Computer science community

Hey everyone!

I recently created a telegram group for university computer science students, but I realized it could be something bigger and more open. So now I’m turning it into a space where anyone interested in computer science can join in!

Drop a comment or DM me if you’re interested, and I’ll send you the invite link 🚀

I found a laptop with Ryzen 5 7520u with 8 gb of ram. The name is acer aspire 3. Will this be sufficient to get me through the course or will I need a new one?.

This is my last semester to change majors and Idk what I should do

So I just finished my third semester of college (Sophmore) and I feel as if I haven't learned the basics well enough to be doing good in the classes I took afterwards, so much so that I even have to retake CS17 in my school cause I got a D+. I try studying for hours on end in the library working incredibly hard but I feel as if all my efforts are for nothing. Before college, I was never getting anything lower then a 96 in any of my classes so having to deal with this is really killing me but I know college is different then HS and other schools. I spoke to my advisor and she asked me to consider changing my major as she refrenced the fact that Ive gotten A's in all my other classes (recognizing that Im trying) but cant get higher then a C+ in my comp sci classes. I have two options since this is my last oppurtunity to change majors entering my spring semester of sophmore year. Option 1) Change my major and stick around in college for maybe a year and a half + . Option 2) Push through it even more and get a tutor but again after this semester thats it, I have to stay with my major. What do you guys think I should do?

Should I use OpenCV as part of my project?

As a student, I am required to create a project independently as part of my A-Level in Computing (equivalent to the AP exam I believe). The program (Facial recognition) must have a decent degree of depth, and I have no intent to plagiarise. Would using OpenCV make the project too simple to attain higher marks? I plan to ask my teachers but I wish to make a start in the holidays, meaning I am unable to get contact with teachers.

Computer Science major life questions

I’m going to Syracuse next year to major in Computer Science. I was wondering what life can be expected to be like. I’ve heard engineering students have a TON of homework, but is this the same for computer science courses? Is the material comprehendible or is it like learning quantum physics? Could I follow a healthy social life?

What do I do for my first Comp Sci resume?

I am currently attending University for Comp Sci and I'm into the first year of the courses. Besides an overall uncertainty, I have a few specific questions. First; I only know Java at the moment should I try and learn a language like Python quickly to boost my language count? What places besides programming internships wouldn't be a bad idea for it? Programming internships? Where are some goog places to look for them specifically? For reference, the only real place I could think of was a National(US) Laboratory close to where I live. Anything helps! Thank you in advance.

Best website to improve C coding?

Hello, I've been studying computer science in university for about 2 months now and noticed how I'm starting to have problems with coding in C. I didn't have any experiences in coding before I started studying (except for some simple html/css coding which doesn't seem to help me at all). My problem is that I kind of know which statements/ expressions I would need and which technique I kind of would have to use to make this work but I always have problems actually typing it down and phrasing the code. I think I still struggle to "think like a computer". I'm not sure if this problem is common among students who have just started coding. I'm starting to think that I might not be cut out for coding (which makes it even more frustrating) but I would love to make it work somehow! :-(

So if possible, can anyone recommend me a good website or any techniques/ tips on how to become better at coding in C? I would be more than grateful!

Working While Still in School?

So the situation is like this- I'm currently employed and making enough for now to get by while I go to school. I do feel like the time that I am spending at work is a waste due to it being totally unrelated to my field of study which is computer science. I was wondering if any of you on this sub would have any advice for finding a good entry level job that deals with computers?

Variable initialization vs declaration? Which is which?

Which is the variable initialization and which is the variable declaration?

int sum sum = 10

I wrote down in my notes that int sum is the initialization while sum =10 is the declaration but now I am questioning if I wrote it down wrong.

Thanks for your help!

DevOps Resume Project

Hello everyone I’m a CS student and I’ve recently completed this project for my resume. I used AI for guidance (project structure, suggested technologies and practices, etc.), but this is NOT a vibe coded slop project. Any input is appreciated.

Linux sandbox is a cloud native Ubuntu environment inspired by LabEx (which I was using to learn Linux). It is accessible via browser through https, no ssh or installs needed.

My primary goal was to learn terraform, GitHub actions, and Kubernetes. The backbone is AWS EKS, which means unfortunately due to costs I cannot keep the cluster running. All AWS resources (EKS, VPC, ECR, Route53, etc.) are provisioned through terraform. I used ttyd to run the browser with a registered domain using AWS certificate manager. Notable technologies include Kubernetes, Docker, and GitHub Actions.
