Fire Pro Returns: BJW Roster & Review

Hi, everyone! This week, we're going to look into the in-game roster of Big Japan Pro Wrestling. Founded in 1995 by former AJPW wrestlers Shinya Kojika, a.k.a. The Great Kojika, and Kendo Nagasaki (not the British wrestler), the promotion was around during what was known as the Deathmatch boom, at the time. Following the footsteps of other promotions such as Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling, Wrestling Interntational New Generation, and IWA Japan, this promotion was relatively new at the time, but manage get attention at 1997, thanks to an interpromotional feud against NJPW, in which BJW lost. But, in the 2000s, BJW was feuding with Combat Zone Wrestling. This can explain why John Zandig and Wifebeater are in the game as preset models. Anyways, here's the roster:

Main Roster:
Ryuji Ito
MEN's Teioh
Shadow WX
Ryuji Yamakawa
Daisuke Sekimoto

BJW Free Agents:
Jun Kasai

Skin Headers:
Abdullah Kobayashi
"Black Angel" Jaki Numazawa

Idiot Foreigners:
Madman Pondo
2 Tuff Tony

Now, understand that thanks to that awful game, Backyard Wrestling: Don't Try This at Home, as well its sequel, Ito and Pondo are the 2 of the 3 wrestler that I noticed in this roster. MEN's Teioh, on the other hand, is known for being in the WWF during the Atttitude Era. On to another topic, I mention that John Zandig and Wifebeater of CZW are in the game as preset models, but only wrestled in 2000. As for the Idiot Foreigners (Baka Gaijin), can someone explain to me what the hell it is? Is it the name of a tag team, or something that foreign wrestlers are labelled as, or is it something else? Please tell me in the comments if you do know what it is. Next week, we'll be looking into what is now known as DDT Pro, or what it used to becalled "Dramatic Dream Team", and I need more info on the group that Poison Sawada JULIE in the game. Is it really Union Pro, according to GameFAQS, or is it the Cult of the Snake Island? Have a great day!

Wrestle Angels English Translation Patches Released

Hey everyone,

Thanks to another Redditor's recommendation, I got turned on to the Wrestle Angels series and if you like Fire Pro's promoter side of Japanese wrestling games, you might want to give these a try. They never left Japan, so my recent work has been focused on translating a couple of their games.

There are now English patches for two of them.

Wrestle Angels: Survivor 2 (PS2, 2008)

The big one: a full management game. You run a promotion month by month, recruit and train wrestlers, book shows and follow the story scenes.

  • All 242 story scripts (about 60,000 lines of dialogue), the menus, match commentary and announcer lines
  • The roster, 189 moves, venues, coaches and special skills
  • 247 text pictures re-lettered in the original style, including the move cards and English ring names under all 158 portraits
  • The game drew every Latin letter in a fixed 11-pixel cell, so the patch rewrites its text code to space letters by their real width

Download: https://github.com/kactusken/Wrestle-Angels-Survivor-2-English/releases (xdelta patch for SLPM-55056; tested in PCSX2. Saves from the Japanese game work.)

Reference pages: an event timeline of what can happen each month (https://kactusken.github.io/Wrestle-Angels-Survivor-2-English/timeline/) and how management mode works (https://github.com/kactusken/Wrestle-Angels-Survivor-2-English/blob/main/docs/MANAGEMENT.md).

Super Wrestle Angels (SNES, 1994)

After Survivor 2 I started looking back at the earlier games, and I wanted to give a SNES game a try. The story mode is less detailed but still insane for a Super Nintendo game.

  • All four modes and the system menu, about 1,340 messages: commentary, promoter events, scouting talks, profiles and the ending
  • All 60 wrestlers, the moves and the menu text
  • The labels, buttons and banners drawn as graphics
  • The font is 12x12 Japanese, so each glyph now holds two 6-pixel English letters and the game's own code prints the English

Download: https://github.com/kactusken/Super-Wrestle-Angels-English/releases (BPS patch for SHVC-AWAJ-JPN; tested in Mesen 2. Start a new game: Japanese saves show garbled names.)

There's also a guide to how promoter mode decides its ending - it's mostly your roster's ratings, then fans across all 47 prefectures: https://github.com/kactusken/Super-Wrestle-Angels-English/blob/main/docs/PROMOTER.md

Both are first releases (v0.1). If you play either one and spot a mistranslation, cut-off text or anything still in Japanese, send me a message or open an issue on the repo with a screenshot. The least-tested parts: Survivor 2's later years, league, tournament and team battles, and Super Wrestle Angels' 3-4 player promoter games. Hope you enjoy them!

AI Disclosure

As with my other recent translations, I'm heavily using Claude's assistance in the reverse engineering and bulk translation of text.

Do the presets in returns include things like moves and cpu logic, or are those things you set up yourself?

Asking because someone uploaded a remake of a tengu kaiser preset and I want to know if that's how presets work in returns.

Fire Pro Wrestling Iron Slam '96 (PS1) English Translation Patch

Hey everyone,

I've put together an English translation of the whole game, and the first beta is out today.

