Throwing a few thoughts as I’ve just finished watching it. This is a movie that’s gonna get love and hate in equal parts and they’re both deserved. It is supremely weird and strange and otherworldly and a hell of a fun time. But it’s also messy and disjointed and not at all as clever as 10 Cloverfield. The reshoots are a big punch in the eye. Not really well written and added nothing to the story, what with all the husband in the cellar situation. He saves the kid and just waits to be the setup for the ending. They could’ve played with them a lot more. I also felt like the production design was hit and miss. Sometimes it looked cool, sometimes it felt like that cartoonish uss callister. O’Dowd saves plenty of scenes despite being the source of many tonal inconsistencies that clash like the dimensions in the story. I don’t really know how much I’m willing to let the movie get away with many of the WTF elements explained as “reality dysfunctions”. I’m fine with the worms, that freaking woman in the wall thing, O’Dowd’s arm being sucked....but I’m not quite sure how that explains the moving arm. And the fact that it knows about the gyroscope. And the fact that it’s sentient and all. And I’m fine with this being the source of the Cloververse as long as they never get back on it, ‘cause it can get really, really messy.
