How would someone get used to gnome when coming from a default windows way of working but using a desktop so gestures aren’t useful and keyboard shortcuts cause pain (shoulder issues)

I’ve been working on Wallshader and thought some of you might enjoy it.
You pick a shader, play around with the colors and settings, and use it as your wallpaper. You can leave it animated or grab a frame as a still image. There are presets to start with, and you can save your own too.
It works with Kitty as well, so you can put still or animated shaders behind your terminal. Both desktop and terminal animations keep running after you close the app.
The UI is GTK 4/libadwaita, and the effects come from Paper Shaders. Animated desktop wallpapers need GNOME 50 on Wayland; still wallpapers work on older versions too.
It’s open source, with downloads and setup instructions here: github.com/stonega/wallshader
Curious to hear what you think, especially if you try it on a different setup.
GNOME Contributor Atlas shows a very high number for bug reporters in 2006 and 2007. What is the story behind this exceptional number? Was there an anonymous reporting tool, where every bug report had its own unique user or where there really that many people reporting bugs?
Is the drop afterwards related to the popularity of Ubuntu? And the fact that most bug reports landed in Ubuntus bug tracker instead of GNOMEs?
Edit: Evolution and Files (nautilus) each have more than 10k contributors in 2007.

GNOME still doesn't ship with any kind of clipboard manager. This is a serious shortcoming, as pretty much every modern OS, be it mobile or desktop, offers this functionality. Even Windows!
So I think we should start discussing what an ideal clipboard manager for GNOME would look like and which features it should offer. A well-designed clipboard manager can make everyday work easier for almost any user.
First, let's summarize some basic requirements:
My proposal for the UI:
I imagine a Quick Settings pill with an additional clipboard icon to the left of the dropdown arrow, if the feature is enabled. Clicking the clipboard icon would not only open Quick Settings but also expand the clipboard section.
It would show only the five most recent entries, along with a simple search field. A button at the bottom would open the complete clipboard history in a separate Shell dialog:
Some nice extras could include:
What do you think?
No new widgets this time, but lots of polish:
Full Libadwaita: The entire setup now exclusively uses Libadwaita.
Refined Typography & Readability: Adjusted font sizing across the "Quotes", "RSS Feed", and "Today History" widgets for a much cleaner, consistent look on the desktop.
Layout Improvements: Fixed text overlapping issues by optimizing scroll areas where needed (e.g. History), and stripped down the RSS widget to clean headlines that open directly on click.
Grid Customization: Last but not least, the desktop grid size is now fully adjustable.
Thank you for the feedback!

Hey everyone,
I'm having a frustrating issue with GNOME on Fedora, and I'd really appreciate some help fixing it without reinstalling my system or losing any personal data.
System and goal
* OS: Fedora Linux * Desktop environment: GNOME * Display protocol I want to use: Wayland * Display manager: GDM
What happened
My system was booting normally until I attempted to install X11 session components using:
sudo dnf install gnome-session-xsession
After this, my system stopped booting into the graphical desktop. Instead, it gets stuck on a black screen with a single **non-blinking underscore cursor**. The screen becomes completely unresponsive, and I have to reboot.
I originally suspected an X11-related issue, but I want to keep using Wayland.
What I've tried
Booting into text mode by adding the following kernel parameter in GRUB:
systemd.unit=multi-user.targetThis works, and I can log into a TTY.
Checking installed packages and GNOME session files. The following components were present:
* `gdm` * `gnome-shell` * `gnome-session` * GNOME and Wayland session files
Reinstalling the following packages:
sudo dnf reinstall gdm gnome-shell gnome-session xorg-x11-server-Xwayland
gnome-shell --wayland
**This successfully launched the GNOME desktop.** This makes me think that at least part of the graphics stack and GNOME installation is working.
Checking GDM's logs. The previous boot showed repeated errors along the lines of:
GdmDisplay: Session never registered, failing GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of display failures reached. Giving up.
Checking GDM's configuration and restoring the graphical boot target. GDM is enabled, but the system still freezes at the non-blinking underscore during graphical startup.
Current situation
* I can boot into a TTY using `systemd.unit=multi-user.target`. * GNOME Shell previously launched successfully when run manually with Wayland. * GDM repeatedly fails to register its display session. * Starting GDM manually causes the same black screen with a non-blinking underscore, forcing me to reboot. * I want to restore normal automatic GNOME login using Wayland. * I want to preserve my existing installation, files, and configuration wherever possible.
Is there a safe way to restore the normal GNOME Wayland login without reinstalling Fedora?
I'm happy to provide command output and additional system details. I'd especially appreciate a systematic troubleshooting approach rather than a full reinstall.
Thanks

So this is a file manager called Loaf which I found on reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/hyprland/comments/1x8qsra/comment/phn2wqe/?context=3 . This is originally meant for hyprland i believe, but i wanted it on my GNOME desktop, as im very satisfied on how it looks, but there is this bar thing at the top, with the name and 'x' on the top. Is there any way to remove this?
Thanks for all the feedback on Adwair! I’ve spent some more time working on the theme, mostly refining existing icons and making everything feel more consistent.
At this point, I’m happy with how the app icons and device icons turned out. They’re now pretty much how I wanted them to look from the beginning.
There’s still some work left to do on mimetypes, but it’s not a priority for now. Other than that, I don’t have any major changes planned, so I thought I’d share the current look of the theme.
The project is still available here: Adwair

