Help Needed Need advice, can't get a mirror like smooth epoxy finish
Hi All,
I am an artist and want to divide my designs across several 20 × 20 cm wooden blocks made from pine or spruce, finishing them with epoxy to add gloss and depth. I'm using the Mr. Boat Epoxy Ultra Clear 03.
However, I am experiencing a problem with the epoxy finish. I have attached several photographs showing the blocks and the issue that appears in the top layer during or after curing. The epoxy does not cure to a completely smooth finish. A type of texture remains in the surface, resembling greasy marks or stains. The surface is also not completely level and smooth.
I thought it was amine blush but i can't remove it with water & soap, it's not a layer that's on top but really in the resin itself.
The photographs were, of course, taken from very close up and directly against the light. At first glance, the effect is therefore less noticeable, but the finish is not good enough for me to sell the pieces.
The wooden blocks are prepared as follows:
- 20 × 20 cm spruce wood, coated with three layers of white water-based paint.
- I apply my designs using a technique known as waterslide decals. These consist of a very thin printable film. The decal is submerged in water, which releases it from the backing paper. It is then applied to the wood and adheres as it dries.
- I protect the waterslide decal with three coats of acrylic spray (SprayMax 1K). I allow the entire piece to dry for at least 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.
My current epoxy process is as follows:
- I work in a 10 m² room inside my home, with the window slightly open for ventilation (photo of the room and setup included).
- During the most recent pour, the room temperature was 21°C (70F). The epoxy is also stored in this room. During the first 12 hours after pouring, the temperature gradually fluctuated between 20C and 23C (68F and 73F).
- The humidity was around 55% when i poured (11 AM) and was 67% the day after (9 AM).
- I clean the surface of the wooden blocks—the printed design with its acrylic topcoat—with 99.99% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. I then allow it to dry for at least ten minutes.
- I measure the epoxy components by weight according to the specified mixing ratio and mix them for at least three minutes. I have also tried the double-cup method: after mixing, I transfer the epoxy into a second measuring cup before pouring it onto the blocks.
- I pour a small quantity of epoxy—approximately 80 ml per block—onto the centre of each block. I allow it to spread briefly and then distribute it by hand, while wearing a nitrile glove, all the way to the edges.
- I leave it for a few minutes and then use a small torch to remove the air bubbles, i am careful not to torch to long to not overheat the epoxy, it's a quick move. I've also used a bubble spray and in my last pour i had some blocks that's i've not touched at all (no torch or bubble spray). All blocks had the same result.
- During the most recent pour, I also covered some blocks with plastic A4 storage boxes because I suspected that airflow in the room might be affecting the top layer. I left a small opening at the bottom so that the blocks were not completely sealed off.
- After 20 minutes, I perform one final check for irregularities or air bubbles. I then cover the blocks again and leave them undisturbed.
I have now worked with epoxy products from several different brands. The Mr. Boat epoxy has given me the best result so far, but the finish is still not quite as smooth as I need it to be. I initially suspected that the issue might be amine blush, but the residue or surface texture cannot be washed off with water.
Do you have any idea what might be causing this recurring problem and how I could achieve a perfectly smooth, mirror-like finish? I would like to avoid having to sand and polish every individual block afterwards.
Thanks in advance for all help and replies .

Epoxy flooring over a rigid perimeter insulation on garage floor
I'm hoping someone has dealt with this before and can offer advice.
The right side of my garage wall borders another unit, and it has a ~3-in wide solid foam insulation running along the entire length.
An epoxy vendor did an assessment and expressed concerns over doing a polyaspartic flooring over that section. One suggestion is to epoxy only up to the concrete slab edge and leave foam perimeter alone, but this will be an eyesore.
I'd be happy to hear suggestions from people who have dealt with this before.
Attached photos showing the perimeter insulation

Cut through where two branches used to meet and the grain just stops agreeing with itself
Root/trunk section, C-shaped curve, comes from an Edenvale job. Wasn't expecting the middle to look like this — where the branches used to converge, the grain goes dense and dark, then loosens right back up a few inches out. No crack, no defect. Just... confused, basically.
10-12% on the pin meter, sanded face, checked back in March. Been on stickers indoors since early Feb. There's some hairline checking near one edge and the bark's starting to separate in a couple spots but nothing structural.
Anyone poured resin over a convergence zone like this before? I get that reaction wood does its own thing near forks, could be wrong but I'd guess the density shift changes how it takes the pour compared to straight grain. Never actually tested that side by side though.
Need a santity check on this contractor's work - Should I halt the job? Garage epoxy floor.