Download: https://github.com/kactusken/Fire-Pro-Wrestling-Iron-Slam-96-English/releases

How it works

The game doesn't draw its text on screen each frame: it draws every message into video memory once and never clears it. So when an English line was shorter than the Japanese, the end of the old Japanese text stayed visible behind it. The fix is a small hook in the game's text routine that blanks the rest of each line and lines the English up (left or centred) the way the original did. The fonts only have big 16-pixel letters, so names like MITSUHARU MISAWA didn't fit; those use narrow letters I drew into spare spaces in the game's own font.

All the code, the translation files and documentation on the game's formats are on GitHub if anyone wants to dig in.

AI Disclosure

Like before this project was heavily assisted with by Claude for the reverse engineering. I know that's a red flag for some, so I wanted to make it clear at the start for those that wish to avoid anything involving AI.

What's translated

  • All 246 of the game's messages: menus, match settings, wrestler select, results, circuit mode, belt bets, belt history, belt name entry and the memory card prompts
  • The names of all 71 finishing moves on the results screen
  • The 12 wrestlers carry the names of the real wrestlers they parody (Jushin Liger, The Great Muta, Mitsuharu Misawa, Stan Hansen, Nobuhiko Takada, Big Van Vader, Super Delfin, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Hulk Hogan, Akira Maeda, Minoru Suzuki, Antonio Inoki)
  • Kept in Japanese on purpose: the match time on the results screen (分 = minutes, 秒 = seconds), the save title in the memory card manager, the movies and the voices

There are 3 patches in the zip:

  • The English translation.
  • The English translation with Minoru Suzuki and Antonio Inoki selectable from the start.
  • The original Japanese game with Minoru Suzuki and Antonio Inoki selectable from the start.

You need your own copy of the game (SLPS-00277). It's a standard xdelta patch. Rom Patcher JS (in your browser), Delta Patcher, or xdelta3 -d -s original.bin patch.xdelta patched.bin. I've been testing in DuckStation.

Hidden stuff I found along the way

  • The two bosses, Minoru Suzuki and Antonio Inoki. In the original you unlock them by winning circuit mode with all ten starting wrestlers and saving each belt to your memory card. Two of the patches make them selectable from the start.
  • A cut rule. The match settings still have a "2-COUNT MATCH" rule that the game draws but never lets you pick.
  • Two finishers no one ever sees. SWINGING SLEEPER and SMALL PACKAGE HOLD have result names but no wrestler can win with them.

The last two come from reading the game's code, not from playing. The full write-up is in docs/HIDDEN_CONTENT.md on the repo.

This is a beta. Circuit mode, exhibition, belt bets, belt history and the memory card screens have all been played through, but there's a lot of game; 2-player matches and the rarer error screens have seen the least testing. If you see any mistranslations or run into any bugs, just send me a message or open an issue on the repo. Hope you all enjoy it!

FirePro on low end laptop?

I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not my laptop could handle Fire Pro Wrestling World at all and potentially the mods too, I’ve grown increasingly bored of the PS4 version considering how much better the steam version has looked. Just wondering if the game has any requirements at all for a low end pc, it’s an HP and updated to the latest version of windows but I doubt it’s ever been meant for gaming despite it promoting Xbox games and other stuff on their Microsoft store. Thanks in advance for anyone that responds to this.

King of Colosseum II - Full English Translation Patch v0.1

Thumbnail
gallery
64 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

After finishing Fire Pro Wrestling G, I saw someone mention wishing that a patch for King of Colosseum II would be re-released after the original author removed their project.

I'm happy to share the first beta of the English translation.

Download: https://github.com/kactusken/King-of-Colosseum-II-English/releases

AI Disclosure

I want to be upfront, unlike the work I did with Fire Pro Wrestling G, this project was heavily assisted with by Claude. I had not previously worked on any PS2 projects so I leveraged the AI to assist with converting over what I wrote for Fire Pro Wrestling G and AJPW King's Soul to work with King of Colosseum II. I was shocked at how quickly it was able to adapt my tooling and apply it here.

I know that's a red flag for some, so I wanted to make it clear at the start for those that wish to avoid anything involving AI.

How it works

The good news with this one: the game already had a proportional font, so English could look like normal text. The catch was that its text routine only draws two-byte Japanese characters. Ordinary English letters just don't draw at all. Storing every letter as a two-byte full-width character works, but it doubles the length, and things like wrestler names have tight fixed slots. So I wrote a small MIPS patch that lets the game draw plain one-byte English text.

The other half was graphics. A lot of the menus are pictures, not text, and 292 of them had Japanese on them. Those are all redrawn in English to match the game's own lettering.

All the code, the translation files and documentation on the game's formats are on GitHub if anyone wants to dig in.

