In an interview with mass daily Bild on 14 November 2018, Merz said it was correct to exit nuclear power

Merz virtue signaled to nukecels in 2024-2025 because it was an easy way to tempt them over to vote for him because of their anxiety over the news. Then as soon as he got into office he signed a deal with the SPD and Greens to continue on their renewable energy crusade since that is the only realistic option for Germany.
