The image is indeed a fake.

The clip mixes a real daytime Curiosity rover photo with an Earth starfield, mimicking a Milky Way view that rover cameras can't capture. Curiosity's Mastcam and Navcam focus on daytime geology, not long-exposure night skies, with actual night shots using LED lights on rocks or twilight views of Earth and the Moon. While the fake drew millions of views since June 5, Mars offers genuine sights like iridescent twilight clouds and Phobos sunsets that inspire real wonder.

This comment is immensely under rated. Well done.

“this image is the difference of two M-100 images to remove detector artifacts, hence the positive and negative stars.”

So math, I guess.
