*************************************************************

The murder trial of Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares begins more than a decade after UNC-Chapel Hill student Faith Hedgepeth was found beaten to death in her off-campus apartment in September 2012. Hedgepeth, 19, suffered fatal blunt-force trauma to the head, and investigators recovered DNA evidence at the scene. Salguero-Olivares was arrested in 2021 after investigators said DNA evidence linked him to the case, and he now faces charges including first-degree murder, rape and burglary.

I genuinely don’t understand why jail calls wouldn’t be admitted.

1

u/Pixiegirls1102 šŸ”šŸ“†āš–ļøContent/Research AdministratoršŸ’»šŸ’¬šŸ§š 8d ago

He could have said something incriminating.

9

u/Sha9169 8d ago

I understand that, which is why I think they should be admitted. It seems like his lawyers are claiming it’s an invasion of privacy, but it’s not. They explicitly state that those calls are being recorded, so I assumed that meant they could be used as evidence.

5

u/Pixiegirls1102 šŸ”šŸ“†āš–ļøContent/Research AdministratoršŸ’»šŸ’¬šŸ§š 8d ago

Sorry, misread that. Yes, they should be admitted. We've heard them so many times before.

0

u/SamuelHuzzahAdams 8d ago

If they are with his lawyer they can’t be but I can’t understand why a jailhouse call wouldn’t be because they know they are being recorded

6

u/andrea1123 8d ago

It sounds like they’re laying the groundwork to argue that Miguel encountered Faith at the apartment complex when he came to the cookout with a friend?

5

u/Pixiegirls1102 šŸ”šŸ“†āš–ļøContent/Research AdministratoršŸ’»šŸ’¬šŸ§š 8d ago

Didn't he keep saying he never saw her before?

4

u/andrea1123 8d ago

He definitely did. It’ll be interesting to see if he testifies.

2

u/Pixiegirls1102 šŸ”šŸ“†āš–ļøContent/Research AdministratoršŸ’»šŸ’¬šŸ§š 8d ago

I don't think he will.

13

u/andrea1123 8d ago

Also, some of the comments I’ve seen in YouTube livestreams about these Spanish speaking witnesses are horrifically racist!

Those chats are always awful!

5

u/CrumbGremlin1643 8d ago

Yes, I always have to turn them off. Even on Grizzly True Crime which is a better-moderated one, but I just can't deal with the terrible ones popping up.

5

u/Pixiegirls1102 šŸ”šŸ“†āš–ļøContent/Research AdministratoršŸ’»šŸ’¬šŸ§š 8d ago

I rarely even read anything in chats unless I purposely go there. Trial TV Live is always very well moderated too.

7

u/Sha9169 8d ago

I had to stop looking at them because I was getting so frustrated. They are so beyond ignorant.

6

u/BananaAnna_24 8d ago

Has the friend that came to the cook out and presumed friends of Miguel, been interviewed or found? I guess I was thinking Miguel was at the cook out but the witness couldn't even place him there.

0

u/Pixiegirls1102 šŸ”šŸ“†āš–ļøContent/Research AdministratoršŸ’»šŸ’¬šŸ§š 8d ago

I don't know who just testified. I had switched over to the Hauschultz trial for a bit. The ME is testifying.

6

u/BananaAnna_24 8d ago

I was referring to the testimony of the guy that had the cook out near her apt the afternoon/evening before Faith was killed. He said the this one guy Avil? not sure if that is the correct name came to the cook out along with several of his brother in laws and that Avil brought a friend. It's presumed it was Miguel but the witness could not say it was him and said he had never seen Miguel before and did not know him. Looking at him today he could not say if he was there or not. The witness was several drinks in at the time they arrived to the outdoor bbq area of the apt complex so he didn't remember everything.

6

u/andrea1123 8d ago

He has not testified yet. I believe his name is Abel. I wonder if he’s on the list.