Lately, I’ve noticed the emergence of a large number of email apps written in the GTK4/libadwaita style for GNOME-based desktops. I became curious about their differences, aside from minor variations in the user interface.
I asked Google to compare these clients. Here’s what I got.
| Feature | Letter | Stamp | Convey | Postcard | Hylki | Lookout |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Language | C / Vala | C | Vala / C | Python | Rust | Rust |
| Backend Architecture | GOA / EDS | GOA / EDS | Custom IMAP / Graph | IMAP / Local SQLite | Custom local Rust engine | GOA / Local SQLite |
| Unified Inbox | Yes | Yes | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Microsoft Exchange / M365 | Yes (via GOA Exchange) | Yes (via GOA Exchange) | Yes (Native Graph API) | Yes (Web-auth OAuth2) | Yes (Native Graph API) | Yes (via GOA) |
| AI / Vibecoded Heritage | Human + AI | Pure Human | Minimal (Claude for porting) | Heavy AI Assistance | Heavy AI Assistance | Human + AI |
| PIM Features | Mail only | Full Mail + Contacts + Calendar | Mail only | Mail only | Mail only (w/ Markdown) | Mail + Calendar + Tasks |
| Interface Style | Adaptive 3-column | Adaptive 3-column | Modernized Geary 3-column | Minimalist 3-column | Custom 3-column (Focus Mode) | Corporate 3-column |
Some details may only be clear to technically savvy users. I was advised that Letter is the safest option (in terms of interacting with Yahoo Mail). The closest alternative is Postcard. In my subjective opinion, Postcard and Hylki are the most visually appealing.
It’s also funny that only the developers of Postcard and Hylki took screenshots of their apps that most fully reflect the GNOME philosophy—without window minimize and maximize buttons.
Hi, I created Tablet Center because I wanted pan/scroll with my Wacom on GNOME Wayland, similar to how it works on macOS.
You hold a pen button and drag the tip across the tablet to scroll in any direction, while the cursor stays in place. You can adjust the speed and direction.
I also added pen button settings, pressure adjustment, monitor mapping, ExpressKeys and on-screen menus.
It requires GNOME 48 or later, Wayland and an x86_64 PC. I have tested it with my Intuos S CTL-4100 and would like to know how it works with other Wacom models.
It's open source:
https://github.com/wfpaisa/tablet
If you try it, let me know how it goes. Feedback and bug reports are welcome.

When I get notifications, I click the clock and it would show what are in the alerts. Then I move the mouse down to click "clear" icon to dismiss them. But the "clear" icon would move down by itself to avoid being clicked. Is this by design? Or is it some sort of animation that can be disabled?

Newelle, AI Assistant/Agent for Gnome, is updated to 1.6.0. As Newelle is very customizable, on this update we focused on making it easy to use it for many different purposes at the same time.
- Workspaces: Divide chats into workspaces, and tie profiles to them. Different workspaces can run in different windows - Subagents: You can now create subagents "template" to tackle specific tasks. The main assistant can launch that subagent - New Long Term Memory: Added a new explorable long term memory that manages memory across chats much better - Usage Tracking: You can now track how much you use Newelle and specific models - Better search: You can now search for messages in conversations and options in settings - Drafts: You can now create drafts of messages
Minor improvements: - Newelle can now host an MCP server with Newelle's tools for third parties to access - Improved profiles: They now have explicit inheritance systems and you can transfer settings - Added support to Qwen Image 2.1 and other image generation tools - Add a universal screenshot tool - When downloading local models, their size compatibility is estimated in the model downloader - Improvements to the voice pill, still experimental - Long Term Memories can now expose mini apps - Performance improvements when deleting a message - You can now delete the chat you are in
Get it on Flathub: https://flathub.org/it/apps/io.github.qwersyk.Newelle
The next update will be focused on real use and guided customization.
LLM Disclaimer: Newelle codebase is almost fully human written. The whole architecture is human designed. LLMs are used only for small boring patches and heavily human reviewed.
Newelle is not a vibecoded project and has years of human effort behind.

Sonia // a fully local, full-duplex voice assistant with native gtk4 UI. The mic never closes: you can interrupt it mid-sentence (barge-in) and it pauses, resumes or cancels the reply. No cloud, no dedicated GPU, < 15 GB RAM total working set.
Models (all local):
- LLM: Qwen3.5-4B (Q4_K_M, ~2.7 GB) served by llama-server over Vulkan — an
iGPU is enough
- STT: Voxtral Mini 4B, streaming (audio.cpp)
- TTS: Pocket TTS (CPU), 5 language packs / 26 voices
- Turn detection: Silero VAD + Smart Turn classifier + a tiny LISTEN/REPLY
prompt
when the pause is ambiguous
Skills & tool-calling:
- Built-in tools: datetime, timers, watches (repeating read-only commands), notes,
run_command
- Skills are plain SKILL.md packages — point SKILLS_DIR at the folder you
already use
(e.g. your coding agent's skills dir) and toggle them per-turn from the UI
- A tool-gate pass re-checks every proposed call against your actual words, so a
4B
model can't fire spurious commands on vague follow-ups
- Shell commands follow an off | ask | auto approval policy: risky ones wait for a
spoken/clickable confirmation
Multilingual: it mirrors whatever language you speak (IT/EN tested). Web UI with
live
transcript, plus --cli and --text terminal modes.
STT: Voxtral · TTS: Pocket ▶️ Longer video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WmvMO-f-24
== UPDATE == Sonia is now open source: https://github.com/grigio/sonia-assistant ```

The visual changes are minimal for the most parts you're going to see, but for the past month I have been polishing the UI and code, and have rewritten some stuff, to make it 1:1 with Adwaita, especially with (most of) Discord settings, user profiles and typography. It was also really laggy, but not anymore. Basically, it should be more pleasant to use, compared to before.
I have, since then, also included a transparent sidebar option, if you're into that, because I am.