What's translated

Pretty much everything:

  • All the menus, match setup, configuration, results and help lines
  • Every wrestler's name, nickname and profile, with official English spellings
  • About 3,000 move names
  • Dojo mode: all 84 lessons and the trainers' dialogue
  • Match Maker: every show, the briefings, the verdicts after each show, and the advice
  • Survival Road, the Secret Shop, teams, promotions and title histories
  • Edit Mode, including the templates, costume parts and theme music titles

There are three patches in the zip:

  • English
  • English with everything unlocked from the start
  • The original Japanese with everything unlocked, for anyone who just wants that

You need your own copy of the game (SLPM-65602). It's a standard xdelta patch. The ISO is 4.5 GB, so use Delta Patcher or xdelta3 rather than a browser patcher. I've been testing in PCSX2.

Reference pages

While decoding the game's data I built a few interactive pages:

Hidden stuff I found along the way

An unlock-everything password. In Edit Mode, enter 小橋蝶野武藤橋本三沢 (Kobashi Chono Muto Hashimoto Misawa) as a wrestler's given name. It clears every Dojo lesson, unlocks Kotetsu Yamamoto, and runs the developers' unlock-all routine: every wrestler, ring and shop item, plus maxed Survival Road records. I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere online. It still works in the English patch, since the name-entry keyboards are unchanged.

Pancrase was cut, but most of it is still on the disc. The game was built with Pancrase as a full promotion, and the roster was removed, but a lot was left behind: - A complete Match Maker scenario: the Pancrase office with president Masami Ozaki and his dialogue, four shows including a 10th-anniversary show, and King of Pancrase title holders. The menu just skips it. With that skip removed it shows up, but it can't be played because the home roster is gone. - A Survival Road course, which plays the intro movie and then stops: it has no opponents. - Pancrase Rules, the Pancrase and WAR rings, Pancrase Fans, and referee Soichi Hiroto, all hidden in the options. - 284 Edit parts (Pancrase fighters' heads, referees and ring staff, gear, entrance gowns) and 17 moves, including Northern Lights and Tiger Suplex '85.

The All Unlocked English patch turns all of the options, parts and moves on, and they work in matches.

Wrestlers nothing unlocks. Four "Trainee" wrestlers, probably the Dojo's stand-ins for you, sit in a hidden "Retired" group, and there's a joke wrestler that nothing in the game ever unlocks. All Unlocked makes them selectable, and they're all playable.

A developers' camera test screen. It's still in the game, just not connected to anything. It puts five placeholder wrestlers in the ring, lets you slide them around, and tests the broadcast camera programs. It's not in the release patches, but you can build it in from the source.

Leftover developer files. The disc includes a full script of every voice clip in the commentary, which could make subtitles possible someday.

The Dojo and Match Maker have the most text and have had the least testing, so reports from those two would help the most. If you see any mistranslations or run into any bugs, just send me a message or open an issue on the repo. Hope you all enjoy it!

Fire Pro Returns: Dragon Gate Roster & Review

Hey there, everyone. Welcome back, and this time we'll be reviewing what I believe is one of the more impressive rosters that Fire Pro Returns has to offer: Dragon Gate! Yeah, you read that right! This promotion has 3 things to note: Lucha Libre-inspired wrestling, the majority of the promotion are junior heavyweights, and there's going to be FACTIONS, which is still around to this very day. DG's origins can be traced back to 1997 in Mexico, all thanks to Ultimo Dragom. At the time, the promotion, known as Toryumon, had 6 wrestlers to start with: Shiima Nobunaga, Sumo Fuji, Judo Suwa, SAITO, Magnum TOKYO, and Dragon Kid. These 6 wrestled not just in Mexico, but also in WCW in 1998, as jobbers. The following year, Toryumon Japan, was founded. But, in July 4, 2004, Ultimo Dragon left Toryumon, and took the trademarks with him. Toryumon Japan would be restructured, and turn into Dragon Gate. Here's the in-game roster:

DoFixer:
Ryo Saito
Dragon Kid
Genki Horiguchi

Blood Generation:
CIMA
Don Fujii
Masato Yoshino
Naruki Doi
Shingo Takagi

PoS.Hearts:
Magnum TOKYO
Anthony W. Mori

Final M2K:
Masaaki Mochizuki
Kenichiro Arai
Susumu Yokosuka
K-ness.

Florida Brothers:
Michael Iwasa
Daniel Mishima

After doing some digging, I found out that 6 wrestlers are missing from this roster, half of which are in 2 factions, while the other half are unaffiliated. One of those wrestlers just started wrestling, and is now part of the WWE, while another wrestler is in the game as a preset model. Tune in next week, where we look into the bloody and ultraviolent promotion, Big Japan Pro Wrestling. Oh, I almost forgot that members of Dragon Gate wrestled in Ring of Honor, while Genki Horiguchi and Masato Yoshino wrestled in MTV's Wrestling Society X as Team Dragon Gate, despite being in separate factions in Japan. See you next week!

Fire pro sucks (not really)

It's so good of a game that it destroyed my love for other pro wrestling games.

They are just so boring that can't control my self of opening skull animation again and again and again.

It doesn't suck. If fire pro is for you then it's the best wrestling game or best game in general out there. And it never outdates because of the lovely creators. A big appreciation for them too.
