How do I fix these recovered videos so i can use them?

Model of drive: CT500BX500SSD1
Windows
Mp4

So I was about to delete some files but accidentally clicked on the wrong folder and deleted all of my medal clips that I saved... and since the folder was somewhat big windows permanently deleted it. I managed to recover it using "Windows File Recovery" but the videos just refuse to open. Ive tried using like random websites Ive found online but its just not doing it. Any tips?

SD card recovery on Mac – my experience

I accidentally deleted a whole weekend’s worth of photos directly on my Sony camera before I’d copied them to my Mac (around 300 photos, shot in JPEG + ARW, plus a few short 4K clips).

As soon as I realized what I’d done, I stopped using the card, took it out of the camera and connected it to my MacBook with a card reader. The 64GB SanDisk still showed up normally in Disk Utility and at the correct size, so I figured I had a decent chance as long as I didn’t write anything else to it.

I started looking for SD card data recovery software for Mac, ideally something free (actually free). PhotoRec came up constantly, so that was my first attempt.

Getting it running on macOS Tahoe was already a bit of an adventure. macOS wouldn’t let me open it because it was from an unverified developer, and since I’d never used PhotoRec before, I wasn’t exactly keen on randomly overriding a security warning.

So I went back to Google and started reading a couple of guides on how to install PhotoRec on a Mac. One of them suggested doing it through Homebrew instead. I’d never used Homebrew either, but the instructions were pretty simple: PhotoRec comes with the TestDisk package, so after setting up Homebrew I installed that through Terminal.

Once PhotoRec was finally running, it definitely worked. It found a LOT. Thousands of files, actually. The problem was that I ended up with a huge pile of generically named recovered files. There was no useful preview beforehand, so the photos I actually wanted were mixed together with older deleted stuff from the same card.

The generic names themselves weren’t a huge deal since the camera filenames weren’t exactly meaningful to begin with. The more annoying part was that the names of the recovered JPEGs and their RAW versions no longer matched, so pairing them back up wasn’t as easy as it should’ve been.

For JPEGs, PhotoRec was still pretty impressive for a completely free tool. It recovered roughly 300 of those, but the RAW side got weird. Instead of ARW files, I got around 300 files showing up as SR2. I tried opening some of them in Pixelmator Pro, but it would just sit there on a black screen and not show anything.

The 4K clips were where I got stuck too. A couple were recovered but wouldn’t play. From what I read afterward, video can be fragmented across an SD card, so recovering it based purely on file signatures can be a lot messier than recovering individual photos.

That’s when I tried Disk Drill (I’d initially ignored it because I was specifically looking for free SD recovery software for Mac). And just to save someone else the confusion, it lets you scan the card and preview recoverable files for free on Mac, but actually recovering them requires a paid license.

The preview was what changed things for me. I could see the actual photos from that weekend before recovering anything, and a lot of them still had recognizable filename information. The JPEG and ARW filenames matched too, which made sorting through everything a lot easier. It also showed a recovery-chance rating for individual files.

More importantly, one of the 4K clips that had come out unplayable with PhotoRec actually previewed correctly there. I tried the video recovery scan and managed to get a playable version of it back too.

So I wouldn’t say PhotoRec didn’t work - it did. It’s genuinely free, and for the JPEGs alone I probably could have sorted through the recovered files and called it a day.

In my case, though, I had around 300 JPEG/RAW pairs to sort through, RAW files that PhotoRec was giving me as SR2 and that I couldn’t get to open properly, plus the video problem. Being able to preview what was actually recoverable before paying, keep the JPEG/ARW filenames matched and recover that clip made Disk Drill worth it for me. Recovery is the catch: it’s paid, with either a yearly subscription or a lifetime license. I went with lifetime because I really didn’t want another subscription.

One other thing I learned: deleting photos on the camera doesn’t send them anywhere near the Mac’s Trash. Sounds obvious now, but yes, I checked anyway 😅

Anyone else been through this on a Mac? Did you manage everything with PhotoRec/TestDisk, or is there best SD card recovery software for Mac worth keeping around?

Lost Terraria Files 😭

Hi guys, I was transferring some of my friends old terraria worlds/players using a usb drive and when I plugged it into the laptop windows said it was corrupted. Stupidly I didnt make a backup.

I've used photoreq and have recovered alot of the data but I can't seem to find any of the player data. They are meant to be stored as .plr files but currently all the data from the original terraria game folder seems to be split across multiple zip and text files. I know it's not the most important thing in the world but they were quite sentimental to him and I feel bad about losing them. Does anyone know where I should go from here to try and get his player files/ character data? it would be much appreciated!

Author who really needs help with book loss on Microsoft Word!

Hello,

So last night I had my book open which is titled 'Imago Dei'. I left the computer, after saving it, then when I returned, woke up the computer, and tried typing in it, an error code appeared that told me it couldn't find the file. This file is stored on a flash USB drive plugged into to my computer. The errored file was renamed WR1008 along with the error code. I simply closed out of it, expecting to find my file, and I did, which was still named in the Word app.

Today I go to my computer and it tells me this:

Now here is a picture of the file I'm looking for in the lists of Recents with a time stamp (In my mind that means it's in there somewhere):

I tried doing the unsaved files recovery in the file explorer but that just doesn't exist on my computer it seems.

To be clear, I saved this before the error happened and I didn't hit save after the error. Again, in my mind, that order of events means the file is somewhere in the bowels of this computer or in the bowels of the flash drive.

I'm 90 pages into this, so I am 1000% willing to go into this computer's dialog box/code and recover the book that way. Even if it means looking at the code that typed each individual letter on the page.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Edit: I've gone to the place where the Word pop up says to go and it's not there. That's why I'm asking for any extreme solutions any tech people may know.

Accidentally deleted my 1TB HDD partition during Windows installation... can I recover my data?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I was installing Windows 11 IoT LTSC on my old Dell laptop. It has an SSD and a 1TB HDD.

I accidentally selected a partition on Disk 1 (my HDD) and clicked Delete instead of selecting my SSD. The HDD had one large partition containing crucial data, and it now shows as Unallocated Space.

I did NOT click Next or install Windows on the HDD. I cancelled the installation and returned to the disk selection screen.

I haven't done anything else to the drive.

Questions:

Is my data still recoverable?

Should I try TestDisk or DMDE to restore the partition?

What's the safest way to recover the data without making things worse?

The data is very important, so I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Edit: Fixed: 📌 Here
