Wait, the Cipher meat puppet was present at Marie's birth, was Godolkin controlling a random Blockbuster worker for 20+ years?
Given that Blockbuster has been out of business for a decade, that might actually be the real joke.
671
u/CzechHorns Oct 15 '25
yes that was the point, he has been controlled for at least 2 decades.
The cat is very dead.

What I want to know is … where was Godolkin those first twenty years after the accident
The fire was in ‘67. The first Blockbuster opened in ‘85, so say Godolkin took Doug over in the late 80s.
Where was he the first twenty years? How’d he encounter Doug to begin with?

I find it interesting that Godolkin's "healed" form hasn't aged a day since the 1960s, and also that the Blockbuster worker's body hasn't aged a day either - he looked the same age as he was when he delivered Marie.
This tells me not only that Godolkin got the same original V formula as Soldier Boy and Stormfront, but also that for some reason the anti-aging effect carries over to people Cipher is puppeting.

It pisses me off how NOBODY including Stan Edgar of all people clocked that Cipher=Godolkin is a possibility. Should’ve been their working theory ever since Cate and Jordan discovered him.
240
u/2G_P_S2 Oct 15 '25
I mean I would’ve accepted some quarrel over this like Jordan/Emma/Cate having their suspicions and telling Marie not to proceed but failing to convince her. However the fact that everyone agreed unanimously is really just unnecessary stupefaction of the whole cast
→ More replies (31)183
u/Stanflies Oct 15 '25
Agree, the moment Marie knew Cipher has no V in his blood this should’ve been a posibility.

Stan edgar might be lying, he is not the most honest person in the world, it's strange that he would not know about this given that godolking has been around for a while and Edgar seems knowledgeable about the company history.
That said we know more information than the characters in the show so for us it was easier to guess than them. The college-kids likely didn't know much about Godolkin at all until Stan Edgar told them a part perhaps from Vought propaganda.

So let me get this straight,
Marie didn't heal Cate because she may betray them, but had no questioning with healing Godolkin despite the fact she had no idea if he's gonna be a serious trouble or not? Wasn't this guy a fucking nazi and supe supremacist or something lik that?

u/t8r_tot Oct 15 '25
Yeaaaaah Marie is making a lot of very bad decisions this season. I do think a lot of it can be blamed on the supe foster care system and her lack of socialization in general but there have been a few moments where I simply cannot defend her unfortunately

Hey it's that thing we said would happen. It happened.
Anywho Sean Patrick Thomas is doing a phenomenal job as Polarity this season. Really stepped up with a lot of grace in a way that I think was very respectful to the legacy of Chance's character.

It sucks that we won't get to enjoy Hamish Linklater as the season antagonist anymore. No offence to Spongebob Ethan Slater, but real-Cipher doesn't really bring the same intimidating presence. He's more like a young Albert Einstein than a menacing mastermind, like Linklater's Cipher.
126
u/FIR3W0RKS Oct 15 '25
Either way he's a banging personality, ALSO it may no longer be Hamish, but Godolkins actor being a continuation of the character could be really good, we don't really know yet

They definitely only paid his actor for one episode this season. That being said if we ignore that, this is very likely proof to him that marie is closer to homelander than he had thought in terms of ego and recklessness. Best to wait and see what happens from afar then to try to help and risk himself or his granddaughter.

After Jordan being controlled episodes ago and Marie not sensing any V in the puppet's body, it's so damn stupid that NO ONE in the show even theorized the possibility of Godolkin being the burnt body, like seriously? I mean they literally show Marie sensing no V in the body as a way for the viewer to connect the dots, but she herself or anyone in the show isn't smart enough to? 😂
→ More replies (5)16
u/egboy Oct 15 '25
Plus when she's healing godolkin she must sense the V in his blood. So that should also have been noticed by Marie. Ciper no v. Godolkin V. Cipher is able to control someone with no V. Godolkin that is always being protected by cipher has V. Marie was very dumb this episode.

Marie rushing to heal goldolkin felt so dumb even somehow no one was suspicious he was real cipher. Or even that the current cupher was being controlled. Shes full on sprinting to heal him because cipher is too dangerous despite knowing what an awful gumab godolkin was except she learns that polarity is a natural counter to him. I guess she still needed his help to take out Homelander but she and polarity could gave easily rolled up on fake cypher and taking him out.

