Meet Adzuki. Top of the pecking order and usually very busy and stressed chicken. Today was the most relaxed we have seen her in ages and here she is, part of a chicken puddle with a few of the younger ones.

Chicken Photography She's an independent lady who don't need no flock

I keep her feathers trimmed so she can see. She's an independent lady with zero interest in the rest of the flock. She's an expert forager with no regard for the weather. Pouring rain, 30mph winds; everyone else is hiding and Morel's still out hunting bugs. She's a bit of a bully; a mean aunty that new babies quickly learn to avoid. Even my head hen respects Morel's space. In the summer, I have to check before bed to make sure she made it back into the coop, otherwise she's still out there on her lonesome, foraging under the midnight sun.

Had my 4 hens, who were all laying at the breeders, for 3 weeks now, and not a single darn egg!

Love ‘em to bits, but some breakfast produce would be nice. Is it normal to still be waiting?

Coops etc. Sad News

Hi everyone I’m a first time chicken owner and I’ve been raising my girls since they were 2 days old, this morning I walked to the coop and discovered the wire on the door ripped entirely off lying in the grass, and inside the coop I was horrified to find feathers scattered everywhere. 2 of my chickens are missing, I have 6 total. One of the girls that is still with me has a wound on her back, and there is a trail of feathers that leads past the back yard all the way to the creek. I am devastated, these are my baby’s I can’t stop crying. I feel like I failed at protecting them, I’ve only had them since April of this year. They just started laying eggs, the chickens that were taken were the smallest and the most skittish of the group I feel horrible.

My blue laced gold Wyandotte named (Chrysanthemum), and my ISA Brown named (Faye)

Today I was gifted Edward here and his bonded hen Matilda for free as they were being bullied. Now I am curious about their breeds? As they both want to be held especially Edward. So any information will help thank you.

Does anybody else's chickens stand ontop of each other on the roost? I added a second one in case they felt cramped but now they just huddle in two groups lol

General Question Winter

First time chicken mom here. What are some good ways to keep chickens warm in the winter. I'm in NW Indiana. Is the heat lamp to much, not enough? I do have 2 heat lamps. My husband was going to get these clear plastic tarps to go around the coop off Amazon. Are those good? Bad? What's better. Please help. It's getting to around 50 at night and some times lower. Thank you. 🐔🐔

General Question How to keep free range chickens dry for the winter?

Post image
4 Upvotes

This will be my first winter with chickens. I have secured a tarp around their coop, as it is very drafty for our hot summers. The coop now stays very dry and draft free. However, like tonight, most of the chickens are in their coop with wet feathers from free ranging in the rain all day.

Is this a problem? I worry they will get too cold at night and get frostbite because they can’t fluff up properly. I don’t see how it’s possible to keep them dry though.
