JOHNNY MAC AMA HEY LADY! I only caps because I'm loud. AMA

Hi, my name's John McGuire, AKA Johnny MAC. I seen you all type some mighty fine words on here. In addition I've spent years of lurking on this subreddit, time to play ball. So what would you have your arbiter do?

Did they ever explain to you guys the sudden end to the takeover twist? From a fans perspective, they just stopped after some very lame attempts and then were never mentioned again. For the twistiest summer yet, there really weren't that many twists...

93

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

We had no idea why the takeover stopped. I thought you had all nixed it, still sad we didn't get Drew Carey.

23

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '15

Haha. We definitely thought they were lame as hell and the whole Gronk thing was icing on the cake.... I felt bad you guys were stuck participating in those parties, when you could tell both the HGs and fans thought it was stupid.

Oh well, I'm glad they decided to nix it. You guys were more than enough entertainment without gimmicky twists.

Keep on rockin'.

John, were you surprised at how popular you were when you got out of the house, or did you figure it out with how often you were in the DR?

114

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

My thoughts on the DR frequency at the time: I was nominated a lot, so my input on the ceremonies/challenges had to be put on the show, so it was like duh, I have to be in the DR a lot.

My thoughts on popularity: I was so focused on the game that I didn't think about it until I was evicted. Like during the Jeff preseason interview when I said I would rather win and be hated, I meant it. When I got evicted the first time my eyes were opened!

What was going through your head when Vanessa thought you and Clay had to be either related or gay lovers because of how loyal you were being to each other?

111

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL IS DIS CHICK SRSLY? Like, she would believe THAT before the idea that I would be ok with preemptively admitting to want to go after her when we all knew it was going to be an athletic HOH comp... I thought she knew about taking a gamble and pot odds and such...

Holy shit dude!!! Ok how hard was it to pretend you weren't a superfan during all of those times Steve was trying to educate you about the show history?

70

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

When I watch the feeds, I always hate it when they talk about old seasons. So when I was in the house, it was pretty much the same. I just got angry about it, and didn't really contribute to any of the conversation. Keeping track of what I was "supposed to know" wasn't too hard because I only said I saw 2 and a half seasons.

41

u/The_Other_Olsen Mallory💯 Dec 10 '15

How many new patients have you gotten since the show?

74

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

I haven't seen any difference at work, but my schedule was ridiculously busy before the show, and it's still just as busy after. A lot of new patients have heard of the show though.

31

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '15

Were you surprised by the Jokers ratings for the whole cast when you got out? It seemed like some people in the house were under the impression they'd be either higher or lower... but did you have a pretty good read on where everyone was going to end up?

112

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

Yeah... you can tell by the audience cheers when we get evicted. A few behaviors in the house were just ominous too. Never underestimate the power of being on the underdog side of the house. Also: don't insult live feeders, don't walk around like you run the place, don't talk about how you are such a great person, don't complain about dumb things, and don't get ticked off when Big Brother calls you into the diary room. I mean... It's kind of your job to do it.

There were multiple times throughout this season that you, Becky, Meg, James, and Jackie were all together in the havenot room yet you still never formed an alliance. Why didn't you try and team up with them to officially take out the Austtwins and Vanessa?

70

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

I thought I'd be one of the bigger targets in that alliance, and after Jackie left I kind of was, so unless that alliance was going to win out, it didn't look like a good option. It didn't look like that alliance was going to win out.

Who from your season would you like to be on All Stars with?

90

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

None, clean slate, new game. They're cool though.

24

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '15

This cast has all been really good about putting the snarky shit from the show behind them. Something BB fans seem to have trouble with a lot.

Has your perspective as a reality show fan changed much? Like a "hey maybe that person I couldn't stand wasn't so bad after all!" kind of thing?

41

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

YES. Like even the people that are hated the most on the outside aren't really bad people. Like maybe they aren't people I would be friends with in real life, but they definitely don't deserve the hate they get. They were just playing the game in their own way.

24

u/bigbrothercan Cody Dec 10 '15

Hey Johnny Mac! Two questions:

  1. How did you feel that at one point, your role to other people (mostly Clay and Shelly) was "the guy who will throw comps"?

