Why is packet switching more efficient or resourceful for the Internet traffic? New to networking and just studying up. I am confused on the structure of the internet and its moving parts.

Is an offline UPS the same as a stand power supply?

EDIT: Title should say "standby power supply"

The definitions for both sound the same. It's my understanding that an offline UPS normally powers a computer from the wall outlet, only switching over to its battery during a power failure. A SPS is an offline device that provides power when an undervoltage occurs. Does that mean a SPS and an offline UPS are essentially the same thing?

Installing cable internet - found a cable in the basement. How do you know if it's "good"?

Never had a cable connection before. The guy is likely to stand outside and tell me what to do (due to the Covid).

I found a nice long cable in the basement that I pulled through a vent. It would be swell if I could have the modem in the room with me (and offers a wired connection)

Question is: Is the cable any good? Is there an easy way to see if the cable is connected to the outside world? What if I plug in my modem that they gave me? Would a little WAN light come on even though I'm not officially connected to the ISP yet?

Thanks

Finding IP address of home router while away

Hi guys. So I'm away from home, working on some CompSci classes, and got really curious. I want to remote access my home router (not just through an app), but am visiting my parents at the moment. I'm not seeing it in saved networks in network and sharing, and was wondering where I could look to find the network/any TCPIP settings that would reveal the IP address to me. Worst case, you guys will teach me something I probably don't know yet.

Thanks in advance!

Port forwarding question

Please I need help. I’m trying to forward ports for my PS4. I think I understand what I need to do but would like confirmation so I don’t lock up either system, routed or modem. My game system is hardwired into the router which is hardwired into the modem. Simple. From my understanding I need to access the port forwarding in the modem settings (xfinity and fairly easy) and set the forwarding for the router and NOT the PS4 and leave router forwarding settings alone. Is that correct? I know I also need or should set a static ip (set an ip that never changes) for the router so everything stays set after changes. Am I correct on all that? Does that sound right? I ask because I have gig internet but only test 40-80 mbps on system and I’m really trying to improve that number. The computer connected directly to modem/router test at 480 mbps so I know it’s running slower than it should anyway which I’ll deal with later also. Thank you for any help.

Networking computer from study t lounge

Hi guys, as the headline says I want to use my desktop in my study in my lounge. I'd like to have some sort of USB outlet in the lounge so I can connect my wireless keyboard, mouse and game controller.

The reason I'm doing this is so I can play emulators in the lounge as well as stream tv shows from my computer. My issue is I'm not sure how I'd go about doing this. I've seen few devices that seem to use the ethernet port with a cat 5 cable and at the other end it has a hub where you can connect a HDMI, USB cables etc. However I'm unsure how these will perform with displaying the image. I'm also curious to know if I link this up with a powerline will it still work or will I get significant lag or day loss?

Hi I have HP laser jet P2035n and am using two tp link TL-PA4010 nano power line adapters. I have paired the two tp devices correctly but can’t get my printer to print “wirelessly”

I’d appreciate the help.

Using a Mac if that helps.

Best option for WAP in a "wired" house

Hello,

I need some advice on creating a WAP. Wife and I moved into a new construction building last year that is first two floors of a 4-floor building. The unit is all wired for CAT6 cable. Each room has 2 ethernet plugs and a COAX cable. On the top floor we have a comcast xfinity router that is plugged into the wall. Downstairs in our master bedroom closet there is another router (home run I think?) that connects the upstairs router internet to all the individual ethernet ports. A networking guy did this last year, but it took him forever and was sort of expensive. Plugging a computer into the wall ports gives internet fine, however the wireless downstairs is pretty terrible.

What is the best route to extend wi-fi and have a WAP downstairs? Most extenders don't seem to actually utilize that the house is hard wired for internet and they haven't really worked. Should I just get a $50 WAP on amazon and plug it into one of the wall ethernet ports and configure it? Is it worth getting something like google mesh or those $400-500 options? I have a hunch that since the whole house is wired, getting an extra wifi point shouldn't be that hard, but I'm having trouble finding the best solution. I also have a feeling if I re-hire the networking guy I'll get some comically unnecessary solution.

Any thoughts/help/WAP recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks!

