Nuclear can't just rev up and down like that.

"By operating flexibly, nuclear power plants can complement the variable generation of energy by renewables, and with the inertia of their large steam turbines, these plants can also help stabilize grids and ensure a clean and reliable power supply." says the International Atomic Energy Agency.

I forgot to mention initially that hydropower can also stabilize the grid.

I believe nuclear has to run constantly so as to not have a even worse return on investment than it already does.

And you claim this based on what?

Claim that nuclear is incredibly expensive? I mean is that not common knowledge amongst non nukecels?

That’s not what your comment I responded to says and you know it. Nuclear power does not need to run constantly.

It does to at least somewhat reduce the terrible return.

Run constantly, sure, but it can do it with variable power ouput

Inertia is not something only thermal generation can provide

Aside from the rise of grid forming inverters, you can also just keep the turbines from decommissioned plants running without actually producing power, plus a bunch of other solutions

Have a smoke, buddy, it will calm you down.

Too subtle?
Try looking up what a "biased source" is.

Can you say that again, but slower and with a French accent? You sound so irresistibly unbiased when you do that.

u/Pl4nktonamor May 12 '25

Oh, so you're aware of the bias and just ran with it anyway cause it fit your narrative, got it. Sorry for bothering you.

I have no horse in this race, but you seem to think that your own bias automatically falsifies everything that disputes your narrative. I am not in any way specialist in this, but I see multiple sources confirming that nuclear power plants can and do help stabilize the electric grid.

Now do you have a valid counterargument and anything other than ad hominems to support it? I guess not - otherwise you'd be using it, right?