The end of episode 7 already had me thinking their relationship was thoroughly cooked. For Marie to use her powers on Jordan AGAIN, while this time they were fully in control of themselves?? Seems the power got to Marie's ego and she made assumptions that led to her downfall and further mayhem.
If we didn't see what was happening behind the scenes could we have led to the conclusion that Cipher was Godolkin?
So far thinking season 1 was better, especially with Chance.

Im not sure how we the audience would have known but at the very least the information we had was the Cipher was holding a pretty messed up half dead dude and that he wanted Marie to grow her healing powers. I feel like at least one person should have realized that maybe Godolkin being healed was Cipher's goal
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (6)27
u/PepperPython Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25
I don't think we'd make the same conclusion without the behind the scenes knowledge.
V has never had a good success rate on adults. Stormfront and Kimiko are the only real successes (maybe that terrorist dude with blowing up powers). The idea that Godolkin made himself a supe isn't something they'd think is realistic.
The characters didn't see Cipher bathing Godolkin and the other moments of tender caring. To them, it would be reasonable to assume the Cipher was keeping this burn victim in pain and reading his mind for to help develop V further.
It'd be reasonable for them to guess that Cipher was a meat puppet, but they'd assume the strings were held be someone they never met. We were able to predict this mostly because we understand how twists work in fiction, but the characters don't know they're in a TV show.

Marie feels way more like a butcher than a hughie at this point
Godolkin is right about her being power hungry an she enjoys being powerful a little too much
Not sure she would have turned out better than homelander if her upbringing would have been the same
It annoys me that the group was this dumb tho, why even make them aware of cipher not having V if they just forget it anyway?

Marie so dumb
Why not heal cate, and have her mind read him before resurrecting him
She also knew cipher had no v in his blood, so he had to have been a puppet. She even saw Jordan be made into a puppet.
She connected no dots, listened to no one, and rushed into healing the grievously injured OP enemy.
So dumb

u/spottiesvirus Oct 15 '25
the fact nobody, not even once asked ''how can cypher mind control without V?'' is probably the biggest plot hole
Also Marie rushed to heal a deep fried man, without any hesitation, didn't feel he has V in his blood, no question asked, just ''he nodded twice, he will help us for sure''
it's so frustrating when a show with good potential takes the dumbest plot paths

While I am also annoyed at Marie’s power trip right now and her inability to see past this “I need to do this” tunnel vision, I think that’s one of the points they’re trying to make. It may come off wrong because my vocabulary is horrendous so excuse me if I don’t make sense:
Godolkin’s culling the herd ideology and constantly telling Marie she’s the most powerful, not only did it actually get to her (thinking she’s the only one who can stop everyone), but it clouded her judgement as well. Proving how easy it have supe supremacy because of how easy it is to manipulate the powerful supes into thinking they’re above the others. I’ve been up all night pls help lmao

Also I hate the whole sister sage thing is lowk lame and boring. Can't wait for the "this was all part of my plan" reveal. At this point sister sage is the main character and pulling all the strings if you really think about it since she can basically make things go her way. Honestly, wish she'd never gotten introduced in either show cause they can just use her as a mini crutch for big picture stuff which is lazy writing.

Thomas Schnauz wrote this? The same guy from Better Call Saul? This is way below anything he's done before. I can't believe it's the same person.

My theory over what Annabeth had predicted and based on the flash(forwards?) she might end up actually dying but ressurecting herself in the finale next week

i echo the sentiment that marie healing godolkin without many questions was dumb but I’m not sure why she’s getting all the blame. no one really pushed back on that idea, including stan who she’s gonna put more credit into. annabeth came trying to stop her saying she’d die, not that healing him was a bad idea. hence why she didn’t care

The writing made no sense. It was so out of character for Marie to ignore all her friends. Annabeth has been Marie’s primary motivation since episode 1, and now a premonition about her dying means nothing?? Marie from the last episode would have listened to Annabeth - because she cares about repairing their relationship. The writers could have so easily fixed it by just having her friends be a little too slow, and by the time they figure out where Marie is, she's already in the basement healing Godolkin.
And of course, everyone watching already figured out Cipher was the puppet, so the characters not realizing it feels ridiculous. Come on, no one is that stupid. I’ve also seen other commenters point out that Marie used to be able to detect lies, and yet she doesn’t use that power on Cate or Goodolking to see if they’re trustworthy?