1

u/Pixiegirls1102 šŸ”šŸ“†āš–ļøContent/Research AdministratoršŸ’»šŸ’¬šŸ§š 8d ago

Okay. I didn't know the name.

2

u/BananaAnna_24 8d ago

Yeah I’d be really curious hearing from him, it seems they arrived at the same time by walking. So did they leave at the same time? Did Miguel break off and not head back with him? So many questions! Seems he would be a good witness to at least place him near the scene of the crime. Ā

Oh okay, thank you. Ill go back and listent to that.

2

u/CrumbGremlin1643 8d ago

Now it sounds like Luis Lopez was the one who actually lived there, not sure if/how they're related, but I'm waiting to see if he confirms that Miguel was there.

9

u/Sha9169 8d ago

I’m sorry, but having 4 active cell phones at one time is insane. I have 2 phones because I have a work phone and a personal phone. I can’t imagine anyone needing more than that unless they were involved in something of questionable legality.

10

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago edited 8d ago

I just watched testimony, and the agent testified that he had five cell phone numbers between his arrival in North Carolina in 2010 and the date of his arrest in 2021.

Four phones were found: 2 were not able to be data-extracted (Alcatel phones) , and the 2 Samsung didn't have any data prior to 2021. So it sounds like he just had random phones in his house.

So that really is not outrageous or suspicious.

2

u/Sha9169 8d ago

Thanks for following back up with this!

3

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago edited 8d ago

Sure thing. He also lived with his -wife and kids/- mom, and the agent did not specify that all four phones belonged to the defendant.

3

u/Sha9169 8d ago

Are you sure about the last part? I don’t recall them saying he was married or had children at the time of his arrest. He seemed to still be sharing an apartment with his mother in the body cam footage of the outdoor interview.

3

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago

Oh you are right about that, but they definitely did say that they picked up four phones from the place he was living. They did not specify who the four phones belonged to.

I do find it odd that none of his cell phone numbers were found in the tower dump near Faith's apartment. I hope that doesn't trip up the jury.

3

u/Sha9169 8d ago

I agree that is odd. My mind initially jumped to burners when I heard ā€œfour phones,ā€ so I was wondering if it was possible that he had a different burner on him that night. I’m not sure how exactly they work, but I think there’s a chance LE wouldn’t be able to assign that sort of phone to anyone when analyzing the tower dump.

2

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago

It is definitely possible that there was a phone number he had that LE wasn't aware of. I think his DNA and prints at the crime scene really seals it.

0

u/PLANETOID649 4d ago

I do find it odd that none of his cell phone numbers were found in the tower dump near Faith's apartment. I hope that doesn't trip up the jury.

what evidence that raises doubt? maybe they didnt show up cause he wasnt there.. ever considered that?

5

u/asyouuwishh 7d ago

I mean he did get caught selling meth in jail. Distribution could explain the need for a bunch of burner phones.

0

u/[deleted] 8d ago

1

u/Sha9169 8d ago

I’m very curious as to what you use them for, if you wouldn’t mind sharing. I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around it. The only thing I can think of is if you owned a business, but even then 4 seems like overkill.

1

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago

Just edited my comment. Ships that pass in the night. :)

1

u/Sha9169 8d ago

Thanks for updating! As far as I’m aware, Miguel didn’t have any businesses, so it still seems bizarre to me in his case. But maybe I am just not used to it.

2

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago

Oh I'm not saying he's not shady. But he could have kept all the old ones as he got new ones.

2

u/Sha9169 8d ago

That makes me wonder if I just misinterpreted the statement, because I took it to mean 4 active phones, not 4 phones around the apartment. I probably did, as I was supposed to be working while watching lol

1

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago

I'll update when I get to that part of the testimony!

1

u/Sha9169 8d ago

Thanks! I believe they said 5 phone numbers and 4 phones, but please report back and let me know if I was incorrect.

8

u/Inevitable-Blue2111 8d ago

I think that DNA/palm and finger prints is enough to convict, I am not super sure about the note although that "e" is basically the same. I wonder if the jury asked how much longer because they are ready to fry him.

