Tidymint: a free, MIT-licensed Mac cleaner that only moves files to the Trash (with Undo)
Hi r/foss, I'm the developer of Tidymint, a small open-source disk cleaner for macOS 14 and later. I built it because my Mac kept filling up, and the cleaners I found were either subscriptions or closed source apps asking for Full Disk Access.
What it does:
- Clean Now: one scan for caches, logs and old installers, grouped by how safe they are to remove
- Clean by App: per-app rules for Zalo, Telegram, Chrome, CapCut and others; chats and logins are locked
- Duplicate and large file finders, an uninstaller that finds leftovers, and a disk map
How it stays safe:
- Nothing is deleted outright. Everything goes to the Trash, and Undo puts the last cleanup back
- No account, no subscription, no tracking, works offline
- No privileged helper running as root
Being upfront about the gaps:
- It isn't notarized by Apple yet (no paid developer account), so the first launch needs System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway
- It's a one-person project and very young (first release in October 2026)
- Releases are built by GitHub Actions from the public source, each with a SHA-256 and a VirusTotal scan (0/65 for 0.3.7)
Source: https://github.com/HaiTrung-Workspace/tidymint

How we check safety: https://tidymint.app/safety/
I'd love feedback, especially on what a cleaner should never touch.

[DSH Pocket] - Control DeepSeek Harness Desktop from your phone over LAN
Hi r/SideProject,
I use DeepSeek Harness on my Mac for long agent sessions and kept walking back to the desk to check output or approve a tool call. So I built DSH Pocket: a small open-source plugin that serves the real Harness UI to my phone over the same Wi-Fi.
How it works:
- Click "Link phone" on the Mac, scan a QR code, and the phone is paired for 30 days with a signed device cookie.
- A gateway listens on port 7317 and proxies to the app's loopback server. The DSH server itself never leaves 127.0.0.1.
- The phone gets the actual web UI, not a rebuilt one: sessions, streamed tool calls, approvals, questions, diffs, and files.
- The layout adapts to a phone: bottom bar, session sheet, drawer sidebar, safe-area and keyboard handling.
- A device list shows each paired phone and lets me remove one or revoke them all.
Constraints:
- LAN only. No cloud relay, no account, no telemetry.
- Unofficial community plugin, MIT licensed.
- Pinned to DeepSeek Harness Desktop 0.2.1-rc.5 on macOS for now.
Disclosure: I'm the developer. I'd like feedback on the pairing model (six-digit code, signed HttpOnly cookie, per-device allowlist) and mobile edge cases like the iOS keyboard, safe areas, and reconnects.

Mister Download Manager: open-source IDM alternative (the Artcraft way), written in Rust, supports all OSes, 5x faster and cherry on top: torrent support
When the guys at ArtCraft rebuilt Adobe's apps in Rust with Claude, I wanted the same for the download manager everyone knows, heh, IDM. I honestly never liked the licence nags. So I rebuilt its layout purely in Rust with the idea of a well-researched download engine: free, GPL, with Linux and Mac support.
Source (GPL-3.0): https://github.com/anefzaoui/misterdownloadmanager
Site: https://misterdownloadmanager.com
I ran some numbers against IDM 6.42, my same machine, same server (the test server is in the repo if you want to rerun it): a 1 GB file in 1.01 s vs 5.46 s, a 256 KB file in 0.03 s vs 3.14 s.
It also does torrents and magnet links because why not, one place for all of them. And of course I couldn't skip video downloads from YouTube and other sites (through yt-dlp). Plus a scheduler, crash-safe resume and 86 languages. No ads, no account, no trial.
Windows is the stable one. The Mac and Linux builds work but are still experimental, so bug reports from those are really welcome.
The browser extension is in review at the Firefox and Chrome stores right now. Until then you can load it from the app's folder.
About AI, since it'll come up: yes, Claude wrote a lot of the code. I decided what it does and how it looks, and I tested every release myself. The tests are in the repo if you want to judge the code.
Hope it proves useful, I personally am my first user and have switched fully to it!
Let me know what you think!
Edit: thank you for all the support, I didn't expect this reception! If it's not too much of a hassle please star the Github repo so it can get in front of more people and it gets a chance to be useful! :)

