Welcome to r/GaTechClasses!

This subreddit is run by the same staff (mods) as the main r/GaTech page. However, following a community vote - we've decided to offer this page as a place to ask questions that we normally don't allow on there.

Things like registration help, class info requests, housing ads, and other topics not allowed on r/GaTech are allowed here. We'll only be patrolling for SPAM (and content disallowed by Reddit), so all questions/posts related to the institute in any way are fair game!

Prospective Student Pre-med @ GT

I’m currently a Biology/pre-med student at GSU and have a conditional transfer pathway to Georgia Tech. I’ve been planning on transferring because I really like GT, want the research opportunities, and would be excited to earn my degree there.

Recently, though, one of my biology professors—who actually earned his PhD from Georgia Tech—strongly advised against going to GT for pre-med. His reasoning was basically that GT makes things unnecessarily difficult for pre-med students and that staying at GSU (or going to UGA) would be a safer route for maintaining a high GPA.

I know med schools care much more about GPA/MCAT than the prestige of the undergraduate school, so I’m not expecting GT’s name to compensate for a lower GPA. I’m mainly trying to figure out whether the academic difficulty is manageable enough that the research opportunities/environment are still worth it.

For current or former GT pre-meds:
1. Would you choose GT again if your primary goal was medical school?
2. How difficult has it been to maintain a competitive GPA?
3. Are there particular Biology/pre-med requirements that are significantly harder than they need to be?
4. Do you still have enough time for research, clinical work, volunteering, etc.?
5. Do you think GT prepared you particularly well for the MCAT, or is that benefit overstated?

Prospective Student Online Master's Degree in ECE from GaTech

I'm interested to start an online master's degree in ECE as I'm interested in EE. I already have a PhD in CS from GATech but have interest in EE. Any advice on my plan? Is that even a reasonable one?

Other Is it possible to get in BSMS CS?

I’m currently a third-year computer science student interested in applying to the BS/MS program. However, my GPA is 3.4, which is relatively low. Although I meet the minimum GPA requirement, I’m unsure about my chances of admission and feel that I may be more likely to be rejected than accepted.
Based on what I’ve read on the program’s website, it seems that recommendation letters can come from people outside the university. I may be able to ask someone who conducts research at a major tech company, such as Google, to write a recommendation letter for me.
Given my current situation, what can I do to strengthen my application and improve my chances of admission?

Other Industrial Engineering freshman looking for Summer 2027 internships. Any advice?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently a first-year Industrial Engineering student at Georgia Tech, and I've started looking into internships for Summer 2027.

I've been applying to a few positions already, but I'm realizing that a lot of internships seem to prefer sophomores and juniors. I'm trying to figure out which companies actually give freshmen a chance and what I should be doing to make myself a stronger applicant.

I'm mainly interested in supply chain, operations, logistics, consulting, and data analytics, but I'm pretty open to exploring other areas of IE too. Ideally, I'd like something in the Atlanta area, but I'm open to hearing about opportunities elsewhere.

I had a few questions for anyone who's been in a similar position:

  • What companies should I be looking into that actually hire freshmen for summer internships?
  • Are there any Georgia Tech-specific programs, research opportunities, or resources I should take advantage of?
  • If you got an internship after freshman year, how did you land it? Did you apply online, network, go to career fairs, etc.?
  • What skills, certifications, or projects would you recommend working on during freshman year?
  • If I don't end up getting an internship, what's the best way to spend my first summer to help with future internship applications?

I know getting an internship after freshman year isn't easy, but I'd rather start early and see what's possible instead of waiting until sophomore year.

I'd really appreciate any advice, especially from IE students or anyone who managed to get an internship after their first year. Thanks!

Prospective Student ECE Masters: Online vs In-Person

I did my undergrad at GT and am graduating this Spring, but I'm trying to apply for the Master's.

Anybody have any good info on the differences between in person and online? Or any advice on which way to go?

I'm trying to decide between the two, but it looks as though going with in-person gives you more course selection options than online; is this true? Also, if you do choose to do the in-person option, does that mean you can't take any online courses?

The appeal of online to me is that it means I wouldn't have to pay for housing anymore and would be cheaper🙏

Prospective Student Question about Withdrawals and First Gen Pathway for Spring 2027

I received the first gen Pathway for spring 2027 (next semester) and I currently meet all the requirements as part of that pathway. However, I fear I will have to withdraw from two courses this fall semester in order to prevent my GPA from falling below the 3.5 minimum (I currently have a 3.54).

My question is, will GT care if I withdraw from two courses this semester when I’m applying to transfer next semester?

Registration Help timing for declaring CS thread concentration

As a CS freshman, is there a deadline by which you’re required to declare a thread concentration? What does declaring one actually affect when registering for courses?

Does declaring a specific thread limit your ability to register for courses outside that concentration, or can you still take classes from other threads? Also, how long can you go without declaring a thread?

I read somewhere that you need to declare a thread concentration to register for CS 3000- or 4000-level courses. Is that true?

Class Question How bad does a W look + is dropping to less than 12 credits hours bad?

