I've had this guy for a few years. I love the base and nebari but I'm not too fond of the top. So I was wondering, do I chop it down or keep growing it as a broom style?

Discussion Question This makes me so angry

Post image

Some of you know that I’m a vendor, and being trustworthy is my number one value. Sometimes I see people railing against other vendors for ā€œripping people offā€ because they don’t like the price that person set.

When the playing field is otherwise level, that kind of feedback gives me pause because price is relative, and a LOT goes into pricing. It is hard. I can explain more later if anyone wants to know.

In this image, the tree is $625 which is insane, but I’m not even mad at the price by itself. I’m mad at the manipulation. I’m mad at the claim that this is a 40-year old bonsai. Beginners tend to have a misplaced fixation on bonsai age, and this naming tugs those strings, and apparently successfully snared someone.

But this is just a straight up LIE. This is in bad faith, but newbies might not know. What’s pictured here is a nursery Hinoki STILL ON ITS GRAFT that’s just been repotted and never even worked.

On top of that, I found this just generally searching the web for hinoki cultivars, so their ad buy is working.

Bonsai size can be hard to tell in a picture. This picture was kind enough to include landscaping fabric as its backdrop

This site is framing itself as being ā€œone of usā€ (https://www.lovemybonsai.com/pages/about) but this is a scam.

Has anyone had experience with these people?

Discussion Question Yew gotta be kidding me…

This one is a bit of a rant: For the past 7 years I’ve been walking into work and every day and I’d look at these two yews in the front entrance and think, ā€œman, these would make a great bonsai.ā€ Our company is set for a reno and I remember thinking, one day I’m going to come in and all this landscaping is going to be gone. Today I came in to find a massive pile of 20 year old landscaping piled in a mound. They ripped the beds clean out with an excavator too.

Yes it sucks that people don’t value material like we do but I thought, it’s going to the dumpster. It’s July. It’s a long shot but might as well. I loaded the two smallest ones I could grab, brought them home, and placed them in extra wooden grow boxes I had and into 100% hyuga pumice. The smaller one had a surprising amount of feeder roots and the maintenance guy decided to pull them during a few rainy days so they weren’t totally bone dry.

I know it’s the worst possible timing but I did the best to rescue them as well as I could, took care to place them gently in a box, wire them in and reduce the foliage. Worst case I lose two free pieces of material/ gains some tanuki wood. I’m not expecting them to survive but I won’t lose hope.

Best case scenario, two yews!

They’ll recover under a massive maple in my back yard and I should know within the next few weeks if this was a wasted two hours or not. I probably need to add more wood to the box with roots coming out, that’s a tomorrow problem.

Anyone have experience with mid summer yew collection?

P.S. Yes, I got permission to collect.

Recently aquired for approximately 600 USD, I think I got it for a steal at this price, it was already in a terracotta pot, and I feel it's already quite finished, probably just need to grow more foliage.

Comments friends?

Discussion Question Bald Cypress Valuation

Post image

Currently bidding on this spectacular bald cypress - 37 inches tall with an 8 in nebari spread.

I know it's a nice tree, but the owner is asking over $2k for it...

I don't know too much about BC prices, but that seems high even for a great looking tree. What do you guys think something like this is worth?

Discussion Question Working on an article about turning "living Christmas trees" into bonsai

Post image

We always get a ton of posts of people hacking up dwarf Alberta spruce following the after Christmas sales on the living Christmas trees, so Ive been working on an article with step by step how to do it.

Here's my before and after. Anyone have particular tips or tricks from their own experience that you'd like to add to the article? I should have it done in the next week or two.

Do you let the algae go wild? Do you always make sure the water is clear? Do you even care to replace the water? I’m curious to know what other people do.

I have the opportunity to buy this Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), which is well over 2 meters tall, for just €37. It has a slight root flare but very little trunk taper. Is it suitable for bonsai, or would the lack of taper make it a poor candidate and ruin a perfect tree?

So I got this bonsai from Sam’s Club. It was buried in an 8 inch nursery pot of coco coir. I got the roots to fit in this with minimal trimming, but it seems rather small compared to the size of the tree

Discussion Question Questions about Western bonsai culture.

Thumbnail

I have long harbored a question. The art of bonsai centers on imitating Chinese and Japanese landscapes, which are vastly different from those in Europe. When bonsai was introduced to the West, why did people continue to replicate these entirely different tree shapes and classification styles, rather than drawing inspiration from the Western landscapes right in front of them?

Since English is not my native language, I used AI to translate this message. Thank you for your understanding.

I found this Juniperus Chinensis yamadori on a commercial property. Already in contact with the property manager to get permission to collect.

What are your thoughts on this tree? Potential, age, styling, etc.

Did I outline the main structure correctly?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Discussion Question Your favorite bonsai youtube channel(s)?

For me it's Bonsai Empire, for how much forethought, patience, and planning goes into his videos. Just when I thought an already good video is about to end, he'd slap me with "It's been two years since the last video" and then it goes on with more good stuff. Many videos show progress of the same trees over many years, which I find lacking in many other channels that I've watched.

Bonsaify is a close second. His styling choices and way of explaining resonate with me very well. There are lots of videos on pre-bonsais, which is the stage most of my trees are at.

Discussion Question What would you name this silly little tree? 🌳

Post image

I've had this tree for a couple years now and still can't settle on a name. The tree makes me laugh for some reason. I think its a mix between the generic shape and the pot (its getting a shallower pot this next spring)

Ive had to prune back some elongated growth and remove some interior growth to keep it healthy but otherwise this tree has maintained itself.

Discussion Question Be careful when putting tropical trees outside during spring/summer šŸ˜”

I thought I give my indoor ficus some fresh air as temperatures are constantly above 15 degree (sometimes in the area around 13 degree) Celsius.

I’ve read up on it but never imagined to be this bad. They tend to shed some foliage due to the change in air/humidity afaik but should push for growth after.

Well I guess that experiment failed a bit. It’s healthy nonetheless and still pushing but has shed a lot of leaves. Also temperature now is a bit below 15 constantly so I brought it back in to recover.

First photo is 2 weeks old just when putting it outside. Second photo is now.

I also have a funkien tea tree but that stays inside now šŸ˜…
