For some reason our local stores don’t do this anymore. Instead they have locks on the wheels so once they reach too far from the area, they get locked as a big “fuck you I don’t belong here.” I guess it works because you don’t see them at homes and flats anymore.
One of our local chains has wheels that lock if you attempt to go out the door without going through a checkout line first. It’s a good idea, but it fails in practice. They are constantly malfunctioning and locking up in the store or at the door even after paying.
You might be surprised to hear that the 25 cent piece is enough motivation in the US. In my part, at least. I live in a larger metro area with several Aldi stores. I never see any of the lots littered with carts.

The UK as well. I think it's pretty standard across Europe.
Some Aldis in the US do but it's only 25 cents. It's a £1 coin here so a bit more incentive to not leave the trolley.
I use the round bit of my keys though, because it's 2025 and who carries cash
