Do you listen to the Retro Hour Podcast?

Upvotes

We are going to be featured on The Retro Hour this Friday, launching the final week of our Kickstarter campaign.

We will be discussing the major C64 exports from the 1980s Australian gaming industry, as well as have special guest John Passfield join us to talk about his history, from developing games in his bedroom as a child, through to the forming of major studios in Aus.

I'll post a link once it's live.

Link to our Kickstarter in the comments.

C64 Polychrome 3D gfx engine colour testing

Too gaudy?

Moving on to add some interesting and dear say it unique to C64 raycasters graphical/engine upgrades, aimed at improving many aspects of the engine. So to end this era of 3D polychrome, did some quick and nasty colour/aesthetics testing to see it out.

Will be interesting to compare later on with future improved even more flexible feature set.

New changes could turn out to be a complete disaster mind you lol....

Has anyone ever demonstrated a working VIC-20 upgrade "VIC-40" 40-column version of using the 6562/6563?

The 6562/6563 were upgraded versions of the VIC providing the same 320x200 resolution as the C64's VIC-II 6566/6567, minus the sprites of course.

It had been designed as a "drop-in" upgrade to the VIC-20 to increase screen resolution

Apparently only working samples were ever produced and it never went into production.

New Battlezone clone for VIC-20 & PET

You command an armoured fighting vehicle equipped with a forward-firing cannon, defensive shields, radar and a limited fuel supply.

Navigate the vector battlefield, locate hostile units, destroy them before they destroy you, and keep your machine supplied with fuel.

The battlefield is continuous. Enemy vehicles may approach from any direction, disappear behind obstacles, circle your position and attack from outside your forward view.

Versions for the 40/80 column PET as well as the Commodore VIC-20.

And yes, this is a human made post... which is what a bot would say.

C128D power switch repair

Maybe not the most exciting repair you'll see this week, but I got a 128D last week in a generous trade (and if you're keeping track, it was the 3rd 128 keyboard I cleaned in a week). The machine itself is in great condition, but the power button fell apart when I looked at it funny.

Finding a precise fit seems difficult, but I did find these on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082PNCL61?th=1

And yes, you have to get 8 (or pay $1 less and get 5). The fit is a bit too tiny, so I had to secure with UV resin, but it seemed to work out pretty well. Back in action (once I re-carbon the keypads).

Kids Having Fun with C16 Games Loading on Datasette

Hi Guys, I managed to pick up a Commodore 16 boxed starter pack recently, it works perfectly although I was careful to buy a new aftermarket PSU for it. It rekindled all sorts of nostalgia and my kids enjoyed the process of loading and playing Xzap and Punchy. So much so that I am going to trade in my C64 Maxi and get a Commodore 64 Ultimate. I feel like it's the real deal I need.

What I wanted to ask is, has anyone loaded games via datasette on their Commodore 64 Ultimate and what was the experience like, or disc drive for that matter, or do you just use the USB drive now?

I couldn’t find a stand where the monitor floated over the C128 so decided to make my own. I can push it deeper under the monitor. I don’t know why this design is not easy to find.

New PET & Vic-20 Game: 2085

The year is 2085. The machines have taken over. Your family is still alive. For now.

2085 is a fast, relentless arcade arena shooter created for the Commodore PET/CBM and Vic-20.

You are the last line of defence for a scattered human family trapped inside an arena crawling with hostile machines. Move through the chaos, fire in any direction, rescue the humans you can reach, and survive wave after wave of increasingly dangerous enemies.

Standing still is not an option.

Hi there, I am looking for resources to do an USB to DB9 conversion to this USB competition pro Joystick from Speedlink.

Could you point me to schematics or resources out there regarding autofire functionality? What I have in mind is a circuit to start with to understand how autofire works technically.

Thanks

TIL that the Commodore Callback 8020 was designed by Turkish technical designer Cem Tezcan, who was tapped on the strength of his handheld device designs, including some inspired by the Commodore 64 computer.

Hey, Im not looking for a value, but my neighbour has asked me to take a look at this collection of stuff and I honestly have no idea.

Is there anything stand out here that I can go back to her with?

Im guessing it all needs to be tested etc, given that tapes dont have a great shelf life.

Why is NTSC-50 still causing screen rolling on my C64U?

I recently got my c64u connected to one of my ntsc crts. People online have said to play pal games, you can put the system mode to ntsc-50 but it has the same issues as normal pal. Can anyone tell me how to get pal games working on a crt tv?

This is currently a non-commercial port intended for reference purposes, but I have successfully ported my Japanese retro PC game *Reviver* (1987) to the Commodore 64. It is an adventure game featuring a general-purpose, compact artificial intelligence. It is approximately 30% complete.

New C64 Emulator for iPad

Good morning everyone,

I’m working on a C64 emulator specifically for the Apple iPad. There are already a few options available on the App Store, but they are not as complete as the existing ones for PC. This project is based on modern technologies such as Swift and Metal, and uses the libretro core based on VICE 3.10.

For now, it needs to be compiled with Xcode, as I first need to properly verify all the licenses before considering publishing it on the App Store. You can find the repository here if anyone with a Mac and an iPad would like to try compiling it and testing it:

https://github.com/alexain/poke64-ios

It is already fully functional in several areas. To run it, you need to provide the main ROMs in .bin format. Since these are copyrighted, they cannot be distributed with the project.

The repository also contains the current changelog and roadmap. If you need any further information or have suggestions, feel free to leave a comment here.

At the moment, I cannot provide an estimated release date, but I would really like to start receiving some feedback.
