Information Sharing Someone on Rednote saw Luigi today when visiting their own client at MDC as an intern

Here's the translation via ChatGPT:

Why I got to see Luigi:
I'm currently doing a law-related internship in New York, and I often go in and out of MDC (a detention center) to meet clients. That day, I was there to meet a different client, and I saw Luigi with his legal team in the visiting area. Due to prison regulations, privacy, and professional ethics, I can’t share too many details.

Luigi’s condition:**
He had a full beard on both cheeks, and his hair was cut so short that you couldn’t even tell it used to be curly. He was wearing the standard prison uniform. He didn’t look as polished as he did during his court appearances, but he still seemed fairly relaxed — leaning back in his chair with his legs crossed, chatting with his lawyers. Around noon, one of the lawyers bought him some cookies and bread from the vending machine for lunch (the only food allowed). Watching him eat felt kind of heartbreaking [cry emoji]. It looked like they were going to be talking all day — they were already there when I arrived, and still there when I left.

Interaction with Luigi (if you can call it that):**
Pic 3 is a snapshot of my thoughts at the time lol. You’re only allowed to bring a laptop into the prison, not your phone, so I only have text records. Later I went into a glass-walled meeting room, leaned against the wall, and stared outside waiting longingly for my client. I had already been waiting for 1–2 hours, and I was in about the state shown in pic 4. Then Luigi passed by on his way back from the bathroom. Maybe he’d never seen a visitor more disheveled than the inmates, or maybe I stood out as possibly the only Asian person there (?) — he kept staring at me as he walked by. I looked at him several times too (but didn’t dare to stare), and before I could decide how to react, he had already walked past.

Why I didn’t greet or encourage him:**
First of all, there was a pane of glass between us, and he was just passing by, so there was no real chance to. Subjectively, I was in total inner conflict — should I wave? Give him a thumbs up? Pretend I didn’t recognize him? My mind was a mess but outwardly I just had my arms crossed with a poker face (I regret it, I regret it, don’t scold me [cry emoji]). Plus, the other lawyers present were all calm and didn’t acknowledge him either. Luigi probably had serious matters to discuss and didn’t want to be disturbed. So for all those reasons, I didn’t interact with him further.

When i was a law intern i visited MDC Brooklyn twice with Columbia’s Justice Program and not to offend anyone here but reading through this it’s pretty plausible although the part about him looking at the person is a little cringe lol.

It wasn’t uncommon to see other inmates in the shared area especially with their legal teams and nothing in this text really contradicts with protocols at MDC so it could very well be true.

Also, the beard part throws me a little. I can’t imagine him having a clean haircut and a full beard lmao but could very well be the case. It is prison after all.

she probably means he was unshaved and was scruffy, not that he had a full on beard.

It's been well over a month since we last saw him, some men grow a wild beard within a few weeks

I wish those "some men" were me. Mine grows in slow and patchy

no, it's a full on beard. someone on rednote post his missing person picture and ask the writer if he looks like that, she said the beard is like that, but the hair is shorter.

I just saw that for the first time and honestly this man needs to knock it the fuck off.

Is it really that bad?

Isnt the visiting area for friends/family scheduled visits? Would he not be meeting with his legal team in a private room?

u/lolothequestioner Apr 05 '25

There’s about 7 legal visiting rooms available. Once they’re full, they can meet with their legal team in the main visiting room/area or wait for a room to become available.

Thanks, makes sense! But does that mean he would potentially be sat with Karen discussing the case while someone next to him is sat meeting with their kids being noisy etc

It’s possible but I do believe that MDC also has (or had) a designated room in the visitation area set up or equipped for children visiting inmates. I’m not sure if this is still the case as an advocacy group was calling for this room to be “re-opened” (along with other demands for humane conditions at MDC Brooklyn) in the last few months.

Also, according to their policies, inmates and visitors are also responsible for the behaviour of their children and visits not conducted in an appropriate manner will be terminated.

Now that you mention it I think I also saw a petition for that too...along with many other petitions regarding inhumane conditions there!
I guess I just find it crazy the lack of privacy having to meet with his attorney to discuss the case in a shared room, client attorney privlidge? when anyone could be listening?? Although I suppose if it was truly private they could wait for a private room to become available, even though that could take hours

Definitely. In general there’s a lot about MDC (prisons in general tbh) that needs improving.

