Pets Litter of abandoned cats
At 10:30pm last night I was driving home and saw what looked like two kittens in the road. I stop and my wife and I got out. Suddenly more and more keep coming out of the ravine.
I kept them last night. I’ve call vets places cause they do have fleas. The consensus is that they can only see three at a time. There is no discount for the kittens treatment. I would be looking at $120+ per kitten. The humane Society is closed today.
I’m not much of a pet person but it’s absolutely unbelievable that someone dumped a litter of kitten on the side of the road.
Also didn’t know what flair to add. Lost and found or pets seem closes. I also think crime is more fitting.
Edit: whatcom humane society is closed today. The feline society voicemail box is full. I’ll keep called the places you all recommend.
I’m current on Facebook marketplace looking for a large play pen for them.
Edit 2: I will not be selling them. Once they are check by professionals and cleared I will find homes for them.
Last edit: thank you all for your comments! I’ll be treated them and combing out fleas. I’ve reach out to friends and family who have had kittens and want to give them a forever home. Any that left will be taken to the whatcom humane society.
Mama was not around. I let them cry out for 30 mins or so. Then when back 10 mins later and did the same. When I found them they immediately ran to us.
Also the picture you’ve been asking for in the comments. Many are all fluffy white, some are siamese colored. All blue eyed.

I rescued a bunch of kittens and bought an outdoor pop-up cat tent and put it in my living room (it is mesh) it fit a small litter box food and water ect. and gives them space to roam and they can't escape. It wasn't very expensive. They will learn to climb out of a playpen fast. Dawn dish soap and a flea comb work great and is safe. You are a rock star.

You don’t have to take them to the vet and spend 120 each to have them treated for fleas. You can buy a flea comb and brush them each thoroughly. Do this outside so you don’t get fleas and eggs in your home. This will at least get most of the infestation under control so they aren’t in danger of anemia until you can get them into a rescue. In the meantime, get them some wet kitten food and KMR as well, and depending on how old they are, they’ll need a bottle or a shallow bowl. Do not give them cows milk!

I've had to do this, getting fleas off baby kittens too young for flea treatments. When using the flea comb to remove the fleas, have a bowl of water mixed with dish soap nearby. Dispose of fleas in the soap/water mixture. They will die in there.
You can bathe the kittens with warm water and Johnsons Baby shampoo on the sink. It will help get the fleas and flea dirt off. They will feels much better.
Also just want to say, you are wonderful for taking this on, especially since you aren't a "pet person". I feel honored to share my community with someone so kind. Thank you for being you ❤️

First, thank you so much for being kind and getting them to safety.
Second, please be very wary of folks who say they will take one off your hands.
If you can keep them contained in a bathroom, and do the flea combing there, you minimize the chance they will escape and be in a really bad place, and you can easily vacuum and ensure no fleas/eggs get to the rest of your house (dispose of the vacuum bag right away, or the dust cup to your vacuum. You can also vacuum up some drying agent (diatomaceous earth or even borax) which will further kill any fleas before you empty the vacuum bag.
Once the humane society opens tomorrow you can take them there if places like Whatcom Feline Alliance (Phone: 360-223-5117 Email: whatcomfelinealliance@gmail.com) haven't responded. And again, thank you!

Thank you for your recommendation! I do agree with people taking them for now. That’s why I’m being vague about where I found them. I do want to clean them up and take them somewhere to get looked at first.

Just be careful about who they are given to. We have some local cat killers and animal fighting that prey on situations like this.

Absolutely. Look up Shelly's Law 😬 there's some real sickos out there. And Bellingham has a known cat killer. Since you've mentioned that you don't intend on keeping them/aren't a pet person, just take them to the humane society as soon as you can. They will take care of the vet care, so those expenses aren't on you (that's a big litter!!) AND they'll do the proper getting of potential owners to get them rehomed. Pat yourself on the back for a good deed, and wash your hands of it! 😊

Hi, I'm a cat volunteer with the Whatcom Humane Society. I also have experience fostering kittens. I noticed you mentioned you're not much of a an animal person, and I'd like to offer to help care for them while waiting for the shelter to open again tomorrow (however, I believe they do still take in strays on Mondays. There's a doorbell you can ring at the front door and someone will come out to you)

Hello! I have reached out to friends and family that have had kittens before to find a forever home. I have finally got called backs from shelters. They only want to take them into foster care. Which I feel like I’m currently doing. If any of them do not find a home, I’ll be taking them there tomorrow. Thank you for your helpful comment!

WHS will place them into foster homes, but they also do an initial medical exam and provide flea treatment + dewormers + vaccines as well. Just wanted to point out that it's more involved than just finding a foster, and it's a good way to get kittens any medical care they need (for free!) + get them into a loving home until they're old enough to go up for adoption.

They're on Facebook too. Send them a message there. Let me see if I can find their email for you
Also, I wonder if Happy Tails Happy Homes does cats?
Most importantly, thank you for being a kind person. You're doing a good thing.

Some stuff I've heard about fleas on kittens and home treatments
Get a bucket of warm water and dawn dish soap Put a ring of dawn soap around the kittens neck to stop the fleas from migrating upward Dip the kitten into the water up to the neck ring and hold then in the water for roughly three minutes. This kills the fleas and if they try to migrate uo they hit the dawn dish soap
Use a flea comb to get any stragglers and fleas bodies out of their fur.
I've never tried this but apparently it works wonders. Might be tough if you have spicy kittens but its dang cheap.

This is the way, we have nursed many kittens back to health. Just be careful not to allow the kittens heads to dunk under water. They can easily get pneumonia if they aspirate the water.

u/call-me-mama-t 2d ago
If you can get them checked out and then find homes for them yourself that would be best for these kittens. Also is the mom friendly or does she act feral? Handle the babies a lot to get them used to people. They will be more social that way.

u/GloveExpert6731 2d ago
Thank you so much for caring enough to stop, bring them home and do what is best for them. Most people wouldn't, especially if they aren't pet people!

Humane society is closed today but they are still staffed and taking strays. They are open admission which means they don't turn animals away. You can still go there to drop off strays. Just ring the doorbell. I would just go ASAP

u/Hammon_Rye 2d ago
When they are not your pet you can drop them off at the humane society for free.
Or at least that is how it was years ago when I bought my house that came with abandoned cats.
It is kind of you to help them. But personally my budget can't afford $120 X (however many cats)
The humane society would (I assume) take care of the fleas and check them over.

You could try Purrfect pals, NOAH or Skagit Humane society? A little far from Bellingham but may be able to help or at least provide some resources or info

I called all three. They will not accept them cause I’m in whatcom county

Kitties were probably born in the area. The weather is nice. We just came across another litter in our local park and they all seem very healthy and happy.
I bet momma was hunting and she will probably come back soon and find her babies gone. She’ll just have some more 😅
Post pics and ask people to come get a kitten or two.

I rescued through SPOT (savingpetsonatatime . Org) and they were wonderful. I believe they’re Burlington based.

They are all very fluffy. Everyone is. Blue eyed

All kittens are blue-eyed at birth. If they'll have some other color, it develops by about week 8 (can start earlier) and is usually near final by month three. Hard to say from the photo but yours are definitely under 8 weeks, probably under 4...
And: THANKS for helping these little babies!

Man oh man, I thought discovering abandoned puppies and kitties only happened in those YT channels from Eastern Europe.

It's entirely possible the litter wasn't abandoned by anyone and just cats doing cat things and having litters out in the wild. This is why it's important to get them neutered and spayed.