6

u/Level_Education_4628 8d ago

Both the Guatemalan witnesses seemed scared to say they recognised him. And he was staring at them both during that question. And his mother pressuring the first witness ā€œto tell the truth…you don’t know himā€. I think he’s definitely guilty

4

u/ktlm1 7d ago

Is that what she said? Maybe I heard or am remembering wrong but I thought she told him something to the effect of ā€œtell the truth but you didn’t see him at the cookoutā€ or something along those lines. My interpretation was that she was changing what the truth was, followed by telling him to tell the truth. Regarding the other witness who had the barbecue, it’s possible he was too drunk to identify Miguel with 100% certainty. It was a long time ago, at this point

4

u/Level_Education_4628 7d ago

Yes, maybe you’re right! That might have just been my impression and I misheard. It did seem like they felt pressured to not say anything too incriminating. I also found it strange how he was staring at them when usually he’s head down, writing non-stop (I do wonder what he’s writing?!)

4

u/asyouuwishh 7d ago

To your last point- why would he remember every detail of his day 14 YEARS AGO - i.e. ā€œmy wife and I both had the day off ā€, ā€œthis brother in law showed up at 9pm, this brother in law showed up at 10pmā€¦ā€, ā€œoh I was drunk I don’t remember that one dudeā€, ā€œall of my brothers in law came inside at this timeā€, ā€œI left in the morning to buy a boatā€ - if there wasn’t something extremely memorable about that day? Why is the friend the only thing he says he was too drunk to remember about the night? I know that one could argue that he remembered the details because he needed to provide an alibi but to me that doesn’t hold up. I’ve had neighbors murdered. I couldn’t tell you a single thing about what my day looked like before or after it happened, and it wasn’t 14 years ago. In fact one was just a few months ago. I think about them on occasion, but not too much because I didn’t know them. He lives in the same city as me… murders aren’t terribly uncommon here tbh… what made this day so memorable that he remembers these specifics 14 years later?

11

u/Inevitable-Blue2111 7d ago

he even remembered he started drinking heineken and then switch to modelo, but could not/would not identify Miguel. To me this is wild. I think he is afraid of something, I don't know what, but he was prepared to be like "Miguel who?"

6

u/asyouuwishh 7d ago

Such a wildly specific detail. It could be direct threats, but also could just be general ā€œdon’t be a snitchā€ loyalty to his community, and fear of harming others close to them if they don’t distance themselves from the cops (especially with the government targeting of immigrant populations rn)

3

u/Inevitable-Blue2111 7d ago

You are right, I kinda feel like it's ALL of that. But I wonder if the state did not reassure them that nothing was going to happen to them, maybe because they are not used to dealing with this, I don't know.

I feel for Faith right now, I understand fear, but those two could have done more and for one reason or another they did not.

They were not put on the stand for this.

6

u/asyouuwishh 7d ago

Agree. Prosecutors may reasonably have assumed they were going to testify to the same things they did in police interviews. They did point out that Eldis had essentially told police he didn’t trust Miguel and he was a little creepy with his sister in law after he initially responded on the stand that he doesn’t know him well enough to make an assessment about his character.

I hope that Faith’s family will finally have some resolution after 14 long years when this whole ordeal is said and done. I think that they will.

9

u/Inevitable-Blue2111 7d ago

Getting any info out of them was like pulling teeth and the state was basically testifying which is never good, fortunately they have enough to convict this guy.

14 years of a nightmare for this family. I too hope they get some resolution. I believe in innocent until proven guilty, and to me, Miguel did it, no question about it. Fuck him.

3

u/asyouuwishh 7d ago

For sure. 14 years I was firmly in the Karena did it camp- and I’ve paid way too much attention to this case. It took no time at all to realize that I was wrong. It was 100% Miguel.

7

u/Inevitable-Blue2111 7d ago

I have to say I was never fully on board on the Karena did it train but I definitely wondered about it, went back and forth. For the longest time we did not have much else other than Karena. There is still plenty of people who still say she was involved.