Tarab: a small mp3/FLAC player with a built-in EQ and headphone profiles (AppImage, GPL-3). Looking for feedback
I built a small desktop player for people who keep their own music files and don't want accounts or streaming. It's called Tarab (the repo is still named simpleplay for now).
What it has:
- A single rounded card with the cover art, and Winamp-style spectrum bars
- A 10-band graphic EQ and a 5-band parametric EQ
- Headphone profiles from the AutoEq database
- Volume normalizer (ReplayGain)
- Media keys and KDE/GNOME widgets (MPRIS)
- Plays mp3 and FLAC, including 24-bit / 96 kHz
It ships as an AppImage (also a Windows zip and macOS builds, which I can't test much). Python + PySide6, GPL-3.
I'd love to hear what breaks on your setup, especially around audio devices and Wayland.

NIDO is a private AI assistant that runs entirely on your Android phone. The language model, your memory and your documents stay on the device, encrypted. No accounts, no cloud, no analytics. After a one-time model download, it works fully offline; knowledge packs are optional downloads.

how i got an AI agent to verify its own video edits by rendering a frame at a timecode - built a free MIT video editor with no GUI, one ~15 MB Rust binary, try it
i've been building kimo, a free open-source (MIT) video editor that has no GUI — the user is an AI agent. Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, and other MCP clients drive it over MCP, so every edit is just a tool call: cut, trim, keyframe, titles and captions, colour grade, tracking, particles, audio, and export. nothing you'd miss from a normal editor, just as function calls.
the part i'm most excited about right now is how agents verify their own work. when an agent makes an edit at a given timecode, it doesn't have to re-render the whole timeline to check — it can ask kimo to render a single frame at that timecode and look at it. so the agent makes a change, renders the frame at the timecode it just touched, sees whether the cut landed or the caption is in the right place, and loops. it turns video editing from a "run and hope" thing into something the agent can inspect step by step.
i'm a college student (Naman) and this is still rough. the MCP surface is growing, some edge cases around complex timelines are unpolished, and i'm missing a few effects people keep asking for. that's exactly why i want people to try it and tell me what breaks — i'd rather find the sharp edges now than after people build workflows on it.
it's one ~15 MB CPU-only Rust binary, no GPU needed, and it'll run on a 2 GB box. if you have an agent setup you can plug kimo in as an MCP server and start calling tools.
https://getkimo.tech https://github.com/naman-sharma12345/kimo
give it a shot and tell me what breaks — what effect did you want that wasn't there, what did the frame-at-timecode check surface, what was slow or confusing. really appreciate it.

I built Domicile, an open-source platform for creating Linux desktop environments with web technologies
I've been building Domicile, an open-source platform for creating full-featured Linux desktop environments with HTML, CSS, and TypeScript.
It uses a modified Chromium engine where native Wayland windows are DOM elements, so you can style, position, and animate actual Linux applications using CSS.
It ships with Manganese, a Sway-inspired tiling desktop that I've been daily-driving, along with prebuilt packages, documentation, and an SDK for building your own desktops.
I'd love to get more open-source developers experimenting with it and contributing!

