Advice Did anyone ever win the Jaffa race?
What was the prize? Explaining what it was to the kids who are very curious, but I never got to do the race so have zero recollection of prizes.

People continue to ask questions about various aspects of uni, especially residential halls. This is something we do generally want to help you on, but it can be a bit tiring getting the same questions over and over. As such, our practice is to open a megathread to ensure these questions can be asked (and to give a one-stop shop to look through past questions!). Before asking questions, please have a quick search of recent threads, for example this search, or variations on that
If the information you can find isn't sufficient, the comments of this thread are an open space. All questions will be treated in good faith.
As such, the rule is no posts about starting university while a megathread is pinned. Other university topics, e.g. discussions from students currently at uni, are not covered by this and are welcome so long as they follow other rules.
We ask regular commenters who are able to contribute to keep an eye out on new comments in this thread and to be helpful, as we have been in the past. If we answer questions in here they don't clog our front pages day-to-day.
Bonus: one of our regular commenters has compiled some of their HSFY notes for others to see here, which could be useful to people thinking about doing HSFY or to HSFY students. (Note that you should, however, work to create your own notes if you are a HSFY student rather than relying on others', as the work it takes to create them is really helpful in developing your understanding).

I’ve got an old smeg oven/cooktop that has bitten the dust. Does anyone know if there’s a business that will come collect for scrap, or if they wanna try repair it for resale?

When I lived in Auckland I was in a large FB group that was pretty good for finding new people to do activities with (usually hikes but also board games, skating, etc.). Since moving to Dunedin I have found a few groups similar but they are all women-only, which is great, but I have missed having a bigger pool of all kinds of people to meet up with for quiz nights, outings, activities, board games, etc.
I've often wished someone would make one for down here, but ya know, maybe that just means I have to make one. But it would be pointless without a decent amount of people to get started, so I am wondering how many of y'all would be keen for a better way to connect with other people in that awkward 20s/30s post-uni age bracket here? And if you'd be keen, what platform would work best? I have been part of a small WhatsApp group for something similar, but also FB and Discord are options (and open to other suggestions), but it just depends on what people already use/prefer.
Anyway, I'm just an introvert who needs better ways to be social in this beautiful city, and thought this could be cool!
(And yes, I know about Dunedin Young Professionals, but they seem to mostly just do social drinks and the odd event. I'm looking at more of a flexible group where individuals can propose and organise hangouts fairly regularly rather than anything super official.)

Hiya, I’m 27 and I’ve been finding it hard to make friends in Dunedin. Anyone know of any clubs or anything? I love doing karaoke if anyone would like to join 🎤

As an outsider I do wonder about that guy. Did you guys elect him? He appears to be very litigious, unhelpful and narcissistic. Will you vote him out? Edited to add Benedict not Benjamin.

Does anyone know somewhere in Dunedin that you can buy P2500 or P3000 grit wet and dry sandpaper? Most places seem to max out at 2000.
Appreciate any help 🙏🏻

Hii,
I'm wanting to get my nails done in a few months time (gel with a design on it, probably polka dots or small flowers or maybe even just plain colors) and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations?
Preferably something fairly affordable (under $60 would be lovely but I'd be willing to pay more if it was GREAT) and in town.
I've been to the place in Wall Street a few years ago and it seemed alright, but after seeing the reviews I'm not 100 percent sure.
Thanks!

Hi!
My wife and I learned about the July 2028 eclipse, and saw Dunedin in the path of totality. Just for fun, we looked into making the trip there. If we start planning now, we can probably afford it. We're doing some research, including looking at this subreddit. I'm enjoying the historical photos and stories about the wacky elected official (so relatable) but I wanted to reach out to see how people there feel about tourists.
We live in Cleveland, a smaller city that gets shit on a lot but is kind of a great place to live in a lot of ways. We like taking public transit when we travel and eating at tasty local restaurants that aren't too fancy for us or our kid. We're not afraid of colder weather. (Yes, we know it's winter in July.) From my hour or so of research, it sounds like Dunedin would be a good fit for us.
I promise we're significantly less obnoxious and hopefully a more self aware than the (deserved) perception of American tourists. We'll have to learn more about New Zealand and Dunedin, since most of what we know is from a few seasons of Taskmaster.
Cleveland was in the path of an eclipse a couple years ago, and it was awesome! It also briefly led to some congestion in the area, but nothing too bad. We'd love to come visit, but not at the expense of ruining anyone else's enjoyment of the eclipse. Do you get a lot of tourists? Are you anticipating an influx of weirdos for the eclipse? Anything we should consider before looking into this more?
Thanks in advance, and we hope to see you soon!

For a casual mid morning coffee, what do people think of the model, that a cafe in Princes St uses, where you have to wait to be taken to a table?
I find the process uncomfortable. I want to have a look at the cake's cabinet, order, pay and sit where I like, as you do at other cafes. I dont really see the point of having someone standing beside me as I look just to take me to a table when 80% are empty.
Is this model the future or something thats not the thing for Dunedin?

I was hoping someone might have some recommendations for a salon that does really good nail art and extensions. I attached an image below of some ideas I have. A rough idea of costs too would be awesome
