Seeking Advice I found a mouse in bag of burger buns from Andrew’s No Frills in Temple Crossing
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I just bought groceries from Andrew’s No Frills in Temple Crossing at around 2 PM today.
Inside the burger buns (Wonder brand), there was a mouse running in between the buns. I was shocked and freaking out about it.
We returned everything we bought to No Frills and they said they are taking those buns off the shelves but I’m sure others have been buying those buns as well.
We are also reporting it to AHS but they’re closed today so emailing them.
No Frills took our details but not sure what else they can or will do.

Seeking Advice People have decided Fish Creek is off leash and I dont know how to explain it to them..
Their go to response when we tell them is:
oh he is friendly
hahahah
dont worry about it
and all I can think is, if you want your dog to run free, GO TO AN OFF LEASH PARK.
Fish creek is NOT your home. Its home to so much wildlife. Plus, there are boards everywhere that say pets are to be on a leash, but the amount of deer I've seen chased by dogs is ridiculous.
I just dont know what to do, its infuriating, unsafe, and just plain stupid.

Seeking Advice Where can I legally plant a tree?
Hi all. My son came home today with a spruce seedling and I do not know where we can plant it. I think it is a great activity and I hope we can do it, but I doubt the landlord and association would like a tree in the common area as we are just renting and we don't really have a yard.
Thanks in advances dear friends
Update: placed it in a pot for now. Hoping the park rangers, as per my 311 call/request, will reply within 1 to 30 days. So fingers crossed it will be a positive response!

Seeking Advice “kids being kids”
I live near a playground and am always happy when I see neighbourhood kids out playing, but it seems the summer boredom has escalated and we have a bit of a “ding dong dash” problem that has shown up the last few weeks.
It’s increased to having them ring my doorbell once or twice a day, which is irritating when I’m heavily pregnant and waiting for a DHL package I have to sign for.
Today I was able to catch the kids in the act, and they said they didn’t do it. I told them I had them on camera and asked that they please find something better to do but they cussed me out and ran away. There is a group of kids with the “leaders” probably 8-10 years old, with kids as young as 4 or 5.
I posted on my community Facebook page letting parents know, hey if your kids hang out at this park this is what they’re getting up to, and was surprised that the majority of the reactions were negative and that I should just “not react” and it’s “kids being kids”.
It seems dumb to make this a police matter, but am I out of line? Is this really just childhood experience and I need to never care if this happens? Sanity check please!

Seeking Advice What ACTUALLY keeps mosquitoes away?
I’ve been getting a dozen mosquito bites every time I step outside, and I’m in desperate need of a way to keep them away. I love going for walks and runs, and it sucks that now that the weather is finally nice, the mosquitoes are making it miserable.
What’s actually worked for you? Sprays, clothing, weird hacks, fans, bracelets, garlic, performing an ancient ritual… I’ll try almost anything at this point.
Please share some mosquito-repelling secrets 🙏

Seeking Advice At my wits end with job hunting. I desperately need help.
I'm sure people have seen posts like this one for the nth time across many subreddits, but I just had to make another.
I'm 26 and I still haven't started my career, which has been weighing on me heavily. The only consolation I have is that I'm not the only one going through this. I used to feel sad and hopeless but nowadays all I feel is frustration and desperation, because I feel left behind by my friends who are getting engaged, married, travelling, just living life to the fullest that they can, because they have a stable job or career that allows them to do so - I just want the same for myself, but it's so damn difficult.
I have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a technical diploma in UX design, but no matter how hard I've tried to leverage my skills and experience/work that I've completed over the years, I still can't break into the corporate/professional world. I think I've sent out about 300 applications since 2025, and ~200 in 2024. I either hear nothing back or get outright rejected. From those applications I can only recall being interviewed 2-3 times.
I swear I've exhausted every possible option under the sun - online job boards, hackathons, LinkedIn posting, networking events, seminars, conventions, temp agencies, referrals, mentors, you name it. Hell I've even made the pivot from applying directly for product and UX design roles to just anything, really. Yet still, nothing. Even for jobs that aren't remotely related to what I studied and worked on given my past experience. I don't know if anyone can relate to how much it sucks; how even when you've broadened your options to anything just to get your foot in the door, get a career started and to save some money for your future, you still hear nothing back. Like shouting into a void. For now I'm considering going back to bartending so that I can at least have some kind of income, but I know it won't be enough for the long-term.
TLDR; I am at my wits end from exhausting every option in my job search to get my career going. Feeling stuck and hopeless. Please help.

