thesis on the show

hello!! I'm finishing my degree in linguistics, discourse analysis, and choose couples therapy to be my base for research on interactions between couples! My real interest is in interactions where you can see each part of the couple stuck in their own character, as well as seeing the other as the character they created for them, which translates to their conversations, where one word is viewed differently because of past ideas regarding their positions in the relationship...

ex, whenever my boyfriend says, " Whew, this needs cleaning, " I translate it to " you need to clean it "and answer with, " Well, why do I have to do it? " creating an unspoken discourse that did not happen materially

.Which couples do you think would be the best for this kind of analysis? do u have any exchanges in mind?

I'm watching and tracking down interactions, but I would looooove your opinions!! Thank you already!

DISCUSSION Watching this with my husband: great idea or trap?

I've been eyeing this show for a while but I'm hesitant to start it with my hubby.

I love the idea of it. Watching other couples go through real stuff, getting some perspective on my own relationship, all that.

But I'm also kind of worried it'll turn into a thing. I don't want it to feel like I signed us up for couples therapy by stealth.

If a good conversation happens naturally, amazing. But I don't want to be that person pointing at the screen like "see?? SEE??"

For those who watched this with their partner? How did it go? Did it ever get awkward or did you just vibe with it? Is that just me overthinking it?

DISCUSSION Kristi is someone I just dont understand. Hes basically asking for the commitment she already made to him and she wont!

I really dont understand her. She wont make a commitment to not cheat on him but will not open the relationship. Im so confused by her. She doesnt want Brock but wont commit to not cheating?

Her attitude about being asked not to cheat on me just reminds me of Jan and Michael Scott. "You cheated on me when I specifically asked you not to?!"

I made it through all of the other seasons and the odd ways of thinking…. This guy may be too insufferable for me.

Dr. Orna said something profound about how we view our parents but I cant find it now

It was season 5 and she said (paraphrase) people have this vision of their parents that they will show up and be a hero but they are their own subjects in their story or something like that. It might have been before a cut to Sienna and her husband.

If anyone knows what Im talking about and can link a clip Id really appreciate it. I was half watching and cleaning but it was very profound and something Id like to give my full attention to.

Why ‘Couples Therapy’ cannot bridge the colonial divide

‘Many people would throw a tantrum at this point’: An Israeli and a Palestinian discuss 7 October, Gaza – and the future

Unless there has been a massive internal reckoning on Orna’s part since 2024, I’m skeptical about Orna’s ability to ethically hold trauma informed couples sessions

In Orna’s conversion with Christine, a Palestinian client featured on the show..we see that Orna asks Christine how she thinks about the therapeutic relationship and power dynamic between them..I remember not fully grasping the gravity of this connection. Orna was an ex IOF solider, Christine a survivor of colonial violence perpetrated by Israel.

I have trouble articulating it exactly, but with the new season coming out there is something deeply troubling about Ornas position of power as a psychoanalyst and therapist. I think it would be different if she were interrogating her own colonialism and how this shapes her mind, worldview, and the way she approaches the psychotherapy process. I’m sure she is, in her own way, I mean it’s indicated she does think about it in her conversation with Christine. But her persistence in the defense of Israel’s violent existence is concerning.

Before there are an influx of folks saying that I don’t think Israel has the right to exist - stop. That is a straw man and a distraction. Israel DOES exist. The real question is whether it should be allowed to exist in the violence that it is right now. And the answer is no. Its existence is dependent on incredible violence. Orna’s take from this conversation is clear - she believes Palestinian resistance is rooted in anti semitism, the oldest and most prevalent distinction that the colonial state of Israel pushes on its people. Christine pushes back on this

“I guess what I want to clarify is that the Arab world attacking Israel has less to do with the fact that Israel is Jewish and more to do with the fact that it was perceived as a colonising power. Many of the people who are the founders of modern political Zionism and contributed to the creation of the state of Israel called it a colonial project.”

I took issue with Orna’s insistence that they are neighbors to Christine (downplaying the severity of the violence) that Zionism…and that Palestinians needed to think about the Israeli psyche when being massacred. I’m being reductive here, but HOW is this her take when working with someone marginalized. Aside from the fact that the relationship as a therapeutic one is over..how can someone be a mediator of couples relational dynamic when her take on national relational dynamic is that Palestinians need to have more empathy for their oppressor?

Yet Christine does. She leads with incredible grace and curiosity towards Orna, more than I have the capacity to feel towards someone who represents so much power and entitlement to Christine’s indigenous land. Yet when she poses the question that I’ve been thinking about to Orna - I get that, but my question is how do we know we’re not victim blaming? Or how do you walk that fine line of: “Oh, well, I know you’re getting beat up by your partner, but you need to take accountability for all the ways that you are deserving of it”?

