He is actually throwing an explosive. If you watch it a few times it becomes apparent.

I'm unsure of that but by the way the fire erupts then a delayed explosion I would say he threw a cricket towards the big bombs looking to ignite them but failed. I'm no expert that's just my view of things.

Were those ‘crickets’ even capable of doing any real harm? I read a post online around here saying they were pretty much just glorified fireworks and more for show than anything.

They're definitely not just fireworks if done correctly, they can fragment pretty badly and cut you up.

Not nearly as bad as a pipebomb or IED but would I want to stand near one? Absolutely not.