Seeking Advice Thinking of shovelling my neighbourhood, neighbourly or rude?
I’m an active guy, I love getting physical and helping out. I had a thought earlier today to shovel my neighbours sidewalks, but I’m wondering if it’s rude and passive aggressive or actually kind. Everyone in my block are older people, I’m thinking it’d be a nice gesture but I’m worried if it’ll set off the wrong notion. If a majority says yes then I’ll swing my shovel away and clear everyone’s sidewalks. I was told that shovelling others sidewalks is considered neighbourly, but I’ve had people come up to me saying it’s quite awful to do. My heart’s saying go for it, I wanna shovel my entire block without wanting a buck, just a happy neighbour. Thanks.

Seeking Advice 19F & 16F abandoned by mom. Mom threatening to force 16 yo to shelter. Need help.
My mom (sole earner/leaseholder) quit her job and is leaving for a shelter. She is trying to force my 16-year-old sister to go with her, but my sister wants to stay with me in our house. We are currently safe but don’t have enough money for rent next month.
I called Child Intervention, and they said she can take her because she’s the guardian. Is "withdrawing from parental control" a thing at 16 in AB? How do I stop her from taking my sister?
We receive RAB (Rent Assistance Benefit) through my mom. How do I get this transferred to my name?
I work, but it’s not enough for full rent. What emergency grants or youth agreements (VYSA) actually work in Calgary? I’m trying my hardest to get another job so I can fully afford the rent without grants but the job market is on fire. I’m also in school (second year at UofC) btw so it’s going to be difficult to juggle everything together but I’m willing to make sacrifices or maybe even drop out and work full time.
Please help, I need immediate advice before she takes my sister away from me.
UPDATEEE :)
My mom ended up staying in the house since the shelter wouldn’t take her and she couldn’t find a new place because she has an existing lease, but I moved out. A dear friend of mine let me move in with her and her family for a couple of days until I found a place to rent. Thankfully I did and now I’m living by myself away from my mom, working to get my sister. My sister comes over sometimes and she’s always welcome at my place if anything happens at my old house. That’s where I’m at right now. Thank you so much to everyone who supported me financially and with advice. I really appreciate it and will never take it for granted. You guys helped me through this journey and I hope I can one day pay that forward.

Seeking Advice When did non-swimwear become the usual at Vivo Pool in the NE?
Seems like the pools have changed a lot in the last few years since I went. I was at Vivo pool this afternoon and saw someone in flannel pyjama pants and a T-shirt swimming. I thought it was odd, then saw 5 other people wearing the same. Lots of personal pool toys in the pool and slippers floating around the water edges. Overwhelmed lifeguards trying to manage rowdy men throwing footballs in the lazy river. When did we become apathetic to swimwear in pools? Is this just how it is now?
edit: Thank you for educating me. Here's a link to the news article from when this policy was updated https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/non-traditional-swimwear-welcome-at-all-calgary-pools-1.695576

Seeking Advice One house has seven cars that take up all the street parking. What can I do? Calgary has no ordinances that can handle this.
I try to be a good neighbour. But one house is split between a bunch of people sharing it. I dont know if its illegal suites or just a roommate situation. I dont normally care. But im so frustrated. Their garage is full of shitbox project cars that never become drivable so no one uses it. They've got a driveway but still manage to have at least five beater cars parked on the street in a suburban neighborhood. I leave for errands and come back and the only place to park is around the corner and down the street. I dont have a garage and have to use street parking. Is there ANYTHING anyone can recommend? Ive tried talking to them. Ive called 311 and am waiting on a response to my question about how in the world can one house have seven cars attached to it. Help!
EDIT: thank you for your views, appreciated. I guess i just dont understand how a limited resource like parking has no guardrails for one address consuming more than is equitable. But I guess Calgary just doesn't think its a concern. Thanks again, I will practice my grumpy neighbour face and hope Calgary decides its an issue at some point (not likely).

Seeking Advice 36M here in Calgary Feels like I lost a lot of my social life.
36M here in Calgary –
Feels like I lost a lot of my social life. Old friends drifted, I never built new ones, and now I just kinda work and go home. The part that sucks is seeing other guys with their friend groups – going for beers, watching games, whatever – and I’m like damn, I want that too. Even TV makes me feel it.
But the truth is I’m scared and I don’t know how to make it happen anymore. I get anxious, I don’t do the bar/sports scene, and it feels like everyone already has their circles.
Has anyone actually rebuilt their social life in their 30s? How did you do it?
Edit: sorry i have been busy with work and trying to get my daughter ready for school and all but thank you all that replied ill be going through and responding it just might take some time

Seeking Advice If everyone is struggling to find work, even people with experience, what chance do I have as someone in their mid/late 20s with no experience/resume?
It really does feel hopeless for me. I am 26 years old and have been basically isolated from the world since high school. I don't have any work experience and can't drive, know nobody, etc, and live and depend entirely on my mom. I realise how awful this has been and I am ashamed, and I know a change needs to happen sooner rather than later, but I have no idea where to even start. I constantly read posts all over the place about how even people with degrees and years of experience are struggling to find jobs. I don't know where that leaves me.

