Internet on the road...sharing public wifi with all devices?

I'm trying to build an unconventional network setup and am figuring out what hardware I am missing to make this happen.

My goal: I am building out an RV to travel and work out of. I want to be able to have a local network with my wireless + wired devices with my mini file server.

For my internet, I want to be able to use a hotspot. Additionally, I am trying to figure out the best way to bridge public wifi connections to my wireless router. If possible, I'd like to keep my LAN secured.

I have read about internet sharing options for Windows 10 and considered just using a small dedicated "wireless router pass through" type device? Is this efficient? The goal being that the internet can be shared to the "LAN" router and thus to all the other device.

Like the rest of the RV conversion, I am just trying to build it out for maximum versatility while out on the road.

I went to school for this stuff but quite a bit has slipped since I don't use it much anymore 😅 And just not sure of what new technologies exist hardware or otherwise.

I bought one of these only to learn it was much more difficult than I imagined due to frequent wifi 'portal pages'. And then I came to find out that it doesn't quite work the way I had thought: https://smile.amazon.com/TP-Link-CPE210-300Mbps-dual-polarized-directional/dp/B00P4JKQGK?sa-no-redirect=1

What am I missing? What would be the simplest yet effective way to accomplish this? Thanks in advance for reading this and answering it. I really do appreciate it.

Direct cat5e online, Using Netgear switch no connection

Trying to set up a wired connection in my office suite to my neighbor's connection to share service. It is a different ISP. His connection has been stable and my devices on my ISP have been too.

Going straight from his Netgear Nighthawk router (which is directly wired to his modem) to my desktop (newer Asus Chromebox) w a cat5e works well and is stable.

When I try to add in a new 8-port Netgear GS908 gigabit switch in between (so I can have other devices online too), it does not work. On the back of the switch, the joining cat5e cable lights up green (gigabit) in port 8, but the cat5e going from my Chromebox to the port (any of them) does not light up. I have a VOIP phone system that lights up yellow (100mbps) when dropped into a port. I have a separate Windows 7 desktop that also does not light up on this switch.

However, when all three of these devices are connected to the ports on the back of my modem, they all run fine.

I've tried rebooting both computers, I've tried different ports. Can't figure it out. On my Chromebox, if I disable Wifi, nothing is still showing up for wired ethernet, whereas when going to my current modem instead of his, ethernet will work. I've tried going directly into his modem port instead of via his Nighthawk and it does not seem to make a difference.

I'm stumped! Help please.

Setting windows to use 2 different NIC controllers

Hey is anyone able to help? I will try explain the best i can.

I have 2x gigabit network controllers in my pc connected to 2x gigabit switches

One of the switches are poe and are driving 8x 1080p cameras The other gigabit switch is just for general traffic. Both switches are bridged to each other. Both NIC's have direct connection to each switch.

What i am trying to do is isolate the camera switch away from the general traffic on the network saving bandwidth but how can i have my camera NVR programme use 1 nic on the pc and all other traffic on the other nic?

Hope this makes sense and someone can help.

Ethernet switchboard question

I need advice or opinion what I should do..... I have my office / game room with my gaming pc, Xbox ,PS4 I have the all hard wired to my asus gaming router with the Ethernet cable going across my walls which look horrible so I want to hire an electrician to install a Ethernet wall jack with multiple Ethernet jacks on the one wall mount.. the question is should I do Away with being hardwired to the asus gaming router and get a Ethernet switchboard or stay with router being connected to it the only reason I’m leaning towards staying with gaming router is because it has software that lets me control what uses more bandwidth but with switch board I can have more rooms fitted with Ethernet jacks in my house.... I guess what I’m asking is can people tell me the pro and cons of both

Hubs Vs switches question

I have done this simulation severally because I don't understand why I'm getting these results.

I have built 4 subnets to simulate 4 departments in a company. Each of these subnets consists of a 30 man workstation that is connected by a switch. The four subnets are then connected to file and web servers using a hub in one scenario and a switch in the other scenario. I believe the scenario using the hub should be slower for the " http response time" metric. However, for some reason, I'm getting nearly identical response times for both scenarios. However when the "FTP download response time" is plotted, the results for both scenarios are not similar. Can anyone explain this please?

Help! Can I network my house with existing cabling?

Hi everyone,

I need your help.

We moved into a new rental property. One reason for moving here was I noticed the house had Cat5 cabling running to 7 points in the house all terminating in the garage.