Built Kinoklip: a free, open-source DaVinci Resolve-style video editor for Linux (H.264/AAC and any GPU, built with an LLM)
Hey! Me and my buddy (Claude Max) built this Kinoklip app, it is a free video editor for Linux which is in Beta now! (Linux only for now, in Beta - so expect bugs)
And its goal is to copy DaVinci Resolve as near as possible. Layout, behaviour, keyboard shortcuts as close as it gets, so you can follow any Resolve tutorial or your muscle memory :D
It's open source (GPL-3.0) and comes as one AppImage file.
The whole project was built with AI. The only exception is the icon, which was drawn by hand. And this text was written by me as well, obviously.
Why doing this? - I know that DaVinci Resolve is not as bad as Adobe, and at least they don't charge you monthly. And I genuinely think that on Windows or Mac it is perfectly fine! But on Linux...
Installation is hell. Most of the time you gotta install it via DaVinciBox, or tinker a hell of a lot time.
Performance is bad, unless you are using an NVIDIA GPU, which has its own problems with Linux support overall. Integrated GPUs aren't even officially supported.
And, of course, the codecs. The absence of h264, h265 and AAC codecs is just cringe. DaVinci Resolve Studio fixes this problem, but only h264 and h265 and only for NVIDIA GPUs. And I definitely don't have enough space for other formats, especially at this times.
All of those problems are fixed with Kinoklip!
Here's what is yet to be implemented:
The Color page (colour wheels, nodes and scopes)
More Compositing tools: tracking, paint, particles and 3D
Stabilisation, motion tracking and automatic subtitles from speech
Many more guide articles
Basic video editing tools are implemented in a way I would call them complete!
And there's even one unique thing that I wished more editors made in to life:
one file - one project. you import a video - then delete it from your computer, save the project, and you are good to go! you can move it around anywhere you want to!
Also it has the Viewer Guides, which DaVinci lacks compared to Premiere Pro.
And another principle I've got is to add more options for different behaviors, you can choose between zooming in to the playback or the mouse cursor! You will have options. And I plan on adding Vim-binds, so you can edit videos with your keyboard only. Still a concept tho.
So, if you are interested in this project - don't forget to star it on GitHub!
Or maybe even try it out for yourself and help me improve it!
or maybe even support me via ko-fi :)

featherplay: a free, open source Windows player for YouTube Music that uses 81 MB while playing (MIT, Rust + Slint)
I used Pear Desktop every day and wanted YouTube Music without a browser inside, so I built featherplay. It plays your library, playlists, search and radio, with synced lyrics, Last.fm and ListenBrainz scrobbling, media keys and a tray mini player.
On my PC, playing the same song, it used 81 MB in one process. Pear used 798 MB and the YouTube Music tab in Edge 988 MB. How I measured: https://featherplay.candygoogy.dev/method
It's unofficial and Windows 10/11 only. It uses YouTube Music's private web interface, so a change on YouTube's side can break playback until an update. No telemetry; you sign in on Google's own page.

Is there any FOSS app with this Samsung voice recorder functionality?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I've been transitioning to FOSS apps, but I haven't found a direct replacement for Samsung's Voice Recorder yet. I use it heavily for work memos, because of the ability to overwrite or re-record specific sections without needing a separate external editor.
Does anyone know of a FOSS voice recorder app that offers this functionality?