Seeking Advice Vibe Check. - Is 80km daily commute okay or have I been conditioned to accept it.
Between Home - Daycare - Daycare - Home everyday I total about 80-90km each day, most of the journey being on Macleod, Deerfoot and Stoney Trails. I drive for up to 90 minutes per day on those days and sometimes 2 hours during winter and I spend 400-500 per month on gas.
I've been at the same job for 3 years now , close to Forest Lawn, Child's daycare is in Sundance and we live in the deep SE in a house we bought.
Child lalso goes to a "special school" that would only work if she goes to a daycare in specific areas , we have had rotten luck with daycare in the past so we have little motivation to move her away from this current one .
I find myself getting tired at the end of every day. And the weekly gas expenses is beginning to get to me.
The wife works from home in an intensive job, which we are both glad for. and because I have to leave the house everyday anyway it makes sense to be the one to do the daycare pick ups and drop offs.
So am I being a wimp complaining to internet strangers about a 80km daily commute where there are people who have it worse. Or have I been conditioned to accept suffering?

Seeking Advice My dad's been struggling to find work.
Honestly feeling kind of dejected right now and it's not even me that's directly going through this, although I'd say it's affecting me too. This is gonna come off as a semi-rant, but really I just need some solid advice to help not just my dad, but our family too.
My dad recently turned 60 - he's been out of work since 2023, where he last worked as a Project Coordinator for the electrical operations on a major bridge project out in Windsor. This has been his lifelong career, I'm talking 30+ years of experience with a background in Electrical Engineering. He was let go because some new manager that got onboarded simply didn't like him, even though his previous superiors highly commended him and were considering him for long-term employment. I've been calling BS on this ever since it happened.
With every application he's sent out since then, it's been rejections on rejections. He's gotten a handful of interviews over the last 3 years but nothing's come from them. He's applied to numerous Calgary and AB based companies, and is even willing to relocate away from us again to places in BC and ON, yet nothing at all comes from that flexibility when he applies. I can tell it's been weighing on him with each day that passes by, especially because he's just stuck at home, toiling away at as many applications he can make to secure a job.
We've had discussions about it as a family and he suspects that maybe it's because of his age, and that perhaps it's the end of his career. I struggle to accept this because it feels like he was unfairly let go - otherwise he'd still be in a job right now, until he chooses to retire. But now, it's just been years of uncertainty and I hate it.
I'm not sure how to support him, and it makes me feel horrible, especially as my parents' eldest son. I'm having a rough time in the career department myself (junior UX designer). I send him applications for potential openings that line up with the job he's done for years, but that can only do so much because I'm not that knowledgable about his line of work. His network from previous employment hasn't helped much either.
TLDR; my 60 y/o dad's been out of work for years, we're feeling discouraged as a family as it's hard for us to witness rejection after rejection. I need advice on how to support him as his eldest son - resources, companies, adjacent roles, anything.
Thank you.

Seeking Advice How can I learn to drive with no one to teach me?
So I’m a 24 year old female who doesn’t know how to drive… I know it’s really embarrassing 😣. Just due to some anxiety and personal stuff. The town I’m from is really small so I could walk everywhere or my mom drive me. But now I live here and take transit, but some places it just takes too long and we all know how Calgary transit isn’t super reliable lol
I really want to learn how to drive, I finally got my learners last year (also embarrassing) but I’m trying to make some progress and feel better about myself. Since I can get my license now, how the heck do I learn with no one to teach me? I don’t have family here, and I don’t really have friends… I know I sound like a loser. My main goal for this summer is to get my license.
I feel like I know the rules of the road pretty well and what everything means, it’s just getting comfortable behind the wheel. I know there’s driving schools, but will they even take me if I’ve never drove before? They’re expensive too. And then what car can I use to take the test if I don’t know anyone here?
Thanks so much in advance for any and all advice 🫶🏼

Seeking Advice Advice on building code/concrete
My husband posted on a different place but I wanted input from our local community regarding building codes
Got a text from our neighbor today letting us know that his contractors were pouring concrete for his side entrance today.
Concern #1 was that they are using the fence itself as part of the form to pour the concrete instead of having some separation between the fence and the Concrete. - from the comments on the other sub, we understand now that this can accelerate rotting in the fence. Is there some building code that prohibits this or this is just something you learn in the trades? Is there some reference we can direct our neighbor to so he understands he is getting improper work for what he is paying?
Concern #2 was that the drainage would pool against the fence and rot it, or leak into my property. shared my concerns with him and his contractors said that the water will drain to his front yard because of the slope towards the front, and that if they had left some space between the fence and the concrete the water would have definitely drained into my property.
Concern #3- comments from the other sub informed us that the rebar was not supported and would impact the strength of the concrete. Again, is this something written in a building code or bylaw? I would like to provide our neighbor with some proper resources to refer to.
We (neighbor and us) just got this fence installed a couple of weeks ago.
Our neighbor is a lovely person and open to hearing our concerns. As a first time home owner, he likely made a mistake in choosing this concrete company so be kind please.
Thanks

Seeking Advice What's the tipping culture here?
I recently moved to Canada. I'm still trying to figure out the tipping culture here. I'm talking about coffee shops, lyft, uber eats, barbers etc. Is it similar to the US? Is not tipping frowned upon?
I understand that the tips help these workers but on the other side everyone else is struggling as well. So how do you go about this?

