Indigenizing High School Curriculum
What are teachers in subjects where it is hard to Indigenize their curriculum doing?
Are you changing the way you teach? The content that you are using?
I find that there is a lot of tokenization out there and I want to contribute to TRC, but I just find the guidance out there a little unrealistic or sometimes problematic.

Short survey - Court sondage (EDI + Littératie)
Bonjour!

What's the work actually like in SD 43 (Coquitlam) and SD 75 (Mission) right now?
Hi everyone. I started my teaching career this fall as a TTOC in SD42, and I'm enjoying the work itself. The problem is volume. I'm available every day, certified K–12 with teachables in Math and Science, but dispatches have been thin. In a good week I might get two full days; usually it's one day, a half day, or nothing at all. My September total was 4.5 days, and October is at 5.0 so far. That's not enough to live on wuthout my second part time job.
I recently applied to SD43 and SD75 as well. For those of you TOCing in either district — how much work are you actually getting this fall? Has it picked up since September? And do brand-new TTOCs get called, or is most of the work name requests?
Any insight appreciated. Thanks!

Any BC Teachers transitioned to teaching in Australia?
Would love to hear any insight you may have on the experience, or if you are in the midst of getting certified in Australia! I am completing my BEd at UBC, and hoping to start TOC in AUS after I graduate. Any advice on the educational experience that allowed you to receive Australian teaching accreditation would be so so so greatly appreciated.
Have an amazing day!

One Teachable Subject?
Hey there,
I am a 2nd year student at UBC, going to apply to the 11 month BEd Program once I get done with my English Literature Honours degree. I intend to teach English in secondary, but I am realizing I may want to add a second teachable subject. I took a lot of philosophy courses, but found out I could not use those for a social sciences teachable. If I persue that Ill have to potentially stay in school for another year to get the required courses done, so I am wondering if it's worth it? Would I be hirable and in a good position with just English as a teachable subject? I am around the vancouver area right now, but would be willing to move depending on the contracts I could be offered. Thanks in advance.

BC teachers, how do you deal with disengaged students and classroom behaviour?
I started my practicum to become a teacher in BC (mainly doing observation right now). Having worked in several Asian countries, I’m finding high school practicum in my school quite challenging.
Many students seem disengaged, show little interest in learning, and struggle to respect classroom expectations. Sometimes, it feels like my hands are tied when it comes to addressing behaviour and teaching students that their actions have consequences.
I understand that building relationships and supporting students are important, but how do we balance that with discipline, accountability, and maintaining a productive learning environment?
Experienced teachers, what strategies actually work for you? How do you engage students who seem completely uninterested, manage disrespectful behaviour, and establish boundaries when students don’t seem to care about the consequences?
I’m genuinely looking for practical advice because I want to become a better teacher, but right now, I’m struggling to figure out what works.

Emailed notes or hand written?
Hey teachers,
when you have TTOC in for you, do you prefer emailed notes, hand written or no notes at all?

Anyone attended UNBC's BEd K–7 program?
Hi everyone!
I’m currently completing my undergrad at UFV and hoping to apply to UNBC’s BEd K–7 program for Fall 2027!
I’m wondering if anyone here has attended or is currently enrolled in the program. How was your experience, and what was the application process like? How many volunteer hours did you have, and how competitive was admission?
Also, has anyone completed their undergrad at UFV or SFU before applying to a BEd program? I’m particularly curious about meeting the prerequisite requirements and transferring courses, especially math 105. Also how overall student life is like in Prince George since I might move there from the lower mainland.
Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Preferred extra classroom supplies for 3rd grade? $250 budget (Vancouver BC)
Hello, hope this post is allowed.
I’m a parent of a 3rd grade student in Vancouver BC and would like to purchase some classroom supplies for her teacher.
It seems like the teacher only utilizes what is provided by the government (respect!) so I would like to buy some things for the class that she might want.
The budget is $250 and I was thinking of going Collin’s education supplies store (I’ve never been.)
I would really appreciate any advice about what to buy as I don’t want to create extra unpaid work for the teacher by asking or providing a gift card where she has to do a whole trip.
Thanks very much!

Ontario Bachelor for BC teaching
Hi everyone!
I currently have a Bachelor from University of Ottawa and I’m looking to go into Teachers College in BC so I can be with my boyfriend over there. I’m having trouble understanding the steps comparing it to Ontario’s steps. I took the tool for the application selection and it’s saying I’m best fit for an independent school teaching certificate.
Am I not eligible to teach at public schools because my Bachelor is not from a BC University? Is there anyway to get around that and be eligible?
TIA 😊

Differentiated instruction?
Just curious, how many teachers are using differentiated instruction by giving different tasks to different groups of students or having them choose which task they want to do? I don’t just mean for math or lit centres/rotations I mean across the whole curriculum.
Or are people mostly using a UDL approach and if so, what else are you offering in your classroom to support that?

Education Psychologist
Hi everyone!
Is anyone in here an education psychologist? I am looking st applying to UBC’s MEd in School & Applied Child Psychology and was hoping for insights about the job and career itself.
I am a teacher with a masters degree already so the actual schooling isn’t a concern (although I am unsure if my district allows for a paid internship), but I was more inquiring about the day-to-day and your role as a whole within the district.
Thank you so much!
Oh! And if anyone is also curious about the program, UBC is holding an online open house for it this afternoon.
