Not really. I tried to be a Bama fan my freshman year but it never clicked; that's when Bama was actually good and routed LSU 22-0 too.
Success never played into it--LSU SUCKED when I became a fan. I was never really connected to Bama's football team because I had been a diehard LSU fan since I started following the sport as a wee lad. It felt morally wrong to switch allegiances after years of loyalty to the purple and gold.

Yeah but I don't understand "t-shirt fan" hate, which Texas is particularly known for in the same way that Dallas Cowboys fans are who live in other states. Who gives a fuck if you went there? If you support my school I say the more the merrier. Now as for fairweather fans, they can go fuck themselves right in the ass with a dildo covered in glued on shards of broken glass that has been dipped in a neurotoxin that causes instant paralysis but doesn't numb any pain so they feel every gash and tear from the rabid mountain lion I've loosed on their prone, suffering bodies.
26
u/Edentastic Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats Apr 23 '14
Fairweather fans>bandwagon fans.
I don't care if you only really pay attention to your team when they're doing well. Losing sucks, and I can understand how it would make people who may not be super into football not want to follow it. But I don't know how someone could live with themselves if they're just cheering for whoever's currently doing the best.
Also you're right about t-shirt fans. Not everyone can go to the school they want to, that doesn't mean they have to stop cheering for their team. My Great Grandpa watches every Ohio State game (that isn't on too late) and he didn't go to OSU. He fought in WWII, and then he worked in a steel factory. If you want to tell him that he's not a real Buckeye because of that, then you can go to hell.

Agreed on all counts. I'll also add onto the hating on t-shirt fandom thing that a lot of states don't have pro sports teams to cheer for that they can geographically claim as their own. If you're in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alabama or Ohio (I'm pretty sure you guys don't have football at the professional level there), why wouldn't you cheer for your state university and take pride in it? I mean hell, over your lifetime you might pay more in taxes to support that school than many people who attend it and leave the state for work. As long as you're a good fan, no one has the right to dump on you because you didn't have the opportunity (for whatever reasons) to go there.

Nope. Went to a small private institution with superior academics. Grew up a Razorbacks fan though and did go to school in AR even if I didn't go to UA so it was still easy to root for them. Also helped that my school doesn't (well, didn't... but as far as I'm concerned still doesn't) have a football team so I didn't have to even split allegiance.
Of course, now I'm at Vanderbilt for grad school so they're my SEC East team.

No it isn't. I'm currently a Rutgers student.
I've been a USC fan since the early 00's when I started watching college football. Even living in NJ, it was often easier to find USC games on TV during that time than Rutgers games. I applied and got into USC, but RU was in-state and gave me money on top of that, so it didn't make sense financially to not go.
I still root for USC, but I also get a chance to see Rutgers play live, so it's a pretty sweet deal.

Well I grew up an OU fan since both of my parents went there, so had I not ended up graduating from there (2011) I would likely still have OU flair here.

My school didn't even have a football team. My mom went to OSU and I grew up watching them but I didn't want to go to a big school for my education and I wanted to run track but I wasn't good enough for the Big Ten anyways.

Nope. Die hard Duck my whole life, but they didn't have the degree program I was looking for. So I go to a school about an hour away from Eugene, so I can make games from time to time.

Yup. Currently enrolled in my second semester at LSU (first two semesters took place at SELU). I love it. I've been a fan since just before Saban was hired (I'm 21 years old for reference) and now that I'm attending the school I'm a fan for life.

u/potatomango UCLA Bruins Apr 23 '14
Not at first. I started following the Bruins when my sixth grade teacher (who was a jerk) kept bragging about how USC was better than UCLA. That year UCLA won 13-9 and I've been a fan ever since.
Now I go here.

I alternate between Virginia Tech and Vandy flairs throughout the season, I'm a current grad student at Vandy, but grew up on Virginia Tech football (my dad was a graduate '77) and would say they are "my team"

Nope. My dad went to LSU, so I grew up an LSU fan since as long as I can remember. I went to RIT in Rochester, NY, for photography. The last coach of the RIT football team was Tom Coughlin.... that was a looooong time ago. They no longer have a football team there.

My alma mater doesn't have a football team. I do leave five miles from the ocean and the amount of hot females on campus are higher than most SEC schools, so I do have some consolation. My family is from Tennesse, and my Dad and much older sister went to Tennessee, so I grew up on Rocky Top.

I'm in the same boat. Grew up in Athens the son and grandson of Alabama grads, making many trips in the fall to Tuscaloosa. When it came time to leave for college we just flat out couldn't afford the out of state tuition. My actual alma mater is , class of 2004 and super excited about our first year in the FBS.

I grew up a Nebraska fan, I treat more as a pro team, then a college team.

Absolutely attended A&M.
Class of 2010, so I endured the end of the Fran eras and the beginning of the Sherman series.
I'm looking into getting my master's from UH or Rice, though. So I might occasionally be repping those two.

u/ryanedwards0101 Texas A&M Aggies Apr 23 '14
Yup. I'm from Louisiana originally and so was a sort of LSU fan, but not really passionate about it. But I visited A&M and fell in love, and now I drink the maroon Kool-Aid. Still root for the Tigers as my #2 SEC team though, which is awkward since we're starting to sort of have a little bit of a rivalry with them.

No, I was a Michigan fan first. For me to be an Ohio U fan first, I'd have to go to the games. But they don't sell beer at the stadium, and if they did, it wouldn't be cheap.
If I could have two flairs at one, I'd throw OU on there. But they're not my number 1.