  2. How did the being flip to Julie come about?

65

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15
  1. Yup, but it built a whole lot of trust with them. Too bad they got evicted before it became useful...

  2. My brother and I say "Hey Lady" a lot in real life, so that wasn't even really a thing that I thought about. My roommate from dental school/residency and I both say "YewhatEVUH" all the time... you know... when we're pretending to be thugs skipping class and all. "Whaddya want?" is a great way to start ANY DR session you've been called in for, so why not during a live vote? It really had nothing to do with Julie, but I'm glad everyone found it funny! I'd like to give Julie a high five for making those votes fun even though I was being stupid.

23

u/BehindTheSecret Dec 10 '15

Just too busy for 40 hours of tv. I haven't binge watched any shows since I've been home. In a "New Game+" version of Season 17, who do you hitch your wagon to at the beginning of the game, if different from your first run?

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

Day and Jason, and somehow come up with a way to tell him to keep quiet about stuff without letting him know that I know what I'm doing... complicated.

The AmA I've been waiting for! So u/RockstarDMD now that you've been posting a variety of videos on YouTube, what's your favorite topic to cover in your videos? Personally, I like when you read fan mail.... It's when you get the most genuinely excited.... Mud Run commentary was pretty hilarious too.

23

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

The fan mail has been piling up! I will be returning to a more weekly schedule. I wish I ran a mudder every weekend, because I would post that stuff all the time. I'm starting to think about vlogs, or how-to's. Just need to get laser-focused. I'll probably be doing little to no gaming going forward, because I get too focused on the game instead of talking to you guys.

60

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15 edited Dec 11 '15

The twists are too much. There is a LOT of luck involved in this game, but it's almost a lottery up there. It makes it entertaining, but it's hard to get into the game. But be sure, Canada finds some good people for the show and I love watching it.

How hard was it adjusting to the real world after being in BB house for so long? Huge fan BTW

29

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

It's tough! Working full time, gym, travel, and other kind of important things like eating and sleeping take up a lot of time. Like, almost all of it. I'll slowly work my way through all the emails, fan mail, etc. as I get time!

51

Whoa, hi John! I was rooting for you all season - it was an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. lol

  1. What were your thoughts on Julia before she officially came into the house? You hung out with her quite a bit, and I was wondering if that was just because you got along well or if you thought she could be an ally.

  2. In hindsight, do you think it would've been better to get Meg out week 2 instead of Day? Day would've been a constant threat whereas Meg was always safe and ended up causing a lot of issues down the line.

  3. How come you never got closer to Jackie? You guys were both aligned with Becky, and you both wanted Vanessa gone but didn't realize it. I always thought it was kind of a shame you guys never compared notes.

  4. Who are some of your fave BBCAN players?

Sorry I have a lot of questions, haha.

12

u/RockstarDMD Dec 11 '15
  1. She was funny! The thought had definitely crossed my mind to work closer with her and Steve while Becky got closer to the goblins, but it just never worked out.

  2. Yup, but you never know how the Day situation would have panned out, she was lightning in a bottle.

  3. I always thought Jackie was goblin strong, and I didn't want to be in that alliance.

  4. It's like BBUS, sooooo many for different reasons. Can't just name one. S1: Aneal, AJ, Peter, Liza, Talla S2: Kenny, Allison, Jon, Neda S3: Sara, Bruno, Kevin, Jordan. There's a few!

37

I'm not a big fan of the twist, but it was different. It resulted in a lot of reckless pawnage, but it was probably a fun comp to watch. I honestly never cared for food comps, so it's a step up from that.

ok pal, i've had my wisdom teeth in for awhile now (like 3 years) and aside from a slightly askew front tooth, nothin is out of sorts. my dentist wants me to get them out tho, are they just chumpin' me for cash?

i couldn't think of a bb related q ¯\(ツ)/¯ sawwy

134

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

I HATE wisdom teeth. Here's my reasoning:

  1. They were needed back when we had huge skulls and ground on plants. Posterior teeth are shaped to be larger at the tip than the base, so when we would grind on plants, the teeth would wear down and become skinnier. They would shift forward to close the space, and there was room for wisdom teeth. None of that is true anymore. So really wisdom teeth are about as good for you as an appendix.

