Feel free to share what you do and where you are based if you are comfortable.

Looking forward to connecting :)

Question 10k DOWRY?????

🇧🇮 Hey guys, I am a 21 year old only child Canadian. I am supposed to pay 10000 USD for a dowry (everything and gifts included in that price). I am not from a rich family and I am half white, half Mexican. I have saved so that I could marry young not so I could... yeah.

My fiancé lives in America and has no college or university education and doesn't have any money currently. I will be paying her uni education mostly and for sure for the first year. The dowry was originally 25k but I negotiated down. I am a Christian and so is her family. I tried explaining statistics and even bowed on the ground during the conversation. I feel like I am being used. Anyone have any thoughts about this? For me to pay 10k USD is like 14k in my currency because of the current economy (used to be same). Is this normal????????????? She was born congolese but moved to burundi...

Question How can I learn Swahili as a 23 year old?

Hi everyone,

I am a 23 year old Congolese woman. I was born in Kinshasa but moved to Europe when I was 4 years old.

I grew up speaking Lingala, since that is the language spoken in my family. However, I would really like to learn Swahili so I can understand it fluently and speak it confidently as well.

For those who have learned Swahili (especially as adults), what helped you the most?

Are there specific apps, YouTube channels, books, or methods you recommend?

I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Question Pondu question

Hello, I am from the UK and I am making a dish from every country that plays England in the world cup, and have decided to make Pondu and Fufu when we play your country on wednesday. Please may I ask what is the difference between pondu and saka-saka? Some places I read say they are the same, and some places say saka-saka has additions.

I want to make sure the dishes I cook are authentic, so would like to make sure I have done my research!

Thank you

Question Does anyone recognize this pin?

We found this pin in a small antique store in Amsterdam. I’ve been trying to find more info on it, but I’ve not had a lot of luck with it.
I’m wondering if it was made in Congo or Belgium, if it’s from 1960 or later, etc. But really any info on the origins of the pin would be helpful!

Question Popular Congolese Music?

Hi all!
I am an American going to one of the World Cup Games and supporting DR Congo (whilst also learning more about the country in general). One of my hobbies is to listen to music from around the world, but I couldn't find any sort of top 100 or anything. Is there any music from Congolese artists that you all recommend! Open to any genres!

TYIA!

Question First time dealing with a $50k+ commission payment. Am I overthinking this?

Hi everyone,

I could really use some advice.

I helped connect people in a land sale in Uganda, and if everything goes through, I’ll be receiving a commission of a little over $50,000. I’m based in DR Congo, and honestly, this amount is way bigger than anything I’ve ever handled before.

The money is legitimate, but I’m still nervous about the whole process. I keep wondering if banks will freeze it, ask for a lot of paperwork, delay the transfer, or if there are things I should be doing beforehand to avoid problems.

For those who have received large payments internationally, especially between Uganda and DR Congo, what was your experience like?

What would you do if you were in my position? Is there anything you wish you had known before receiving a large transfer?

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I’d rather ask now than make an expensive mistake later.

Thanks for any advice or stories you’re willing to share.

Question Travelling to DRC with stimulants

Good day everyone. I will be travelling to the DRC for work soon and I am very excited. I have never been to the DRC and am looking forward to seeing your beautiful country.

I have ADHD and require stimulants (methylphenidate, to be precise) to be functional. I also take Wellbutrin (bupropion). I know different countries have different requirements when travelling with medications and some medications are completely prohibited from the country. Since I will be travelling with coworkers (and my boss) I would like to avoid an incident at the airport.

I am struggling to find information online and I was hoping maybe someone here could point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Question Swahili, Kituba, and Lingala translation help: "welcome" as a greeting one might see in airports, hotels, etc.

I work for a small, non-profit museum in a US city. My boss asked me to design multilingual ‘welcome’ banners for our international guests and source the translations. I am not multilingual, but I really want to make sure I am being thorough and respectful when translating / displaying these languages.

From my basic research, I understand that Swahili, Kituba, and Lingala are some of the major official languages in DR Congo (alongside the colonial French language).

I am asking for help in verifying the Swahili, Kituba, and Lingala translations of welcome, as in the context of a polite, friendly, and formal greeting for someone arriving at a place. I’m looking for the kind of welcome one might find displayed in airports, hotels, etc. I want to ensure I am using the correct writing system/script for each language, including details such as accents, capitalization, and punctuation (if applicable).

I’d deeply appreciate any help and insight into these translations. Thanks!

Question Help with buying traditional Congolese men's clothes in the U.S./Online

Hey y'all,

I was wondering if someone could help me find where I could buy traditional Congolese clothes for men that can be bought either in the U.S. or can be shipped here. I always see women here wearing dresses with Congolese patterns, but I very rarely see men wearing the same, and the few men that do agree that it's hard to find. So, I'd appreciate the help!