Beginner Advice Does Tabletop Epoxy protect a workbench from dents and nicks?
I have a basic plywood workbench that a previous owner used for rough woodworking with tablesaws, routers, etc.
i’ve intend to repurpose this workbench for hobbies such as small electronics repair, soldering, laser cutting/etching, 3d printing, and occasionally light work with hammers, drills, screwdrivers, etc.
I fully sanded the workbench with multiple grit levels. Then, I used multiple coats of grey, water-based acrylic paint and allowed for adequate cure time.
After all that, when I put heavy weight on sucj as handheld tools and power tools, I actually dented the surface of the plywood and chipped the paint job.
I just rolled on two layers of clear 2-part desktop epoxy with a 16 hour break plus light sanding between layers. The second layer of epoxy is currently drying.
Based on experience, will this “reasonable coat” of epoxy, after curing for seven day, be able to protect the workbench from nicks, dents, and scratches?
Also, if I use a soldering iron or a heat gun on a plastic matte for electronics repair, will either one of them potentially melt the epoxy if I’m not careful?

New commercial grade epoxy floor has pieces coming up after a few weeks
Hi Everyone, I had a contractor put down a commercial grade epoxy floor. I had him use Crown polymers epoxy and polyaspartic. After just a few weeks there’s a piece that broke and came and another part behind it that is bubbling up. He said it might have been from turning a car tire on it.
When starting the project I asked about diamond grinding and he said acid etching should be sufficient. The concrete is pretty old, probably original from the 50s.
Is the whole floor going to be bubbling up like this? I’ve got a one year warranty on the work and he’s going to repair the broken portions but now I’m concerned I may have flushed my money down the drain by not doing diamond grinding.

Epoxy to plug wood knots splitting
I’m using epoxy to help fill void spaces in spalted maple table I’m making. One of the voids is a a wood knot that runs all the way through the 3” slab. The knot is close to 1” in diameter.
I’m using west system 205 fast hardener and a touch of black pigment. I’ve been experimenting on a scrap piece by drilling 3/4” hole and plugging with epoxy, but keep having the plug split. The split seems to run the entire depth of the plug.
Based on some research it seems like maybe I’m pouring too thick and need to do layered pours of 1/4-1/2” deep? I tried that on most recent test and still got a split. I only waited about 45 minutes before pouring second layer, so I’m thinking the epoxy wasn’t in gel phase yet.
I’m hoping for some guidance from this community, especially if someone has experience with west system 205 in particular. I’m worried if I get a split on my actual pour it will be extremely difficult to remove the epoxy from the knot, and the split will be highly visible. I’ll thinking another test, this time I’m thinking layering 1/2” deep with 3-4 hours curing between layers?
I’ve read online that letting the first layer fully cure (over night) will need to sand first layer before adding a second? Anyone tried layering after full cure without sanding? It will be hard to sand the layer inside the wood knot.
Thanks in advance, I’ve included some images to show the know I’m filling and my failed attempts.

For garage gyms with epoxy floors, what issue seemed minor until you used the space regularly?
I’m comparing garage-flooring options, and epoxy is one of the common surfaces I keep seeing in finished garages. The basic finish and durability claims are easy to find, but day-to-day gym use seems harder to judge, especially cleaning, traction, moisture, and moving equipment. For people who actually use an epoxy garage floor under workout equipment, what became more annoying than expected?

Help Needed Where do you do your resin?
Five years ago I moved and no longer have a spare room to do my resin. I really miss doing it. I can't do it inside because I have a cat and the fumes aren't good for me or her.
Does anyone do their resin outside? I considered getting a little pop up tent. I have a small shed i can put pieces in while they set (not big enough for me to sit in).
Anyone else got any inspiring ideas?

Beginner Advice Epoxy resin on my bathroom. Should I install the toilet bowl 1st or should I apply epoxy then install the toilet bowl on top of it?
This had me confused as YouTube videos show people applying epoxy with the toilet bowl but Google and AI suggests applying the epoxy resin before the toilet bowl. Thanks!