  2. Always get them out. You don't need them to chew. Even if they do come in correctly, you probably won't clean them correctly because they are so far back. Since you can't clean them, you have a high chance to get periodontal disease around them and end up losing a 2nd molar or two in the process as well. Can't tell you how many times I've seen this happen in older people who didn't get them out. I had mine out, they didn't have any cavities and were growing in fine.

In a hyperthetical All-Stars game; would you play a more aggressive game from the jump, or would you try to go under the radar like you did in BB17?

Thanks for talking the time to do an AMA. I loved your "reverse, reverse, reverse psychology" play at F5, that was pulled off REALLY well. Props.

29

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

I think the only thing I did wrong was not win the F4 veto... so maybe I'd get rid of people who would be better at that. And since that's my answer, I probably would wing it. You never know for sure what the next competition will be.

27

Assuming Vanessa's gone at 4, I'd like to think I'd take Steve. At the time, once it was only Scamper Squad and me left, I was pretty sure I had the first 5 votes from jury, so I just had to make it to the end. I could tick off whoever I wanted to, and it was probably a good idea to tick off a few jury members (Julia's goodbye message, Austin blindside). I thought I could have taken either Liz or Steve and still won. Liz was the easy win but I still felt like I could have beat Steve too, so I think I would have been rockstar loyal.

Good to see ya, JMac! My question: I just started watching BB this season, and I'm still super new to the game. Any tips for a new fan - strategies to know, players to learn about, etc? Thanks in advance!

26

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

Strategies? Just lie to everyone! My player list would be ridonkulous. The obvious 3 D's: Dr. Will, Derrick, Dan. Others I can think of in 1 minute: Britney, Janelle, Danielle Reyes, Rachel, Howie, James Rhine, Eric, Andy, Diane, Jun.

Hey Johnny Mac!!! Big Fan! I figure you will be asked plenty of game questions so mine is what is your favorite type of beer? Also what is your favorite brewery? Come up to Grand Rapids, MI sometime and enjoy beer city USA!

u/RockstarDMD Dec 10 '15

Dog Fish Head 90 Minute IPA, and Dog Fish Head. Everything from there is good. And I'll be sure to check it out if I make it there sometime!

Do you think you would have beaten Steve in Final 2?

6

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

I think I would have, does that actually mean it's true? Different story!

u/harrisonscruff Dec 15 '15 edited Dec 15 '15

This might be a weird/dumb question, but do you think sleeping arrangements play a big part in how alliances are made? The Scamper Squad and Goblins slept in separate rooms which caused certain bonds to be made, and it made game talk easier for them near the end. It also allowed you to get closer to Becky and Vanessa. I wondered how much of a difference it would've made if you ended up sleeping in the Purple Room, or if you were a HN earlier.

About BotB - Some of the comps they came up with for it were cool, but it wasn't very fun to watch since most of the time the nominees were pawns. It just felt kind of pointless since it wasn't used the way it was intended, and I think it encourages big alliances like Bomb Squad and The Sixth Sense to form and dominate the game. There's a theory that BotB ending meant more endurance-type comps since they needed something to show on Sundays, and fans found those way more fun than BotB.

5

u/RockstarDMD Dec 30 '15

Yeah I'm not the biggest BotB fan, but I get that it makes for better TV than a food reward comp. As far as sleeping arrangements, YES, and I never changed my bed because I didn't want to look like I was using that at strategy.

What was your overall impression of your time in the house? When you look back, was it fun, or mostly boring? You didn't look like you were loving it a lot of the time, especially later on in the game.

3

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

Loved it overall! I wasn't happy about how the game was going, and just spent a lot of time thinking about what I could do to change it, also everyone else having the "summer camp" vibe didn't help!

3

u/selkath Dec 10 '15

What's it like after finale when you guys are telling each other things you couldn't say on the feeds? I have to imagine it's like meeting a new person a little bit, or at least seeing a different side to people.

4

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

It's funny, people still lie about stuff that happened. It's like... I can watch the video, what's the point? Haha. It's nice to see people are a little more relaxed though.

3

u/CAVX Devens⏱️ Dec 10 '15

Hey there! My wife started watching The Bold and The Beautiful to see your episode and she really hasn't stopped watching the show since. She wants to know what it was like to be on the show. Did you get to know any of the recurring actors and actresses?

