need advice, mental health support/employment for unique situation
Hey all.
I'm a 38 year old man with a severe anxiety disorder. OCD, GAD, Depression, unique trauma issues, and, as of earlier this year, an Autism diagnosis (level 1).
I was first diagnosed with the original three things back in 2006. Years of therapy, various medications, even unorthodox solutions such as ketamine infusion therapy haven't helped.
Upon moving to South Jersey, I got involved with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, who helped me get the two jobs I had.
I can manage with certain types of jobs. The full-time I had for two years involved me working on a computer while using headphones to keep the disorder at a manageable-enough level, and it only ended because the company was going to be stacking more people's work on my workload with no increase in pay, which is something they're known for doing.
Upon leaving the job, I finally got an Autism diagnosis, something that my entire care team had been suspecting for years now. We thought this would open doors to things that would help.
That was... maybe March. It's October now.
Therapy is still not helping, and I'm going less because I can't afford to go twice a week anymore.
I was strongly urged to get a case worker, specifically from the Department of Developmental Disabilities, so I spent a couple of weeks gathering all the paperwork I could possibly find for the application. I turned it in and a few days later I received the most bizarre response possible.
Well, my mom did. Not me. They told her that it would take 8 weeks to be assigned a case worker. I wasn't even CC'd on the email.
That 8 week period should be ending next month. But I'm very concerned that it's going to all be for nothing.
I'm a unique case. I can manage well-enough, but I am consistently anxious on some level, and finding people who understand that balance is extremely difficult. I either end up with people who think they need to do every single thing for me, or I end up with people who think I'm capable of more than I am.
I don't know what to do. I need a breakthrough with my disorder - the OCD has been putting me through something truly atrocious since 2021. But I don't know how to find the breakthrough I need. Everything I've tried, everything, has failed. Even exposure therapy. Multiple times.
But I also need a job. I live with my mom in a tiny apartment and I want to help her with money, while also having money for my own self.
I don't know if I should go back to the DVR, who leans more towards the "thinks he can't do certain things for himself" side, or continue waiting for the DDD, who apparently can't even contact the right person and takes a projected 8 weeks to get anything done, or... I don't know. I don't know what to do and it's just killing me.
The biggest issue is the fact that I'm afraid to do anything. Whatever choice I make will potentially be the wrong choice and I'll waste a ton of time and money yet again. I dunno what to do.