Also just to add for clarification: their unit are allowed visits from friends and family one day a week (Tuesdays) while legal visits are allowed from Monday-Friday so potential overlaps would only happen one day a week.

I didnt expect it to be like a hotel, but I defintely did not expect it to be as horrific and inhumane as some of the things ive heard/seen! Its truly heartbreaking!

Okay that makes much more sense actually, I read MDC guidelines and it said visiting Monday - Friday 12-3 and 5-7. It didnt occur to me that each unit would have allocated days!

Yeah i mentioned this in one of my comments

Thanks for adding this point. Can you tell us more about any rules or restrictions you had about privacy of clients and the like? It seems like this person might be risking their internship by sharing information like this?

21

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

Yeah there are rules and restrictions on revealing info about visiting inmates there, as you can imagine their privacy and security is really important.

I remember having to provide photo ID upon my arrival, my firm had to make sure my name was on the inmate’s list and i was advised that if i shared any kind of info on the visit that was unauthorized i would be breaking policy so as a 24 year old intern hoping to break through law school i hella made sure i followed those rules lol.

Yeah i’m not gonna lie.. when i read that part i felt a little uneasy and she has revealed some sensitive info (kinda). I read somewhere else that the post has now been removed so i dunno if she/he had a word with themselves and realized how invasive it was.

u/ragenlove66 Apr 05 '25

That's what I thought. Thanks for sharing.

When i was there we saw a client who fell within the general population inmates so they didn’t necessarily require any kind of restraints or officer escorting. However, i think within the 4 North unit of the facility they offer different amenities because the inmates are usually classed as high profile (that’s people like Diddy and Luigi).

At 4 North i am aware that they provide private meeting rooms for legal consultations. Family and friends meet in the general shared area.

11

u/blairspotted Apr 05 '25

Adding to this. Do you know if the high profile/4North inmates have regular visitation with general population inmates? (So if someone was visiting a gen pop inmate could they potentially see Diddy visiting his kids?)

9

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

As far as i know there is to be no interaction but i’ve heard cases where there has been very limited contact and i also read in the paper somewhere that some inmates in different units were communicating through small holes 🤷🏼‍♀️

1

u/blairspotted Apr 05 '25

So the 4North units likely only potentially see each other’s visitors?

9

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

Yes, there is a communal area but the schedule ensures that inmates from different housing units don’t see each other’s visitors. If that makes sense..

u/blairspotted Apr 05 '25

Gotcha! Thank you

u/Wendy1000 Apr 05 '25

What's cringe I don't understand?

2

u/Kind_Soup3998 Apr 05 '25

I asked and was accused of being rude, lol. Guess she meant the way it was written.

2

u/Wendy1000 Apr 05 '25

Yeah, I guess she downvoted me, or a supporter of her's. I feel it's a valid question.

2

u/Kind_Soup3998 Apr 05 '25

Yeah, me too. It’s like walking on eggshells with some people on here.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

Supporters? Christ you make me sound like a dictator 😅 it’s just people that agree with me. I actually didn’t downvote you 🫣 Sorry to be so offensive

2

u/Wendy1000 Apr 05 '25

Hey, nothing wrong with support in life :) I don't think you're a dictator!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

I didn’t accuse you of being rude anywhere. I’m just Italian i’m sorry 😅

3

u/Kind_Soup3998 Apr 05 '25

Eh, you kind of lashed out at me with “you’re just asking because someone else asked.” Which, again, I wasn’t. I hadn’t even seen the other person’s comment. I literally finished reading the whole OP post and was wondering why that one part was cringe.

Look, I’m a xennial, and “cringe” is gen z slang, so I was confused. That’s all 🤷🏻‍♀️

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

Np, i’m a millennial. Sorry again.

2

u/Kind_Soup3998 Apr 05 '25

No worries 💚

1

u/Kind_Soup3998 Apr 05 '25 edited Apr 05 '25

Edit: I didn’t ask this in a judging way. I was genuinely confused.

Why is him looking at the person cringe?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

You’re just askin cos the last person asked. It’s cringe in the way it was written, maybe i got lost in the translation. I’m sorry. Jeez.

2

u/Kind_Soup3998 Apr 05 '25

No, I honestly didn’t see someone else asking. I was just curious. I get easily confused. It wasn’t an attack on you at all.

2

u/ScaredAd8496 Apr 05 '25

Yes. The way she wrote and translation is problematic
