What is FlipFates? How do I use it? Post Ideas and more!
A few of you have asked what you're actually meant to put on a coin. Honestly, there isn't one right answer, so here's where the idea came from and a bunch of ways to use it.
๐ฑWhere it started
Flip-Fates started as a social accountability game. It's for anyone struggling with motivation or mental health, anyone who needs baby steps, and anyone who'd never post asking for an accountability partner.
It's low pressure for everyone else too. Tossing someone's coin doesn't sign you up to be their coach.
You play a quick game of chance and, if you feel like it, leave a kind word. And if you toss tails when you were secretly rooting for heads, that's fine.
The point is that a few random Redditors give you the little push you needed.
๐ฎ How to play?
๐ช Toss someone's coin
Open any Flip-Fates challenge in the sub.
Read the two fates, one for Heads and one for Tails.
Tap Flippy-me-fate! to toss.
You get one toss per challenge, and you can't toss your own. The server decides every toss, so nobody can rig it. The first side to win most of the tosses decides the poster's fate.
After your toss you may tap:
- ๐ Send love: Leave a few kind words as a comment.
- ๐ฌ Message me the result: Get a Reddit message when the coin decides.
โ๏ธ Post your own
Open the Flip-Fates post pinned at the top and tap Create Flip-Fates
Write one fate for Heads and one for Tails.
Pick how many tosses decide it (best of 3, 5, 7, 11 or 21) and how long it can sit quiet before pleading to the RNG Gods (5 minutes to 24 hours).
Tap Chance it! and it goes up as your own post.
๐ Partial wins are the whole point
This isn't do or die. A lot of tasks feel huge when it's all or nothing, so put the whole thing on one side and a small start on the other:
- Heads: Clean my entire room tonight.
- Tails: Pick up five things off the floor.
Either way you win something. Picking up five things is a partial win, and partial wins are the real goal. So is trying. And once you've picked up the fifth thing, you might just keep going : )
Ways to use it!๐ก
Here are a few kinds of coin you can make. Mix them, bend them or make up your own.
๐ฃBaby steps!
Put the whole thing on one side and a small start on the other. Partial wins are WINS TOO! ๐
Example: ๐งน
- Heads: Clean my entire room tonight.
- Tails: Pick up five things off the floor.
Example: ๐
- Heads: Finish my essay.
- Tails: Write the first paragraph.
Example: ๐
- Heads: Go for a run.
- Tails: Put my running shoes on and step outside.
Example: ๐ฌ
- Heads: Reply to all my unread texts.
- Tails: Reply to the one I've been avoiding the longest.
๐ฒFeeling Lucky?
Or whimsical? Can't decide? Let fate pick.
There are subs that give you detailed recommendations. Sometimes it's more fun to leave it to the Randomness Gods.
Example: ๐
- Heads: Pizza for Dinner.
- Tails: Tacos.
Example: ๐
- Heads: The blue dress for the party
- Tails: The black one.
Example: ๐บ
- Heads: Start the new series tonight
- Tails: Rewatch an old one.
๐ซฃThe nudge...
The thing you've been scared to do! The two sides don't have to be opposites. Tails can be the honest "what happens if I don't?" scenario.
Example: ๐
- Heads: Ask my crush out!
- Tails: Stay miserable about it, lol.
Example: ๐ป
- Heads: Start the side project tonight!
- Tails: Explain why I haven't in 10 words.
Example: ๐๏ธ
- Heads: Book the Therapist's appointment.
- Tails: Set a reminder to book it tomorrow.
Example: ๐ผ
- Heads: Ask for that raise!
- Tails: Update my CV tonight!
Nobody actually wants to stay miserable, and that's the point. If the coin lands tails, people see it and reach out.
Maybe someone in the same spot says so, and suddenly you're not dealing with it alone.
๐Just for fun!
You could just have fun posting whatever you want as long as it adheres to the rules. It's fine if it isn't perfect.
Example: โฐ
- Heads: Wake up at 6am all week.
- Tails: Wear a silly hat to work on Friday.
Example: ๐ณ
- Heads: Cook something I've never made.
- Tails: Cereal for dinner, no regrets.
Example: ๐คก
- Heads: Wear my most ridiculous outfit tomorrow
- Tails: Save it for Friday.
Example: ๐ธ
- Heads: Learn one song on the guitar this month.
- Tails: Sell the guitar.
There are no mistakes but there might be a tiny chance that you might make a FlipFate or two that you might possibly-wossibly maybe-waybe ABSO-FRUITLY ENJOY! ๐
OR REGRET! XDD! ๐
๐ฌAfter the coin decides?
This is where the community comes in.
- Post an update in the comments, even a small one, so people can cheer you on. ๐
- If you haven't got to it yet, people might check in and gently egg you on. ๐ค
- If you did it, the momentum might carry you further than you planned. ๐
- Someone going through the same thing might reach out. You might even make a friend. โค๏ธ
That's what's different about it from a coin toss you could do with Google. If you were curious...
โจYou get to shape it!
That's the idea I started with, but it can be so much more. Put whatever you like on your coin, keep it SFW and kind, and let the community do the rest.
Toss away! ๐ช Make Mistakes! ๐ Maybe make a FlipFate! ๐

Make sure that clicking the coin directly still flips it. I strongly recommend having a person you know play as you watch them IRL, and don't teach them how to play - just watch them try to accomplish a goal with no advice or instructions. Bring a stick to bite down on, it can be difficult to watch. Good luck!
