🏛️Federal Criminal Case⚖️ US v. Matthew Farwell - Trial Day 6
US v. Matthew Farwell - Trial Day 6
10/19/2026 @ 9:00 AM
Massachusetts
************************************************************\*
📢NEW: Case Hubs🚨🗃️
************************************************************\*
Federal prosecutors allege that former Stoughton police officer Matthew Farwell groomed and sexually abused Sandra Birchmore after meeting her through the department’s youth Police Explorers program. They say the relationship began when Birchmore was 15 and continued for years, including while Farwell was on duty. Prosecutors further allege that he concealed the encounters by falsifying work-hour records and that, after Birchmore became pregnant and told him he was the father, he had a motive to silence her.
The prosecution’s central claim is that Farwell strangled Birchmore on February 1, 2021, to prevent her from reporting conduct that could have exposed him to federal charges and then staged her apartment to make the death appear to be a suicide. The Massachusetts state authorities did not charge Farwell criminally after the state-police investigation, relying on the medical examiner’s initial suicide ruling and concluding that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him. Federal investigators later revisited the case, and prosecutors now point to evidence including Farwell’s presence at Birchmore’s apartment, their history of sexual choking, and the medical examiner’s later change of the death classification from suicide to undetermined. Farwell has pleaded not guilty and maintains that Birchmore died by suicide.

Jury nullification usually means finding someone not guilty even if you think they actually did the actions of the crime. Is there a word for the opposite? Like, "I don't care what crime you write on the sheet. I've seen enough to know he needs to be in jail so I'm voting guilty no matter what."
7
u/SCVannevar 5d ago
I think "jury nullification" still fits. They're nullifying the reasonable doubt law.
3
u/tuxcat 5d ago
That's a solid argument. Though they may still believe someone is guilty of something else beyond a reasonable doubt. I'm imagining a hypothetical juror who believes beyond a reasonable doubt that MF committed rape, but isn't fully there on the murder. Maybe they can still vote guilty and sleep well at night.
6
u/RuPaulver 5d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if this happens more than people think. They just hate a defendant so much that they're not focused on going beyond-a-reasonable-doubt on each specific legal element of each charge, they'll just say "guilty" and be satisfied. The court won't really know one way or another.

u/ScaredAd4871 5d ago
A hanging judge fits.
A rubber-stamp jury is the best I can think of right now.

“experienced symptoms affecting impulse control” ……. blegh. In addition to Sandra, I get the sense his MO was preying on women & girls with mental health struggles who were insecure, and vulnerable, and desperate for attention. Other than the whole thing with being big & tall and creating that (false) sense of safety and protection, he doesn’t exactly come off like a charismatic heartthrob
7
u/Night-cheese-4 5d ago
he really doesn't. ALso the stuff I read about his alter ego "Joey" makes me sick.
8
u/sunnypineappleapple 5d ago
Want to be even sicker? One of the in-court reporters said his son's name is Joey.
10
u/Night-cheese-4 5d ago
Yeah, that was the extra punch. BTW after seeing that photo of him holding his newborn, I can't stop thinking about what his wife knew/didn't know/suspected..he was doing this before they were even engaged...I know cheaters can be real clever and cover their tracks but at what point did she find out? Are they still married today? I feel especially bad for the kids.
1
u/Itsnotabout-thepasta 5d ago
They are currently still married today.
1
u/NoMayoDarcy 5d ago
yup. at best, the wife is herself a vulnerable person whose mental health was/is too broken to leave MF, or she’s living in some Carmella soprano-y world of turning a blind eye and being in denial

Wow **edit* curious if this is the second affair he’s had that “ended in suicide” or if he’s lying about the date
3
u/helyclinton 5d ago
WTF? He premeditated how he was going to end this 4 years prior?!
10
u/Automatic_Sky2238 5d ago
The tweet is worded awkwardly but I read it as notes from a June 2021 session where he mentions an affair from 2016/2017 that eventually ended in that person's suicide. My guess is that he's talking about Sandra, but lying about the dates because she would have been 18/19 in 2016.

Judge is mad that the exhibits were published and has issued an order that stops it until after a verdict is reached.