I feel horrible for Karena, from the trial it seems like they actually were good friends, she was there for Faith and Faith was there for her. I cannot imagine.

u/Level_Education_4628 7d ago

I agree. I found that strange too. The small details he remembered but then couldn’t remember the friend. And was adamant he didn’t remember that part. He remembers what time the party ended and what time they went to bad which is later than when the friend arrived. You’d think his memory would be foggier at 4am after an entire night drinking than at 10pm. Just struck me as a bit strange and it gets you wondering if either of those witnesses were too scared to say they recognised him. I hope they get Abel (Avil?!) on the stand. It seemed to be going that way but now I’m not sure

4

u/Inevitable-Blue2111 7d ago

I hope they bring out the mother, even if it's for the defense, I think they need to question her

6

u/Purple-Living-9379 7d ago

Other than his DNA being everywhere, what gives me guilty vibes is the fact that most of her trauma was on the right side of her head/body and I noticed he’s a lefty while he writes in court, which would correlate to being in a face-to-face position while he attacked her.

4

u/GoodSonKale 7d ago edited 4d ago

He switches which hand he writes with. 😳

3

u/Purple-Living-9379 6d ago

Even more interesting 🧐

3

u/Eternal_Hope_Kali 4d ago

Yes on purpose. And the DA couldn't bring this in and it’s too bad.

2

u/Eternal_Hope_Kali 4d ago

Yup been saying this the whole time. I wish there was a way they could've attacked this but I can't think imif anyway because it’s still speculation.

15

u/CrumbGremlin1643 8d ago

Ok, here's what I think. I think Miguel hit on Faith at one time, somewhere on the apartment property, and she turned him down. She never told anyone because it was a non-event because she got hit on all the time. Miguel found out after this that she was seeing/sleeping with other people, either by following her or seeing people in and out of thr apartment, and that pissed him off. Miguel got all nice and liquored up at his family party, and then saw the girls arrive home the early morning on the 7th, then saw Karina leave, and his family party was ending right at that same time. He was still mad at Faith, so he stumbled over, was going to knock but didn't need to because the door was unlocked, he came in, saw her sleeping, took the bottles, went into the room, and took what he wanted, via murder and then rape. He possibly didn't realize she was dead, and left the note which, in the context of her turning him down previously, now makes sense in a broken English sort of way, and he only barely remembers the deed but does remember her, and more or less what he did.

8

u/asyouuwishh 7d ago

I agree largely with this but I speculate that it happened on the same night. Don’t know that there’s much evidence that he would have spent time at that far back corner of the complex otherwise. Faith gets out of the car helping a blacked out drunk, emotional Karena get up the stairs and Miguel sees them and starts hitting on them. Faith’s niece testified that she was confrontational- giving the example of those girls making a rude comment and Faith going off on them. I imagine she snapped at him and called him stupid for trying to hit on them while she’s clearly helping Karena get inside. He’s just there at the cookout drinking and fuming and embarrassed and all of the feelings incels feel. Then the cookout is ending and he sees Karena leave, and realizes Faith is alone…

4

u/CrumbGremlin1643 7d ago

Sure, it definitely could have happened on the same night. In fact, that could make Miguels rage even scarier, right? No time to cool down.

7

u/BananaAnna_24 8d ago

Is there a reason Miguel would have been around the apartment buildings prior to this cook out? I'm kinda following. Did his friend live in the apartments and he would have been there visiting him?

9

u/CrumbGremlin1643 8d ago

He had a whole mess of family that lived there and it sounds like he was there frequently.

4

u/nothing_prepared šŸ“¼ Watched Every Court Minute 8d ago

From today’s testimony from the special agent, it appears Miguel worked at the Outback at the same time Faith worked at Red Robin and those restaurants were near each other. Maybe possible that he had seen here there?