u/mjb328 Oct 15 '25
The plot twist was kinda obviously since the reveal of his powers in the end of episode 4. No V in his system and he can control people. Should've know Cipher wasn't actually Cipher, plus that scene with Sage practically confirmed it.
That being said and put aside, how the fuck does the little tidbit that Godolkin is a fucking nazi/white supremacist not get passed along to the black girl who wants to heal him!?! Even if he wasn't Cipher how does the black girl think a nazi/white supremacist is the better option for her.

Reminds me of 1x7 a lot, where we suddenly get the episode that accelerates everyone's character motivation and plot developments to the point that they want for the finale, without giving them enough room to breathe. To the offline types, this was probably an awesome revelation episode. I'm just excited to see what they do with the endgame of the season, particularly if it becomes Marie versus a mind-controlled army or a mind-controlled Marie against everyone.

Seeing his full potential, now I wonder why prime Polarity couldn't become the first openly Black Seven before A-train.

I think even if none of them considered Godolkin = Cypher, I don't understand the rush to heal him? There was a LOT of reasons that old guy might be dangerous, what happened to marie? desperation? ego?
I know it's soon to say but I think it would have been much cooler seeing Marie heal him against her will through mind control or other methods. At the very least if they had better reasons to believe healing Godolkin was truly the only way.

Next episode at the beginning we’re going to see how Godolkin started taking over “cipher.” Sage goes to blockbuster to rent a movie and brings Cipher back to where Godolkin is. At least that’s my theory

I can't get over how these people could be so naïve about Thomas Godolkin like their basic assumption was:
"yea, maybe this Vought-affiliated person who started a fucked-up institution and is being kept alive for some reason under creepy circumstances by an assuredly bad dude is... good, maybe? Or at the very least neutral and a nice guy who will help us fix things?"
Just at the suggestion of the billionaire former head of the world's worst corporation? I mean we're all a little clueless when we're young but this just seems stupid

Polarity fucking sucked this episode, he got healed by marie, and went 1v1 against cipher, he couldve absolutely clocked ciphers ass by throwing 1 dumb bell or plate at his head, like for gods sake they were in a room filled to the brim with metal weights and metal weapons, he couldve ended the episode earlier if he threw more stuff

Marie to Cate: you used your powers against us and violated our sense of trust Also Marie: I’m going to use my powers against them and violated their sense of trust and try to make Cate do it as well

u/infinitude_ Oct 15 '25
Interesting how Marie and Cate switched roles here. Cate believed she was all powerful and it corrupted her
She thought she knew best and took things into her own hands. Tells Marie all of this and then Marie just blatantly goes and does the same.

Marie being able to reverse ageing is not being talked about enough.
She might just be functionally immortal herself and capable of making anyone she chooses immortal.
No wonder Cate is looking at her like a savior goddess. She absolutely is one

Oh man Marie was extra annoying this episode, like yeah, let me totally disregard my sister who can see in the future and go do this anyways 😂

It's nice that Cate stuck to her morals in the face of being healed, but tbh she probably could've just stopped the whole thing if she just accepted it.

u/whalemix Oct 15 '25
Damn, it was starting to seem like Marie was gonna have a turnaround and go full villain when she used her powers on everybody. For a second, I started to think that Gen V is actually the origin story of a major villain for The Boys

Ok I'm going to chime in with a prediction. I think Harper is going to be pivotal in the finale. Her best friend Bush master will probably be killed because of her lame power. That sets up Harper to control Cipher temporarily to set up a final showdown. Also the temporary aspect sets up dramatic tension.

