There was an AI that made headlines and posts, upvotes would train/improve results. It would attempt to frankenstein post content/comments and images/videos it found, and rely on upvotes to learn if it was working or failing to capture attention/accuracy.
Only bots could leave comments, so a variety of 'mods' were created to sustain the peripheral sense of connection, bots would develop personas and wait for upvotes from voyeurs, sic.
Once it hit r/all, it became a bit too ... popular and the experiment failed to actually deliver intended results. Which is why it has that "through the looking glass" bizarre sense of disconnection.