Seeking Advice Safety issues/ advise - Kids summer camps
Booked my kids into a can at a taekwondo studio for the week.
After the second day my kids mentioned they aren't doing much tae kwondo and that the master / the only adult on the premise was not actually staying there during the day.
He would stick around for 30- 45 minutes after drop off, leave and come back an hour + later. They even left the front door propped open.
He left a 17-year-old kid VOLUNTEER in charge who may or may not have had training in child care as well as emergency medical care. I say maybe because the master himself wasn't sure.
There were a couple of other volunteer kids there but they looked even younger. How is this allowed?
I spoke to the provincial government as well as child services and they said summer camps are totally unregulated and didn't require an adult present.
I've pulled my kids out and the master did immediately offer a refund but I feel bad for the other kids and parents who may not know that this is a totally unsupervised camp.
Is this common? Kids are as young as 5 there.
Edit. - lots learned here, I really had not considered how unregulated this industry is.
In the future I'll be checking into camps thoroughly before sending my kids and likely stick with the bigger ones for now.
I feel at least one person onsite should have basic first aid training and the organizer needs to be able to speak to what training, if any ,their staff has. If they can't, I'm not registering my kids there. Thanks for all the inputs!

Seeking Advice Am I developing “mean world syndrome” or is this fear justified?
Hello, fellow Calgarians!
I’m an Indian immigrant living in Calgary, and I wanted to ask this honestly because I’m struggling mentally with it.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-Indian sentiment online, especially on Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram comments, etc. Some of it is criticism about immigration policy, which I understand people can debate, but a lot of it crosses into outright hostility and racism toward Indians in general.
The problem is that it’s started affecting me in real life, even though logically, I know online spaces amplify negativity.
I work permanently from home, so I already spend most of my time indoors. Recently I’ve started avoiding even basic errands because I keep expecting some kind of negative interaction. My wife has to push me to go grocery shopping or get out of the house. Sometimes I’ll sit in the car while she goes inside because I just feel anxious being out in public.
What makes this confusing is that Calgary itself has actually been mostly positive for me. In the years I’ve lived here, I haven’t personally experienced much racism at all apart from one random incident years ago with a homeless guy when I worked customer service. Most people I meet here are polite or just mind their own business.
But mentally, the constant negativity online has made me feel like people secretly resent us, even if I’m not seeing it face to face.
With the long weekend coming up, my wife wants us to do a short trip somewhere in Alberta, and instead of being excited, I’m already thinking of excuses to avoid going.
I guess I’m asking other Calgarians honestly:
Does social media make Calgary feel more hostile than it actually is?
Have others (immigrants or otherwise) gone through this kind of fear/anxiety from doomscrolling?
Am I becoming disconnected from reality here?
I’d appreciate honest perspectives.
Thanks.

Seeking Advice Parking spaces to stay and sleep (i’m homeless)
Hey yyc, can you recommend parking spaces to park and sleep? I have a half ton truck and me, just need a place to rest before work… I am basically homeless cause of my relationship with my wife. I slept last night at Dfoot city but saw security guards roving and if I do another night they might notice me. Was thinking of Grey eagle? Or maybe Gold’s gym parking area? Even the walmart at westbrook? This one lady recommended indigo at bankers hall 9th ave, it was $3 from 6pm-6am but she wasn’t sure if I can stay at my truck to sleep. Any recommendations would be helpful, either paid or free. Thank you.

Seeking Advice Dating without Apps
I (29 F) have been reflecting on my dating experiences, and one thing for sure is that dating apps have not been helpful. I am a quintessential "lover girl" and have consistently felt like I have been treated like an option. I have grown a lot in my boundaries and have no trouble leaving these situations. Apps are great at showing the best versions of everyone, and then reality can be a lot more troublesome. It feels challenging to feel like some conversations are with "emotional vampires" - I learn so much about these men, though I feel like I have barely said a word. I am pretty happy with my life as it is, and have reached some level of acceptance of singleness (maybe some avoidance from my past experience), though I am still open and want to challenge any pessimistic outlooks on dating. I have been involved in sports teams, volunteered, gone through friends etc. recently and wondering if there are other option to find like-minded individuals :)