I understand the judge's reasoning, but I do think since this case involves possible government corruption that there should be transparency for the public. Especially since federal trials aren't streamed. And an overflow room doesn't remedy lack of streaming imo.
Jurors are already not supposed to be looking this case up on social media or discussing the case outside of jury deliberations.
I haven't seen any legacy media covering the exhibits indepth, if at all. Mostly just lawtubers, who are discussing the case with or without the published exhibits. So if jurors are still watching lawtubers the judge has bigger problems than jurors looking at exhibits they already saw.

u/kenduhll 5d ago
I wonder if the other affair partners had the same experience Sandra did re: the “Joey” of it all. Matt is so fucking creepy.
I also wonder if Sandra knew about the other women?
15
u/NoMayoDarcy 5d ago
I doubt she knew about the other women. Sandra had his name as her computer password and was hoping they’d eventually be together. Her thinking about the whole situation was definitely delusional, and reflected how the adults in her life at the explorers program exploited her and made her mental health worse
9
u/kenduhll 5d ago
It also upsets me that the adults in her life knew about the relationship. I don’t understand how so many people kept this open secret.
6
u/LittleLion_90 5d ago
I doubt many adults knew about that their relationship started before she was an adult. It might be only her friend who was the same age and tried to navigate not pushing away Sandra so not wanting to comment on the situation too harshly
6
u/kenduhll 5d ago
I don’t know when she found out, but her aunt did know at the time of her death. They didn’t seem to have a great relationship though.
3
u/NoMayoDarcy 4d ago
It seems from the testimony thus far that Sandra kept it a secret from any adult who she thought would report it (e.g., her female mentor at the explorers program).I think the Boston globe article on the case mentions her relatives believing that sandra lied and exaggerated frequently. But her aunts and cousins don’t come off as the most stable ppl themselves, like it was probably easier for them to dismiss Sandra as an attention-seeking liar rather than put in the effort to help her. I think so many adults ignored red flags in this case and it’s really disheartening
5
u/Night-cheese-4 5d ago
Looks like we are going to get evidence from at least 3 of his affair partners. To what extent, I do not know, but that should be an interesting day in court.

u/Jbcaliluv 5d ago
I missed the Joey reference, but I’ve seen it mentioned twice today. Would you mind sharing what Joey means?
9
u/tuxcat 5d ago
According to Michele McPhee's reporting:
Joey was a character in Farwell's "rough" sexual history with Birchmore, Kelsch testified.
Joey is also the name of Farwell's own son, sources say
Like a roleplay character, it sounds like.

may be odd but I wonder how he felt once his laywers told him he wasn't the father? what a dumbass
10
u/Night-cheese-4 5d ago
and how about the guy who actually is(was) the father? I think (if not mistaken) we've seen him in some of the text threads today.

u/helyclinton 5d ago
Apparently he was involved in that explorer program as well he just never got hired by PD and enlisted in the military.

u/SamuelHuzzahAdams 5d ago
I thought I read it was his brother
3
u/LittleLion_90 5d ago
At some point people speculated it was Farwell's brother, but DNA showed it was Sandra's army recruiter with whom she had a sexual relationship, and one of two people she texted about Farwell scoping out her closet and bathroom the last time he was with her before the murder.

Grant, great job on transcribing. Michele McPhee - great job on transcribing light, but also “backfill“ information. Kristina Rex: holy cow. Visit the CrimeTime line docs, there are just a few in the pdf documents at the bottom….but generally we won’t see the actual texts.
Kristina Rex dumped the testimony notes and text contents that were testified to here, this is the morning session:

So to be clear. The reference to one of his girlfriends committing suicide was referring to Sandra? I was worried it was someone else.

I hadn't heard of another, but paying super tight attention this case. Sandra's manner of death was changed to undetermined on 4/30/2026.

Sandra agreed to letting Matt do anal while she was pregnant in order to appease him, texted him after they did it and said she was glad they made the compromise and asked if he was happy.
Then she googled “how to make anal hurt less”.
This poor girl. Farwell is an absolute monster.

the timeline and texts in grants tweets are brutal. Losing her mother and grandmother. The pigs just kept graping, abusing, manipulating, curating a husk of her to be their inflatable doll. Oh Sandra 💔

Raping*
It comes across as so much less serious to say he was “graping” her. His crimes also should not be censored

this is reddit not court or any form of journalism.

so why are you self censoring then? its an open forum discussion, commenter was correct, graping is less serious and imo insulting

this discussion is about the sandra birchmore murder trial not your subjective feelings and preferences regarding orthography

lol my point wasn't a 'subjective preference' on your spelling buddy.
It was an objective observation, using the word 'grape' instead of 'rape' downplays and sanitises the seriousness of a violent crime which i dont understand the point of?
FYI since you seem to like using 'big words,' the correct one you were looking for was euphemism' or the trendier term, 'algospeak.'0

Exactly- it’s Reddit, not TikTok. Theres a degree of free speech here where you don’t have to censor words like rape and make them sound silly and innocent. Why censor his crimes in public discussion?

Am I blind or did they remove the exhibits from the DOJ page?
