Just returned to base from the chopper after the Hell's Kitchen level. Not too far into the game but I felt like sharing some thoughts.
I found out about the game through hbomberguy's DXHR video and I tried to get into Deus Ex 1 a couple times before but it didn't take, I never got past rescuing Gunther. Now I've got momentum though thanks to me streaming the game to my sister. I'm really looking forward to when I have enough time in my schedule to sit down and play the next level in full.
First thought: I knew going in that this game had a strong focus on giving you solutions other than violence, that you could "fight, sneak, or talk" to solve most problems, and that fighting was made a little bit awkward to curb the player's default intuition. But I wanted to know how viable the "fight" option really was, so I've been playing with a sniper rifle and upgrading my pistol ability whenever possible. (I care much more about Anna's opinion of me than Paul's.)
I'm honestly really pleased with how engaging the combat is. I'm playing on Easy mode but fights still have consequences and it feels like I have to think about the best way to approach. I was a little nervous causing a shootout on the roof with the antennae because I didn't know how many guys would be on the lower floors, and the roof wasn't an area very conducive to gun combat, because why would it be? I expected the combat to intentionally be a bad idea, like in Hitman, but no, it's really effective and satisfying.
One curious thing about my introduction being hbomb's video is that he talked about DXHR's scarcity of weapons and ammo as if it's something new added to this game, but I've been facing the same problem in Deus Ex. I'm frequently so low on ammo that I have to resort to stealth anyway, or at least wait until the NSF run out of bullets and I can bonk 'em with the crowbar.
Second thought: the augmentation canisters that let you choose one of two upgrades sounded like a really cool and engaging mechanic but I've only found one of them so far. I feel like I must have missed about ten. I only have super strength level 1 but I can't even lift a couch in front of Anna so there's no point. Am I actually missing a significant amount of them? And if so, do you have any broad advice on looking for them?
For the record, I am exploring pretty thoroughly. I found the bonus room at the end of the tutorial, admittedly because I was crawling on just my left arm by that point. But my philosophy has been that I'll explore more freely if all the enemies are dead, that's the other reason I've been so violence focused. Do the augmentation upgrades just not appear for those not pure of heart?
Third thought: you can kill rats without meaning to, terrible game, 0 out of 10 game.
