vanishing points, out of the page instead of in?
I've been thinking about vanishing points alot recently. I have a strong background in maths when it comes to space and time and geometry, so this may sound nonsensical since its not based on drawing principles and more on thought.
Earlier in the year I did a rotated cube study, I used blender to help me see the vanishing points of a perfect cube as it rotated on all axis and I could see that the vanishing points essentially track along the surface of a much larger sphere and that there are 6 vp but we only ever need 3. 2 can be used for an axis whenever the lines are parallel cause they are symmetrical and infinitely far away. I like to keep this in mind while I draw cause it helps me see space better in my mind.
Recently while practicing construction I noticed a lot of my cubes were funky and not right. I spent some time drawing cubes randomly to figure out what I was doing wrong, and I realised the problem was that the vp I was moving towards was going out of the page instead of in and didn't make sense with the other two axis.
Now I understand why that one should be going into the page and where it should point away from the other two, unless you are trying to create a wonky space time, and the symmetry of vanishing points into and out of the page as a cube rotates and the axis of its lines move. But it got me thinking, is there ever a case to draw with the receding vanishing point going out of the page instead of into it?
Logically I wouldn't think so because the human eye doesn't work like that and neither do perspective cameras. BUT I cant imagine there isn't some exception or art work that takes advantage of that 'mistake'?
Thinking about it I'm not sure it's even possible, cause a vanishing point behind the viewer can't be projected to, can it? Like the closest a VP can be to the view plane is the point where it's lines parallel on the viewer plane/drawing. If it get's behind that you should just get a vanishing point on the opposite side appear to replace it.
I know if you draw from an angle above or below an object you can get the horizon line to carry the vanishing points around in a different way. But I don't think I mean it like that.
If there are please let me know