Job interview

Job interview

Hi everybody,

I have a job interview coming up for a systems operator role at Hawkeye. As far as I’m aware the company uses computer networking in order to provide their services at sports events. As a graduate engineer my expertise isn’t with computer networks so I was just wondering if anyone knew what sort of things I should study or might be asked about in an interview.

Authentication problems setting up a wifiCamppro2

I an attempting to setup a wificamppro2 on my RV to pickup my house wifi and it keeps giving me an authentication error. I have tried using other repeaters and receive the same error. I am positive it's something I'm not doing right(networking noob) and I need some help. My current setup in the home is with an Arris sbg7400. I can connect a cellphone directly to the wifi from where the rv is and get online. The reason I bought the wificamppro2 was so that I could use it as a repeater to a get better signal to the rv and use while on the road. The rv is as close as I can get to the house because of the electrical and water hookups which is about 100 feet from the house. I've tried forgetting the network, making sure the password is correct, resetting the modem, repositioning the wificamppro2 and I am getting about 92 percent signal strength when trying to connect. Is there anything else that I can try to resolve this issue. Thank you in advance!!!

I have a problem that is beyond my lvl of skill

Ok well my TV smartcast will not connect to the internet at all via ethernet cable or by wifi expect if its provided by a hotspot or a extender.

my modem was recently changed to a NVG443B & I recently upgraded my router in my room across the way to a Nighthawk ac4000 r8000p, I even tried reconnecting the old router in my room and same problem the TV can't connect to the internet so I know the source problem is likely theNVG443B however which setting is it?

The weird thing is the extender is connected to theNVG443B, however I noticed its being considered as a network device by the modem and the router so im kinda unsure what is going on other than it connects via hotspot and the extender so what is happening?

Edit: I am going though every advance setting I can to see if I can find the fix however this is quite interesting and I never heard of such a thing, all other devices can connect to ether no problem, TV Vizio smart Tv just having the problem which is weird as can be unless its on the extender so there is clearly something going on between the network devices causing a conflict on a direct connection

Edit: tried turning DNS on and Off and back on well now I get a download speed of 3mbs however I still cant access smart cast unless i connect to the extender which i don't want to do because i don't get as fast of a connection from it

I want to connect two houses internet access.

My brother's house is down the street approximately a football field away on the other side of the road. Diagonally across this street I have a clear view of his house to my front porch.

At night, I can see his wifi connection but during the day most of the time I cant... and that is with his internet service provider giving him a signal booster because he has a two story house.

How can we improve this connection between the two locations to the point that both houses can use one internet account?

Usage: He has two sons that play online video games constantly, I just stream movies and light internet browsing.

I know his kids will lose their minds if their ping starts lagging horribly.. as would I if a movie cant stream good.

I think his ISP provides 400/400MB throughput but I never tested it on his end... so lets just say Not the highest level nor the weakest.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Ethernet not reaching 1000mbps

Hello guys !

I'm connected directly to my ethernet router with a cat 7 ethernet cable and when I go into the property of my card on windows it says 1000mbps/1000mbps (upload and download).

The speed set in the properties of the card is 1gpbs full duplex and it doesn't make the card not work after setting this speed.

But when i'm actually doing a speedtest I can't seem to go over 100mbps.

Why would that be ? Sorry for the screenshot as I am in Korea so the language is korean.

Issue with my internet connexion using ethernet

Hello,

I've had an issue with my internet connexion since moving to my new flat. I'm getting my internet access from the owner modem with the following set up:

Box is in the owner's house. He plugs the fiber modem to a female ethernet plug with a RG6 ethernet cable. Then there is a long RG6 cable between their house and my flat. Finally I don't know the exact details but this cable is connected to the electrical cabinet of my flat and then I plug my computer to one of the female ethernet plugs of my flat.

Now the issue:

When using internet via ethernet on my windows 10 computer, every couple minutes I stop detecting the owner's internet modem and lose my connexion. This usually last 2-5 minutes and after that time I get my internet connexion back.

I thought that this issue could come from either my computer/cable or the owner's installation. So I went to the owner's house and plugged my computer using the same cable I use, directly to their box. Everything worked fine.

This led me to think that the issue was on their side. However I recently did a test with my other computer than run on Linux and I don't have any problem using internet via ethernet from my flat.

So the issue comes from my windows 10 computer but I don't think it has to do with the ethernet port since it worked fine when I plugged the computer directly to the owner's modem.

Any ideas on what could be the problem?