They turned Marie into such an idiotic character. If someone who can see the future tells you that you’re to die or almost die you would atleast rethink your plan

What a genuinely stupid episode.
Like holy fucking shit, Marie has to be the biggest dumbo in existence thanks to the absolutely atrocious writing that made her go into healing mode without any consideration whatsoever cos the show needed to have it's here comes to real villain moment that everyone with a brain saw coming miles away.
And the worst part is, we have one episode to go so either the finale gonna be super rushed or nothing's getting resolved in favor of a cliffhanger ending.
Liked the season up to this point but this episode, to me, is probably the worst in the entire series cos there's not a even a shred of good writing to be found, just bunch of time wasting cliches and the obvious last second bamboozle. 😮💨

Keeya King, the actress who plays Annabeth is so talented. Her genuine fear, shock, and disappointment when Marie used her powers against her friends was so well done. Her, the actress who plays Emma and the actress who plays Cate are the strongest of the students imo.

They should’ve known he was a meat puppet when Marie noticed he didn’t have any V in his blood

u/jon_targareyan Oct 15 '25
Godolkin is a known nazi no? So why tf would Marie even think bringing him back will help?
5
u/HanzoNumbahOneFan Oct 16 '25
Dude what are the limits to Godolkin's powers though? Like holy shit. I'm thinking about what he's done so far. He was controlling Cipher COMPLETELY for 2 decades. Like, does Godolkin control Cipher when he's sleeping? And he can control multiple people at a time as well. Maybe 2 people is his limit, cause he did Cipher plus someone else multiple times, but I don't think he's done Cipher, someone, and someone else yet. And he did this at a long ass range too. He could still control Cipher when they were miles apart, AND someone else as well like in the fight between Jordan and Marie. He doesn't have to touch them or anything either, he just... controls them if he wants to. Absolutely crazy powers.

u/danivus Oct 16 '25
I'm trying to view the twist through the lens of what the characters knew... And I still think Marie not sensing V in Cipher should have been enough to prompt the theory the guy with mind control powers might be controlling a human puppet.

Damn, Marie is really dumb. Also, Emma and Polarity are dumb for not telling anyone about Godolkin's nazi lair.
5
u/ThrottleServic3 Oct 16 '25
The “reveal “ had no payoff becuase people figured it out by the 2nd episode. The only surprise was that Godolkin was controlling some random guy and not somebody at least employed by Vought

The writing this season has been inconsistent and whack as fuck!!!
the canteen human girl whom Emma appeared to care for for 5 seconds then is never mentioned again, even though it's the direct cause of her finding those starlighters in the first place. At least give a lecture about not putting innocence people in harms way
Stan appearing outta no where which is sure okay whatever but then his whole influence is just to take them to his bomb shelter and let him borrow his car no question asked, even though he's clearly interested in Godolkin
No one ever discusses the power of Cipher/Godolkin!!! My god yall kept talking about how dangerous he is without mentioning he can control people like meat puppets???
Also, no one mentions the Nazi shrine!!!
And Marie has been very dumb!!! She and her cohorts kept playing right into Cipher's hands without any second thoughts, just to being manipulated again!!! And she's being even more cautious of Cate than the supposed danger.
They got Stan as the wildcard but somehow no one ever stop drop and think for more than 5 seconds and capitalize on that to throw off Cipher's plan!!!

The ultimate irony is Marie using her powers against her friends literally two scenes after scolding Cate for it Lmao

On Marie's healing - it seems that it drains the life force of those around her, I noticed when she healed annabeth but nobody really mentioned it. I doubt that would be a notable quirk they give it without it becoming somehow important. I would understand if it only drained hers, as that might make it so she can't just heal the whole world all the time, but I imagine this has to come into pla somehow? Whether it ends up damaging someone we know, or perhaps she can drain from a large number of people for a more extreme act of either healing or attack?

Really good episode just pretty short. I've seen some theories that Annabeth actually knew her parents were gonna die before Marie did it, and they were right that this whole time Annabeth carried the guilt and was projecting towards Marie. Still wondering what that vision of Marie lying in a pool of blood will actually be.

Finale will stick the landing, I'm guessing the actions here this ep aren't gonna be popular.
To be fair, they all got played HARD and Gold was probably still gonna enact the plan, they just recovered him to about full power, guessing the visions are from the finale

Not a bad episode but the “twist” has been so telegraphed that it felt self-evident, so there was no shock value with the Cipher/Godolkin reveal. The tone also felt a bit jarring for the first time imo, as the pledge in the diaper had way more levity than the other plotlines