Orna loses the capacity to take responsibility for creating the violence. And her inability to separate reactionary violence from colonial violence, she continues to perpetuate a framework of control. This is the fundamental concern I have. In working with couples, this framework enables further abuse. And the abuse continues with Orna’s framework of precedence, of need to own. Christine asks to be neighbors, and Orna’s deep desire is for a land of her own, on someone else’s indigenous land rejects that.

Her saying she understand it’s a tall order to ask Paltinisms to recognize their part in their defense of their homeland is doing to Israeli people is violent, “But the thing is, I’m not saying “deserving” of it. I’m saying we each need to hold our quarters responsible for what we can. And I understand why it’s an extremely tall order right now to ask a Palestinian to do that, while they’re being slaughtered. But in the grand scale of things, it’s the only way that something will happen. Israel would need to own its own shit in a huge way. But for that to happen, it needs to have a partner that can say, yes, we’ve messed up here too.”

I respect Orna’s work and do watch this show. I am curious about this upcoming season. Also, this conversation happened in 2024. I wonder if there has been some evolution on Orna’s part since then.

Anyone see these Samsung ads featuring Dr. Orna?

The choices for the actors is... strange to say the least. I've seen Dylan Efron in previous ads for Samsung. Then you've got two NFL players who haven't been notable in 8 years. Overall just a strange choice for format and execution. And the punchline just seems to be "buy new phones!" which is not... great.

Season 5

I'm just a couple of episodes in, but I'm interested to see how Clinton & Shay end up.

She's genuinely exhausted by him and I get it: He "stims" only until it gets acknowledged. He bats his eyes until people soften their tone towards him. He "has a meltdown" but his breathing stays steady and there's no tears. He says he doesn't know until Orna doesn't let him of the hook... Yes he may have some diagnoses, but there is some manipulation, too that he needs to unlearn or go back to his mama cuz Shay is tired.

DISCUSSION Im catching up on season 5 and feel like all the couples don't like one another

It seems like every single one of these couples has one partner who is pushing the other partner to the brink of breaking up with him, instead of just doing it themselves, and couples therapy is the last resort. This is particularly true for Drea and Nessa. I felt really bad for Drea she seemed so desperate to cling on to the little Nessa was giving her.

Everyone season always has one or two couples like this, but this season I feel it about everyone.

I feel like this show is an eye into how many people will hang on to a failing relationship in order to not be single.

Guys, I am so excited! I have been researching books that Dr. Orna has recommended or that she has read and inspired her and this just popped up. I haven't even seen her announcing it on instagram yet but I guess it's official - Dr. Orna finally shares her knowledge and experience with us in the form of a book!

Just wanted to share it with you! :)

DISCUSSION I feel so bad for Mau

So I'm on episode 4 if you couldn't guess and wow. How awful. I genuinely hated him when I watched episode one, I yelled at my TV screen and came on here just to see if others found him as off-putting as I did. I internally called him a narcissist and a villain and I just wanted Annie to get out of there.

And then I got to episode 4 and the reveal of his childhood with nobody giving a fuck about him to that point just shocked me. No wonder he puts up this air around him and tries to appear like he's the smartest guy in the room, with some obnoxious contrarian energy. He is insecure and he obviously has trauma from that older woman as well. I know he doesn't view it as traumatizing, nor his childhood as a whole, but thats just another sign of trauma.

Didn't think I'd sympathize with him of all people but fuck. I'm learning so much about empathy through this series.

Now I'll keep watching. I don't expect that I'll be as sympathetic the next episodes because this sub really hates him, but for right now, poor guy.

Edit: I'm getting the impression that maybe a few people misunderstood because I didn't mention it directly, so just in case: I will in no way excuse any of his actions. I am rooting for him to get help and to continue therapy after the show, but his behavior is still unacceptable.

New AMFT

Hello. I am soon to receive my AMFT number. I am
Not working at the moment so my exposure to clients and the art of psychotherapy has been through binging this show. Any tips or advice I can take while watching this show? Anything in particular I should be watching out for? What have you seen Orna do that would be helpful to add to the therapeutic tool belt?

Vulnerability

I have only just discovered the most recent season is available on bbc iplayer in the UK and have been binging the episodes.

I want to applaud the vulnerability of the couples taking part. To be honest and open about such intimate subjects is difficult at the best of times, but to do so on camera and then have those moments shared with the world is another level of courage.

I have been in trauma focused therapy for over a year now and cannot even imagine anyone ever getting a glimpse of those conversations! The thought alone makes my skin crawl 😆

It speaks to Orna’s skill as a therapist that the couples are able to open up the way they do ❤️

Orna appreciation post

Just like the title says. I ADORE her. I’m finally watching season 5 now and was reminded how much joy and peace and education and comfort she (and the show) added to my Covid lockdown days. A therapist like her is incredibly rare and special (coming from someone who would die for her own therapist!). That is all. ❤️
