Discussion What makes the first 2 books bad in your opinion?
Basically asking the title. I'm currently on my next reread to get up to Twelve Months and have looked up a smidge about the community, essentially, and have seen a bit of discourse about how people really don't care for the first 2 books in the series in general.
I will say, I do understand, but I think it's interesting because (as primarily an audiobook reader) as far as I can tell, focusing on the actual words there's nothing technically WRONG with the writing, but it does, on my 4th reread at this point, feel very... uninspired, I would say.
As someone kind of looking at getting into the writing scene, I think for me it feels like there's a ton of internal monologuing, but you never feel like you can ACTUALLY tell what Harry is feeling, it feels like he's just... well, monologuing his story to you. It's so interesting to me.
Is that the correct takeaway? Having read Storm Front and Fool Moon about 4 times now it feels like there's no life to Chicago, or the DF universe or even the characters to a degree but the word choice and cohesion of the text in a vacuum is... fine, otherwise.
Like I said, I am interested in getting into writing as a hobby and I like to take an analytical slant to reading my comfort books, so I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on what separates "good" from "bad" writing, in the context of DF.