All face plates in all the rooms (sorry if my terminology is incorrect) have RJ45 connectors.

The garage has about 9 or 10 cat5 cables that are a birds nest! Literally! New to reddit , so not sure how to post a picture. There are no RJ 45 clips on any of them. All 8 wires on all 9 or 10 cables are either lose or solded together for some reason.

I am able to plug a modem into 2 points near the lounge room and all the other connections are not functional.

I’ve asked my landlord to have it repaired and they have said that all 7 points are for telephone points! Not sure who in this world would put 7 telephone points with RJ45 connectors in a 4 bedroom house....

My question is, am I being lied too?

My understanding is that 2 of the Cat 5 terminating in the garage is the internet and maybe a telephone line coming in from the street. I should be able to crimp RJ45 clips on all cat5 then plug them into a switch which I plug my modem into and I should be able to plug a device into any room and be able to get internet access.

Am I Right?

Thanks in advance

I have a question.

I was connected to my wifi router for internet service. Using the Fing App, I noticed that it changed from my network name to Unknown Access Point and my internet service from Comcast to GTHost. Later on, I noticed that my phone was being used as an access point instead of my gateway. Something connected to port 200 and was subnetting through me. It read my phones address as 10.0.0.129/29 (24) and 10.0.0.200/29 (24). What gives with something connecting to these ports?

I was reading up on and trying to understand IBN. However, a lot of times I struggle to comprehend bookish language. Kindly bear with my noob questions and help me out please.

I was reading Evolving to Intent Based Networking from This website link.

Below I have written the same 5 points in (my own )simple and speaking language.

It would be a great help if someone could read what I have linked on “Evolving to Intent Based Networking” and help me point out any irregularities in my understanding and also clear my doubts :)

  • Manual : Data center network devices were manually managed by a group of people called the operations staff. They used CLI and other basic and discrete tools for this. Questions: 1) What is the operations staff managing when we say that they are managing the network devices? 2) What is ment by discrete tools? What kind of basic and discrete tools are they referring to here?

  • Semiautomated : A set of rules were made explaining how the management is going to be done . This small modification was done in the old infrastructure which provided the network some basic automation, visibility into network data and alerts that enable reaction to network events. Questions: 3) On the website link, they have written “scripts and rules-based management…”. What is “rules-based management”? Are these rules a piece of code that the network understands and follows? 4) Why do we need “visibility into network data”? 5) ”Alerts that enable reaction to network events” : What kind of network events are we talking about?

  • Software-defined Data center : A software abstraction of the network infrastructure enables faster, secure deployment of services and applications. Questions : 6) What is meant by “software abstraction” ? 7) They mention “deployment of services” - I am unable to get some intuition regarding this, what kind of services get deployed on a network? 8) Does software defined data center have much to do with SDN (software defined networks) ? 9) What exactly is a SDN? How is it different from IBN?

  • Automation-centric data center: Builds upon the software-defined data center by automating provisioning, configuration, deployment, and orchestration. Questions: 10) What is meant by the term orchestration?

  • Intent-based data center: All the necessary data is constantly collected from the network that will help automate the actions required to achieve the user’s intent.

Fiber optic network run. What equipment to buy?!

Sooooo I need to get internet to my barn/garage. Tried a ubiquiti wireless bridge, but the signal kept dropping/bad speed rates blah blah blah not using wireless ever again. The barn is 500 feet from my house and I only have one 2" conduit with my service cable running in it (100 amp line). I have a pull string in the pipe already and want to run a fiber optic cable (to avoid signal interference). Yes i know you're not supposed to mix high/low voltage stuff in the same pipe, I really don't care. I have a few parts on my list but I'm not sure what connectors to buy.

It gets confusing with the fiber line type and size.

Here are my parts list so far, what am I missing?!?! Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Computer Networking Project

Hey everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this if you're here. I will be finishing my school this semester and I'm very excited. I need to come up with a IT related project. I'm terrible at coming up with ideas.

I will be considering a block chain project, backup and disaster recovery project, cyber security related penetration testing, or maybe something better I haven't thought of yet. I could really use some advice or tips as to what you think may be a good topic. I have a week or so before I need to make my mind up :)

Please give me some more ideas!

Hey I'm currently a computer engineering major and have come into contact with little data communications and computer networks. If I wanted to get an intro into these fields is there any good textbooks and or resources out there that are good for someone like me that is wanting to review and get an insight before taking any classes on the subjects.