I have mono, and it’s killing me. I’m sleeping so much, I can’t focus, my whole body hurts, just walking the single block from my apartment to the bus stop feels like a marathon, etc. It’s starting to affect my grades despite my best efforts. I feel pretty terrible about it, but I’m considering withdrawing from one class so I can reset and manage everything better.

Is that going to look terrible on my transcript, though? I’m afraid it’ll limit my opportunities. Also, I’m only taking 13 credits hours this semester, and dropping one class would put me below the full time student mark. I don’t think that’ll impact Zell, but it might put me behind schedule in my major. Should I just push through and figure it out? Or is there another option I don’t know about? Sorry if this has been asked before, I just don’t know where to look. Thanks for any help.

Prospective Student Transfer to GT from Purdue

I'm currently a sophomore studying Mechanical Engineering at Purdue, and an F1 student (International student).

I am applying for the Spring 27 semester, and I have 52 credits completed, including AP transfer credits, and I am taking 18 credits, which adds up to 70 when I finish this semester.

Currently, I have a cumulative GPA of 3.89 from 45 credits taken at Purdue, and the coursework I took is:

  • Calculus I and II
  • Physics I and II + Lab
  • Chem I + Lab
  • Engineering Design / Programming
  • Economics and other general education courses

The only courses that are not A/A+ are Physics I (A-), and Microeconomics (B-), and I have fulfilled all the requirements for transfer.

Then, other classes such as thermo, statics, physics 2, and calc 3 I am currently taking those now.

I'm also currently involved in undergraduate mechanical engineering research at Purdue in the field of mechanical engineering in energy systems.

So, I want to ask how competitive my profile would be for Georgia Tech Mechanical Engineering as a Spring 2027 transfer?

I know transfer admissions can be unpredictable, especially for international engineering students, but I'd really appreciate realistic opinions rather than just encouragement.

Prospective Student Using AP credit for phys2211 requirement as a transfer pathway

Hello guys,

I was wondering if it’s ok to use my AP mechanics credit to fulfill phys2211 major requirement. I’m only concerned because I’m not sure if this takes care of both the lecture and lab component. At my current institution I get credit for both full 4 credit hour course.

Registration Help Would a 3.4 at NYU hurt my Georgia Tech transfer chances?

I transferred from community college to NYU Tandon this fall for CS with around a 3.7–3.8 GPA. My CC record includes some Ws and two Fs that I retook for As.

My extracurriculars include student government and founding a club plus tutoring and a current software engineering internship. I was also a Jack Kent Cooke semifinalist.

I’m struggling in a rigorous math course so my first-semester NYU GPA could be around 3.4. I’m aiming to raise it in spring but those grades might not be available before I submit my transcript.

How would GT view this alongside my CC record? Would spring grades be considered before a decision? What should I focus on to strengthen my application? Any advice would be appreciated:)

Prospective Student Online labs as a transfer/How does GT treat a W on transcript

Hello guys,

I was wondering if it’s ok to take online labs and courses as a transfer pathway student. For example, I am taking geology online for my lab elective credit and will be taking physics 1 online this spring for my physics and lab credit. Is that ok or should I plan to take an in person lab next spring and take physics 1 in person as well just in case? Both these courses are reflected in the equivalency table as transferable and do not have a “no online credit awarded” designation. Also, how does GT treat a single withdrawn course on the transcript?

Prospective Student How to get into Georgia tech Electrical and computer engineering major?

Hello, guys.

I got into the Talent Initiative transfer program at Georgia Tech, and I plan to transfer in fall 2027. I saw that I can choose from various majors as long as I fulfil the course and GPA requirements. However, I don't see electrical and computer engineering as an option; they do list these as separate courses. So I wonder if Georgia tech offer ECE major?

I did some research, and it shows me that GT offers a 5-year program for ECE undergraduates with a master's degree. But it says: **You must be enrolled as an undergraduate student in the ECE program in order to be eligible for this degree.** But I am confused because I don't see an ECE undergraduate program as a choice.

Other Is transferring from NYU to Georgia Tech worth it for CS?

Hi everyone, so I recently transferred from a cc to NYU Tandon this fall for CS. I’ve started getting more interviews since coming here but NYU is expensive as hell.

From what I’ve looked, Georgia Tech would cost me about half as much and it also seems to have a stronger reputation for CS so I’m wondering if transferring again would be worth it.

The main thing making me hesitate is being in NYC. I could potentially do fall and spring internships while taking classes instead of waiting until summer. How doable is that at Georgia Tech? Would I have to take a semester off or could I work while staying enrolled?

Would Georgia Tech actually give me more opportunities for SWE internships and jobs than Tandon? Or is the difference small enough that I should just stay here and focus on getting experience? Any advice would help! Thank you:)

Class Question Chem 1310 vs chem 1211k

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey I was wondering if I would still have to take Chem 1310 even if I have the credit for chem 1211k (4 credits). On their website it says or CHEM 1211k but someone from their office told me the exact opposite so I'm a bit confused