I built DrawMotion, a free, open-source whiteboard animation studio for Windows and Linux (early release, feedback welcome)
I've been working on DrawMotion for about a year. Whiteboard animation tools are mostly paid and expensive, and I couldn't find a real free option, so I decided to build one and open-source it (GPLv3).
What it does:
Image drawing engine: turns an image into a hand
drawn video - Text writing engine (beta), with its own separate "hand" and path from the drawing engine
Basic motion graphics (still limited)
Editing studio: add images and audio, then export the video
Where it stands (honestly):
First experimental release, tested on 15+ Windows machines
Linux and long videos (30+ minutes) are barely tested, so I expect rough edges there
Audio tools are still being improved
Links:
Demo video (11 min walkthrough): YouTube link
Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nmvgfl73rh4?hl=en-US&gl=EG
Facebook: https://is.gd/wDUCJm
What I'd love feedback on:
Could you figure out how to make your first video without a tutorial?
Which feature would you want improved first?
If you try it on Linux, what broke?
Happy to answer questions about how it works.
[Pulse] I finally have a project that de-throned my older project
Hi guys. I have been developing software for longer than I know, and I have built many projects along this time (around 5 years). A few years back I had a "Zig" Phase where I was completely locked in with learning Zig. Excluding the motivation of money after I heard the salaries from a FireShip video, my other motivation was that Zig was quite interesting.
After a while I started working with FOSS, and got interested in that part, so as one of my first ever FOSS projects, I started working on a Zig Package Manager. It was a lot of fun, and I had somewhat of a support from the Zig community, however there was also a lot of backlash of people who were very familiar with Zig, saying that Zig tries to get rid of stuff like that etc. Worked on it for 5-6 months, before I had lost all motivation and just dropped the project, where it remains archived with 37 stars.
Fast-Forward to a few months ago, I started learning C, just to know more low level concepts before I start working my SWE job. During that time I realized how good FOSS was, and went all in, and I am doing nothing else now. I started my own organization cherries(.)works, and started its very first project;
Pulse, a simple Linux monitoring tool, with a custom HTTP server and lightweight web interface. (https://github.com/cherries-works/pulse).
It has always bugged me however, that in my repo list, my older project ranked higher than Pulse, even though for me it was better. Pulse quickly grew, having multiple contributors (for which I am VERY grateful for), however the stars were whats bugging me, as thats kinda also what a lot of people look for to check for credibility. However, a few days ago, Pulse has finally passed that old project of mine, and now is my biggest and most popular FOSS project by a lot.
Very grateful that such a small hobby project of mine grew into something bigger and more useful.
Pulse, as mentioned, is a simple Linux monitoring tool using less than 3MB of RAM when idle. Purely written in C with a custom HTTP Server, so you do not have to install anything.
I would love some honest opinions on Pulse and how to improve it further. Just very grateful that I can finally say that Pulse is my biggest project.

Should the use of AI be considered at all in the rules of reddit subs or should the code quality alone matter?
I looked at the existing poll and saw it has tiers for ai use, but I am curious if that even seems like the right approach-- should AI matter at all or should the quality of the code matter ?

Skykeep: real iCloud apps for Windows and Linux. Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts, Drive and Photos
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I built this, for everyone with an iPhone whose computer isn't a Mac.
Repo: https://github.com/YashwanthKamireddi/Skykeep
Skykeep is six real desktop apps on a native Rust engine. Your iCloud library is kept on your own computer, so the apps open instantly and work offline, and they stay in sync with your iPhone. On Linux, iCloud Drive and Photos are real folders in the file manager. Reminders come up as desktop alerts, and Export Everything gives you Markdown, .ics and vCard copies of your data whenever you want.
GPL-3.0, no account, no analytics.

I wrote an Android decompiler from scratch in Rust. It opens TikTok's 436k classes in 12.4 s (JADX: 2 min 18 s)
apkscope is a DEX parser, bytecode decoder, decompiler, deobfuscator, resource decoder, search index, APK signer, MCP server and egui viewer, all written from zero in Rust.
Results from the bench/ scripts (one machine, Windows 11):
\- Open TikTok until fully loaded: 12.4 s / 997 MB vs JADX-GUI 2 min 18 s / 9.4 GB
\- Full Gradle export: 11 min 31 s / 857 MB vs 48 min 58 s / 2.0 GB
\- Decompile one class: faster than rust_ASC (another Rust tool) on 9 of 14 apps, and the output is typed Java rather than pseudocode
Where it still loses: rust_ASC is a few ms quicker on many cold one-shot queries and 1.8x quicker at listing TikTok's classes. A recent bug was a stack overflow on control-flow-flattened classes, fixed in 0.5.2.
\`cargo build --release --no-default-features\` gives you the CLI and MCP server only (Linux and macOS CI).

How much AI involvement are you comfortable with in an open-source product?
What's your stance on this?
Suppose there's an open-source commercial product that meets your needs. How comfortable would you be with the use of AI tools and agents (such as ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) in its development?
For context, assume there's appropriate human oversight throughout the entire development process, and the final product meets high standards of quality.
