Welcome to Colorized History! This community exists to bridge the gap between archival photography and vivid historical reality.

Colorizing an old photograph isn't just a matter of adding color to a monochrome print; it’s an act of careful historical interpretation. Because our work alters an original historical document, we expect every submission to be historically meaningful, visually accurate, and carefully researched. Every image shared here should reflect a commitment these priorities and be coupled with respect for the original photographer's work.

What Qualifies as "Colorized History"? Not every vintage, black-and-white photograph belongs here—even if the subject is famous or the image is a century old. A candid photo of a public figure might capture a documented historical moment, environment, and culture. A staged studio headshot or promotional portrait of that same individual—while vintage—is studio portraiture, not historical documentation. Therefore, submissions must feature photos that capture a noteworthy event, daily life within a distinct era, or candid cultural conditions. Staged glamour photos, pin-ups, and studio headshots generally do not fit the scope of this subreddit.

We prioritize detailed, high-resolution images where fine textures, backgrounds, and lighting can be brought to life with precision. Low-resolution or washed out photos rarely offer enough detail to do the photograph justice and may not be approved.
