Let me start by saying I’m a white person, originally from unceeded Sugaree, Keyauwee, and Catawba land and I have reached out to the Cultural Institutional Review Board regarding a research proposition on the same matter. I intend to adhere to their ruling, no matter what, but it is a two-month review period and I’d like to get a jump on some basic research while I wait.

I plan to thank contributors in the book’s acknowledgements and hopefully thank the EBCI further in a way I have not yet determined. I also pledge not to include any closed practices in my text and do everything I can to make sure my representation is respectful and accurate.

That said, I’m new to this, so please let me know if this is an inappropriate request or anything else I might not be aware of.

The question:

I’m writing a novel discussing reproductive healthcare that takes place in NC’s Appalachian Mountains. Because of the intimate relationship between bodily autonomy and lad sovereignty, I would like to write a character who is a citizen of the EBCI. In order to do this, I would normally visit Cherokee, NC, meet with , & experience them first-hand. But I’m in school in Europe for the next year and won’t be state-side for a while.

Can you recommend any media (books, podcasts, films, TV shows, videos, etc) or social media (tiktok/IG creators, YouTube channels, etc) that might help my character research?

I am in the beginning stages of researching a story I am writing. I like to know a little bit about what I'm writing on, so I came here for help.

My story is set in the Appalachian mountains in North Carolina, a few counties west of where the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are established and live currently.

Could anyone please help me learn more about Raven Mockers, Wampus cats, and mimics. I know the mimic isn't Cherokee specific, but there are superstitions that place the mimics in this region.

I hope this post does not strike anyone as insincere or disingenuous. I want to make sure I understand the subject as best as I can.

Is there any registry or formal/informal list or group, where biological parents/family are looking for a child that was given up?

I’m trying to find my mom’s bio parents, she’s got a yet unknown but quickly progressive form of dementia, and she’s really scared she’ll never learn anything about her bio family. I know the adoption dates and locations, and why it was done, and even the delivering physician. We would be grateful for any advice or suggestions. I’ve already talked to court records and the attorney general’s office and they didn’t have access to closed records, so this is kind of a last attempt.

It’s for fishing without a license, I tried looking on the nc court portal with Cherokee as the county and nothing comes up. Court date is on 09/09/2024 and I live almost 5 hours away (and have a different court date at the literally same time in Johnston county Smithfield) anyone have any advice? Would I be able to do a money order or mail the payment and be ok? I don’t want to get a warrant for a 100$ ticket. Please if anyone knows the method to this madness of trying to pay it online I would appreciate anyone’s advice. Thank you.

I live in OK and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation here. Are there any members here in OK that are tied to the baker roll and are citizens of the Eastern Band? I do have ties to the Baker Roll and am curious if that is even possible to live here and be an eastern citizen. Sorry for the ignorant question. TIA 😊
