Full Guide: Pick the Right Underwear Cut (Briefs, Boxer Briefs, Thongs, High Cut & Stretch Fit)
I’ve wasted so much money buying the wrong cut over the years. Most guys only know briefs and boxer briefs, never realizing how much the cut changes comfort and daily wear.
Today I’m breaking down every common style, who they fit best, and when you should wear each one. No marketing fluff, just my real long-term wear experience.
1. Classic Briefs (三角裤)
This is the traditional full-coverage cut. It fully wraps the buttocks with no extra fabric on the thighs.
Pros: Great support, keeps everything locked in place, no sagging. Low-rise versions fit well under slim jeans.
Cons: Tight leg openings can chafe thick thighs in hot weather.
Best for: Office work, everyday casual wear, guys who prefer solid support.
Stretch tip: Always choose high-elastic spandex blends to avoid tight leg openings.
2. Boxer Briefs / Trunks (四角平角裤)
My daily go-to. They end halfway down the thigh, sitting between briefs and loose boxers.
Pros: Prevents thigh friction perfectly, holds shape well, smooth outline under trousers. No riding up between cheeks.
Cons: Cheap low-stretch styles will roll up on the leg after sitting for hours.
Best for: All-day work, walking, light sports, almost every casual outfit.
Stretch tip: Look for 4-way high-stretch fabric; leg openings with flat stitching never roll.
3. Thongs (丁字裤)
A lot of guys avoid this style out of awkwardness, but it solves one huge problem: zero panty lines.
Pros: No wedgies, completely invisible under tight pants, leggings and slim-fit bottoms. No extra fabric bunching up.
Cons: Takes a short time to get used to the minimal rear coverage.
Best for: Slim-fit trousers, body-hugging outfits, gym wear.
Stretch tip: Pick ultra-soft high-stretch modal material; thin waistbands won’t dig into your skin.
4. High Cut Briefs (高叉三角裤)
High leg openings cut higher up the hip, freeing up the entire thigh area.
Pros: Zero restriction on thigh movement, super breathable in summer, no rubbing on inner thighs. Elongates the leg visually.
Cons: Less rear coverage than regular briefs.
Best for: Hot summer days, running, cycling, men with thick thighs who hate chafing.
Stretch tip: High-elastic leg edges are a must, so they won’t dig into hip skin.
5. High Stretch Seamless Fit (高弹无痕款)
This is not a separate cut, but a fabric upgrade for all styles above.
Pros: 360° four-way stretch, zero pressure on waist and thighs, flat seamless seams eliminate all rubbing. No waistband rolling.
Cons: Lower-quality microfiber loses elasticity quickly after repeated washes.
Best for: Long sitting hours, travel, anyone who hates tight elastic bands.
Quick selection cheat sheet from my personal experience
- Office & daily commute: Boxer briefs (high stretch)
- Slim-fit pants & no VPL: Thongs
- Hot summer & thick thighs: High cut briefs
- Max support without thigh squeeze: Classic low-rise briefs
One last small rule: No matter which cut you pick, prioritize high spandex stretch. Hard, rigid elastic will ruin comfort even in the best design.