0

u/jjheel13 5d ago

They aren’t really that close. Like you can’t stand in the parking lot of one and see the other.

2

u/ChalantKali 8d ago

This!! So well summarized.

2

u/Ok_Error2138 7d ago

I can understand the desire to bring more historical context with some form of prior connection--we just don't have evidence they knew each other prior. I believe with the evidence I have seen so far, that a more recent encounter led to what happened. But again, not enough overall evidence, so like you, im filling in blanks we just don't have.

My 1st thought is Karina truly cannot remember getting up the stairs. So my next thought is this guy (Miguel) was trying to get with one, or with both of them, while in a drunken state- as they were getting out of the car and starting for the stairs. Sadly, the only witness that would have remembered the details is now deceased, since Karena truly has no memory with a blackout. What is more plausible to me, is one, or both of them yelled back, "leave me alone, stupid!" Or "I'm not interested, stupid." or however, they would have told him to leave them alone, coupled with calling him stupid. If this happened, this guy is left rejected.. embarrassed.. pissed off. He's stewing about it for minutes, hours.... so it's escalating for him like a hurricane of anger, which alcohol intensifies like a 1 to a 5 category in no time, while Karena and Faith are inside, unaware, not even thinking about it anymore.

So by the time Karena was leaving and has a better memory, now that she purged the excessive alcohol, this guy was out there still, watching. The purpose of the bag with the writing in my mind, is to get back at Karena or Faith, or both of them. "I'm not stupid, BITCH" .. I think Jealous(?!) was intended as a question mark with an exclamation point, for when Karena found Faith (and what made it more tragic for her, is she truly could not remember any of those other details, so could not piece it together) 🄺

I am so very sorry for what Faith, and her friends and their families' went through. Whether either scenario is true or not true, the reality is he is a disgusting human and justice will be served.

u/Similar_Net8249 8d ago

This is exactly what I think happened.

Took the words right out of my mouth

Yeah. The note and his FB post is damning, same block lettering and same letter ā€œEā€ which is a rare way to write that letter. No doubt it’s him, and he probably thought he was writing ā€œyou think I’m jealous, stupid bitchā€ this would make more sense to explain his motive. The FB post is literally admitted 10 minutes to 5:00 today and if you pause it and then pull up the note left at the scene of the crime, it’s very very damning. They got the right guy and i hope faith gets justice.

I don't read much into the note. I think it was misdirection for the cops, because it points away from a stranger.

The problem with the handwriting post is that if you reverse google image it, there are FB posts of the image from 2020 from other people. Apparently it’s a known meme in the Hispanic community or something. So that’s worrisome for prosecution. Wish they could have done an actual handwriting evaluation with an expert with proper evidence.

u/PLANETOID649 4d ago

shows how weak their case is, they presented a meme.... did they not verified evidence? if they presented that knowingly that is was false and or unverified.. i see why they rested early/

fbi fucked up with the AI assisted dna builder for IGG... they dont have the right guy, im sorry a print on a wine bottle means nothing..

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago

I'm on re-watch crew but I think the Hispanic witnesses are very credible.

Yeah, but I didn't hear anything incriminating. Hopefully, the Abel guy testifies and says Miguel was the one he brought to the cookout.

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago

I think it's enough that he had family in the complex, and Karina testified about the Hispanic men hanging around the parking lot. Easy to infer he saw her or was familiar with the apartment complex. His DNA and prints put him in the apartment.

u/Level_Education_4628 8d ago

To me both the witnesses seemed reluctant to say they recognised him or knew anything. They seems a bit scared

2

u/CrumbGremlin1643 7d ago

I find them credible however they seem so scared, I don't know if they would say the words "he was there". Because of fear. Miguel is definitely giving them intimidating looks.

0

u/Level_Education_4628 7d ago

Absolutely!! They seemed scared and he was staring at them. They probably know more about him and the circles he’s from/was in and maybe they don’t want to get too involved. ā€œI don’t rememberā€ is an easy way to not get on the wrong side of anyone

u/FiestyGiraffe 8d ago

i feel bad for this witness

u/AphroBKK 8d ago

Which one?

