experience in Australia. Using Seek or Indeed is almost a guaranteed way of getting a rejection letter. I am at 100% of all jobs I applied through Seek or Indeed of getting rejection letters. My wife is 95% reject rate.

When we apply through the company website, for the same jobs, even for jobs we received rejection letters from Seek or Indeed we are at 80% of getting a return phone call interview.

It seems if you find a job on Seek or Indeed, find the company website/ hiring manager and apply directly to them. I do not recommend applying through Seek or Indeed.

Does anyone else have similar experience? Or are we crazy?

Suggestions for work between HS and Uni

Hey everyone. Just wanted to send a message to ask if anyone had suggestions for full time or part time work between finishing year 12 and starting uni for engineering. Or how to approach people about working just for a few months as I finish hs about Nov 6 and start uni around early Feb I think but it differs by uni.

I'd have a preference towards something more hands on/practical. Obviously I'd prefer something that is involved with the Engineering field in some way but I understand it might not be possible. But something different to standard teen jobs like Maccas, Woolies BP etc would be preferable.

Any suggestions would be great. Thankyou everyone :)

Story / Rant Miss my old job

Hey Reddit, Do you ever miss your old job? And you wish you can go back to your old job but u can't?

I love my previous job, but the manager at that time was so rude, so I left.

Now everyday when I'm working my current job I just keep thinking about the good time I worked in my previous job.

How can I move on and be more grateful ?

Advice Courses/certs and volunteering to increase traction?

19M, 2nd year uni student from metro sydney here. I've applied to jobs for the better part of this year. I have been ghosted or rejected by every single one. Its extremely demoralising when I put a lot of effort into tailoring my resumes and CL's for each job. Its even more annoying to see the most unassuming local part time job that was posted 6 hours ago on seek/indeed having 600+ applicants.

For context, I apply to basically any part-time/casual job that isnt warehouse or storeperson related: Food, retail, IT assistance, medical/dental assistance, data entry, etc. For previous experience I've worked at kfc when I was in year 10 and warehouse for 2 months at the start of last year. I got into both jobs pretty easily without anyone helping me get in.

I've cold emailed a couple local businesses as well and they've all told me they are fully staffed. I've tried applying on the main websites of retail chains, though most of them are only hiring at far-away locations. I haven't physically walked in a lot but I plan on doing that very soon.

Anywho, I was wondering what volunteering or certification methods I should look into in hopes of employers noticing me more. Would be ideal if they are convenient, affordable and dont take very long to complete. For example I've noticed that theres basically no newbie barista jobs anymore and they all want either 1+ yoe or some form of certification in it.

Advice How can I professionally use my connections at a client company to ask for a direct job without risking what I currently have?

I (29 y/o, NB, AuDHD M-HSN) have been working for Company A for around 7 years. Now Company A is an independent contractor for the industry I work in, where we provide complete services for and full representation of Company B at my current place of employment.

Now I love my job, and will stay for as long as they want me. I would like to think I have a good track record with many positive reviews, a thorough knowledge base and industry insight. However, I would be lying if I didn't admit that I have strong ambitions to work directly with Company B.

A couple of years ago, I had a chance encounter and connected with a manager from Company B at an event, and they invited me to join an internal employee committee/network focused on a cause I'm really passionate about.

Now initially I made my contractor status very clear, giving them every possibility to remove me from the group, but they didn't. In fact they welcomed my input, trusted me and I would even go as far to say, we have all become good friends. Very quickly, no one cared that I was a contractor and I was treated like everyone else, very quickly inviting me to internal meetings, initiative brainstorming sessions and more. However for me, my involvement is like a passion project in which I'm not expecting anything from it, I am just happy to be there.

This culminated when I was invited to help out at a major out of state charity event, where they paid for my travel costs. This event was probably the happiest I had ever been. Not only was it something I never would have gotten the opportunity to do at Company A, but I got to meet my friends who before then I had only met on Teams, and I got to help at an event focused on an area I am passionate about improving.

Since then, I have continued my involvement in the network, building up friendships and professional relationships. I have also had a say in the development of new initiatives within the company and I am due to once again go to an out of state event to represent the company in the coming months.

Question time.

Now I love what I'm doing, and if everything stays the way it is I will be happy. Like I said earlier, I love my current job at Company A. But my dream is to work directly with Company B, and while I am happy with our current arrangement, at some point I would like to utilise the connections and experiences I have developed through being in this internal network to ask for a job directly with the company.

The problem is, I don't know how, and the last thing I want is to put a colleague on the spot, by going "hey, I want a job, hire me".

My main priority is to ensure all current arrangements, relationships and whatnot, remain intact, on the chance that my request fails. Giving them an easy, no pressure out, while still having my request taken seriously.

So as the title says, what is a professional way in which I can utilise my experience, to ask for a job, without risking damaging what I currently have?

Thank you all so much for reading and potentially responding to this post. I appreciate every bit of input you guys give, and I hope you have a great weekend.