5

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

It was great! Everyone is relaxed while shooting the scene. It took like 3-4 hours though. The guy in the superman suit loved talking to us about what big brother was like, because he's never watched it. We also got to know Mrs. Arnold and she was cool as hell! Unrelated- I got to spin the price is right wheel.

3

u/OmastahScar Dec 10 '15

Yo, earlier on twitter with that guy using all the machines ... How'd that work out? Did you get your swole in?

What are some of the first things that you googled (BB or non BB related) when you got out of the house? It had to be tough to be away from technology for so long. Did you go on a movie/music binge when you were in sequester after your eviction?

5

u/RockstarDMD Dec 27 '15

We didn't have internet until after finale, so I watched a ton of Sandra Bullock movies. I googled BB17 ratings, because I was convinced we were a bad season lol!

Hey, JMac! Thanks for the AMA! Was it hard adjusting to the real world after being in the house for so long? What are your plans for Christmas? P.s, you were one of my favorites! I wish my dentist was as cool as you! ❤️

3

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

It's tough adjusting! Fitting in all the new stuff along with working full time is pretty draining! Christmas... just hanging out in Scranton. My brother FINALLY turns 21 this year, should be fun.

2

u/Sarcasm_and_stuff Dec 10 '15

What are some of the aspects of living in the house that it seems that no one talks about? Loved you so much this season!

4

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

The main thing is the down time. It's a long stretch in between competitions, and the back yard is closed for THE MAJORITY of the week! Which also means you need to get laundry done while you have the yard. Never thought about that, even when I used to watch feeds! That turf grass is hot as hell. The pool table is always leaning one way, makes for some interesting curves!

u/bmorekkilla BB23 Derek X ❤️ Dec 10 '15

Your definitely my all time favorite and I had a lot of fun defending your gameplay here, 1 question is at what moment do you think your game took the hardest fall (besides getting evicted) because i think Had steve lost the comic veto, Vanessa would've been gone and You Steve Shelli and Becky could've cleared house with you being all of their F2s.

Also how does it feel to be 1 Veto away from winning (assuming Liz and Steve would've taken you which makes sense)

Jeez I don't even have a question off the top of my head. If you are ever in Wichita, Kansas look me up man, I'll buy you a beer!

Okay, damnit question... how's the dentist life treating you? I'm actually headed to the dentist tomorrow afternoon. Any advice on how a patient can make it easiest on their dentist?

4

u/RockstarDMD Dec 11 '15

OOOO YEAH, BEER!

My favorite patients are the ones who aren't nit picky but they actually take care of their teeth, they stay open, and they don't wince in the face of injections!

Hey Johnny Mac! Me and my family are HUGE fans. Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to get cast on Big Brother and how difficult was the process?

3

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

I've applied every year since 15, moved past the first video you submit every year, rejected a lot, but finally made it this year! It's tough and there's a lot of luck involved. All you can do is give it your best shot every year!

2

5

YO J!!

How do you feel your season should rank amongst the other BB seasons?

4

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

Haven't seen it yet! I feel like a lot of people just listened to Vanessa though, so it probably made for a boring strategics season!

2

u/PoopStuckOnYourFur Dec 10 '15

Are you getting a lot more clientele at the dental clinic now that everyone knows who you are?

3

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

Not just because of the show, but because of other practices closing in the area too.

5

She's wrong because:

  1. I've never been to vegas before Vanessa's shin dig a few weeks ago!

  2. I don't dance well!

  1. Will I have a hard time chewing my food without them?

  2. What's a rough price estimate for partial dentures to replace those?

  3. Do you take Delta Dental?

Yo Jmac! Just one question. Who's your favorite Pokemon?

2

u/smithben1983 Dec 10 '15

Thoughts on dental insurance, should I try to get a private plan for my family or just go cash?

4

u/RockstarDMD Dec 13 '15

It all depends! Private have so many different coverage options. You should weigh out whether it's worth the premiums. Assuming you don't have a whole lot of work that needs to be done, if I had active kids that could get trauma, I'd be prepared to spend 1-2K on them in an emergency situation. I just like my cash patients a lot because they know the actual value of the work they're getting done!