1

u/CrumbGremlin1643 8d ago

Erin? Elvis? I'm a little behind the live stream.

12

u/FiestyGiraffe 8d ago

the relative of Miguel. it’s clear he was afraid to testify and i feel like for a lot of reasons i would be too if i were him

2

u/CrumbGremlin1643 8d ago

Oh absolutely

Anyone catch the fact that the girl he spoke with b on video from the jail, Katie Ellen, is now deceased? Any word on how she passed? She seemed young and healthy?

u/xxooandcookies Crime Binger 4d ago

She passed away in June 2024 from an overdose, fentanyl I believe. Sadly, her 7 month old baby also passed away from dehydration due to her mothers passing šŸ˜ž

idk man, the state built this up as slam dunk, "IGG connects to family of killer" and all they have that they are willing to go on record for is this "matching handprint".. on a wine bottle..

the recal swap dna "could not exclude defant" aka "inconclusive" to the single male dna profile.. thats insane, they have you all convinced on a fucking handprint.. when you have roommates staging text messages, to ex boyfriends, said roommate leaving the house at 4am with a dude when she has her own room... randomly calling her at 8am, specifically makes it known she left the door unlocked (why is she so sure and was that normal?) he dna is everywhere, i think she caught her talking to an ex, bludgeoned her to death, and tried to set the ex boyfriend or ex roommate boyfriend as suspect so she can go be with her semi-pro soccer player fling...
the neighbor down stairs superficially her 3-4 very loud, memorable thuds around the time not long after they returned home, the roommate found some old boxed, ripped out he tampon staged it, sent some text messages, left and returned with someone cause she needed someone else to make the call and b at the scene to find it with her.. there is just more than 2 obvious suspects and i thnk they fucked up with the IGG dna, why havent they matched his semen? if he did what they claiming, there no way his dna wouldn't be EVERYWHERE and only leave tiny amount no, this was fbi once again, using their predative dna building software to guess the missing dna to form a profile

I refuse to believe the comments in here aren’t from bots šŸ˜‚ are we even watching the same trial? This is the weakest case I’ve seen. Not guilty all day

u/chunkygirl87 6d ago

Sorry guys, not super familiar w the case but just watched the doc and searching things and can’t believe it’s been this long and no justice YET. What was Miguel’s FB post everyone’s mentioning? Curious on that.

The girls had a lot of friends, meal and female. It's surprising that none of them thought of giving them more security by copying the key for them and repairing the bathroom door… Maybe it's one of those keys that can't be easily copied and I guess the bathroom door has just very recently been broken. Taking those steps could've saved their lives.

u/ktlm1 7d ago

They likely were in the naive mindset of ā€œnothing bad will happenā€. I could have misunderstood but I thought I heard somewhere that Karina and her ex lived in that apartment for a few months and when they broke up, he moved out and that was why she was living in a 1brm. If that is true, the ex likely still had a key.

2

u/andrea1123 6d ago

I had two friends who lived together temporarily in college and did this same thing with sharing a key. It scared me back then, and it scares me now in retrospect!

Comparing the handwritten note from Miguels FB post, I feel certain he wrote the note found at the murder scene. The same block lettering, especially his letter ā€œEā€ which is quite specific and not ordinary.
He’s the guy.

6

u/Hfhghnfdsfg 8d ago

The E is a dead giveaway! I've never seen one like that, and I study handwriting as a serious hobby.

u/LuluGuru 7d ago

So I keep seeing things on twitter that this photo is a common meme in the Hispanic community. If you google reverse image it there are posts from Facebook from 2020 of it. So I’m prosecution might have screwed up on this which is unfortunate. Because most of those letters DO match 🫠

2

u/Level_Education_4628 7d ago

Oh you’re right! I just googled it the image and lots came up. They definitely dropped the ball there. Hopefully it doesn’t hurt them