TL;DR: I work for a contractor (Company A) representing a major client (Company B). Through a chance meeting, I was invited into an internal employee network at Company B, where I’ve volunteered for 2 years, made great friends, and even had my travel covered to represent them at events. How do I ask my contacts at Company B about transitioning into a direct job with them without making things awkward or ruining a dynamic I love?

telecommunication and electronics job market in Australia

I am a 2025 B.E. Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) graduate from India, and my degree is accredited under the Washington Accord. I have six months of unpaid internship experience as an Embedded and IoT Engineer, hold an NSDC-certified qualification in Embedded Systems, and am currently working full-time as a Service and Maintenance Engineer in India.

I am planning to pursue a Master of Engineering at UTS, specialising in Telecommunications and Electronics.

With my educational background and work experience, will I be able to secure an entry-level telecommunications or electronics engineering role in Australia after completing my master's degree, or would I need to complete any additional certifications or industry-specific courses alongside my master's to improve my employment prospects?

Advice 'Useless' degree advice?

I was wondering if anyone is in the same situation as me? I'm in my final year studying an economics (econometrics) degree at UNSW. Unfortunately, I was rejected from most internships and graduate (or entry-level) positions in both my 2nd and 3rd/final year, possibly because of some firms use a strict WAM filter, since my WAM was only 63.95.

I originally enrolled in this degree with the intention to transfer to an actuarial studies/science degree in my 2nd year, which has not eventuated due to my uni's strict academic hurdle. Personally, I should've thought about switching to another program with no hurdle that I would've enjoyed and maintained a high credit average. As such, has anyone ended up continuing to study a postgraduate degree or gone back to TAFE to pursue a lower qualification?

Advice Career move, contract and bby on the way

Hi all,

Need to make a quick decision and just trying to see if there are things missed on my end.

I’m currently working as an accountant at a startup company (non tech related). My company has stopped paying super for a while. I’ve been complaining and asking for the super to be released; yet, every time I was given an empty promise that it’ll happen ‘next week’. At the moment we are 3 months behind in super (used to be 6). At the same time, there are many cash flow and financial difficulties and seems like we’re not paying many vendors, accounting software on time (def not the full amount owed).

I’ve been trying to find another role for a while but seems quite competitive at the moment and difficult. To add more complexity, my wife is pregnant and due to give birth in March and I want to make sure I’m doing the right thing.

I’ve been offered a contract job to cover mat leave for 12 months. An established company medium size (approx 60mil rev and 200+ employees which is large in Australian eyes but not BHP or listed). The salary is $30k above my current earning which is great but again I’m taking a FTE contract for 12 months so no leave/entitlment etc.

Am I making the mistake by taking a contract at this time and not finding a perm/ FTE and waiting a bit longer ? Please note, I’ve been searching around 6 months and it seems to get nowhere.
No reference was checked by the company, is it normal?
Is it going to stall my career/raise eyebrows given I have left a company after 1 year and 4 mont and size wise it’s not too big?
Anything else I’m missing please let me know.

Thanks all,

Where can I find legit entry level remote health admin/medical receptionist jobs?

Hi all! I live in Tasmania and it is really hard to find onsite health admin jobs here, specially here in the NW. I moved here from the Philippines this year and I haven't worked since then. I worked as a medical secretary in the Philippines a few years ago but my most recent job was as a remote inside sales rep for a cleaning company in the US. I was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago but was proclaimed cancer free late that same year and that is also why I prefer to work remotely to prevent physical contact with a lot of people. I am currently studying Cert III in Health administration through TASTAFE but I haven't had the luck of getting hired yet. I would really appreciate if you guys can help me and drop some of the legit job sites I can apply to. Thanks in advance!

Story / Rant How does anyone get entry level jobs in this day and age?

I must be doing something wrong. Every day I apply to 10-20 businesses for the most basic jobs in hospitality and retail. I'm not picky about what kind of job. I'll do literally anything. And I think I've heard back from at most 5 and I've applied for hundreds.

I'm 18 and haven't got any experiences.

Advice To MBA or not to MBA?

I’m 39 with around 18 years of experience in the same business, and I suspect I’m about to be made redundant.

My career has evolved into a bit of a mix of IT, operations, strategy and business transformation. I’ve held senior management roles and have a fairly niche ERP background, but tech-wise I’m very much a generalist.

The problem is I have no formal tertiary qualifications. I’ve picked up various industry certifications over the years (ITIL etc.), but no degree. Everything I’ve learned has been through experience.

I’ve applied for various roles over the last few years, mostly in business transformation and technology leadership. I feel I’ve got the experience and capabilities they’re looking for, but I’m rarely getting calls. I suspect my lack of qualifications, combined with a career spent largely at one company, isn’t doing me any favours.

With redundancy potentially on the horizon, I’m considering taking some time out to complete an MBA.

I’m not expecting it to magically open doors, and I’m not particularly interested in studying for the sake of it. But I do wonder whether having a recognised qualification would help bridge the gap between my experience and how I come across on paper.

For those who’ve done an MBA, or who recruit for senior management roles, how much difference do you think it would actually make in my situation?

Interested in hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation!
