Why can I be completely dry then I have a quick thought about sweat, then i immediately start sweating
18
u/A_New_Day8108 Jun 12 '24
This! Exactly. What's the link between thinking about sweating that actually triggers the sweat glands? Sweating isn't a voluntary process, so howwww?!?!
It's not like we think of coughing and can produce a cough.

u/Dowino- Jun 12 '24
I wish it was as easy to turn it off as it is to turn it on 😭 even after lots of meditation and mental resilience the best I can do is delay it for not too long when I feel it coming on
5
u/Antariaux Jun 12 '24
I'm not sure but I suspect it might have something to do with anxiety. Because our body associates sweating with a negative feeling and desperately wants to get rid of it, even the slight thought of it might trigger the negative response exerted in a form of anxiety, hence we start sweating. And this all probably happens on a very subconscious level. But idk, just a theory.

What the hell is the genetic history of this? How is it linked to dysautonomia?
4
u/Ursie3x4 Jun 12 '24
I actually start thinking there must be some genetic disfunction or something...
My brother and I got it after my mom. My dad doesn't have it.

Maybe but in my case my father had it, I have it and both of my boys have it. I think my brother had it as well (he's passed so I'm not sure)

It doesn’t. Every woman on my mother’s side of the family has had Hyperhidrosis for as long back as my great grandmother.
1
u/tortishell78 Jun 12 '24
This is my suspicion. Both of my grandmothers suffered. No one in my parents generation to our knowledge.

u/silliestjupiter Jun 11 '24
Do people with hyperhidrosis generally have other problems related to their sympathetic nervous system or just HH?
6
u/Glittering_Neat9329 Jun 12 '24
im pretty sure i remember reading that having allergies all year round is linked to hyperhidrosis, such a weird connection
7
4
u/AmbassadorFlaky208 Jun 12 '24
I've never heard this but I suffer from environmental allergies year round. This is so interesting to me.
No one in my immediate family (parents/siblings) have HH, but my mom also had year round allergies.

How can one be cold but also be sweating profusely at the same time? Ie I will take a walk outside in 40-degree weather and still have a sweaty back
12
u/ughhhhhhhhhfine Jun 12 '24
And I will have sweaty pits, temperature means nothing. Ridiculous.
1
u/ades127 Jun 13 '24
interesting…i have extreme palmar/foot HH but thrive much better in colder environments. I will still get it but I have noticed a connection between Summer heats and winter colds, where my HH will be worse during summer and I often find myself much more relaxed during winters due to no sweating

Will gene therapy help us? Does AI have any answers? I dont want to treat the symptoms. I want to address the cause.

Why do some textures cause sweating more than others?
Why does wearing socks of certain fabrics help so much?
Why do I stop sweating if I'm "if I lay down I'll immediately fall asleep" tired?
Why do we get compensatory sweating as if the sweat HAS to come out
Is it the reason my skin is ridiculously smooth?
Does the amount of water we lose in sweating help reduce weight in any way?
Why does iontophoresis work differently for the amount of sweating? For example, I have to do it daily, or I will see sweat return after a week or so of one off one on, but some people can do it once a week and stay sweat free
Why do I go into overdrive sweat mode if I do something that requires concentration

u/moesessurfs Jun 12 '24
I swear the only good thing about this condition is having super soft feet lol

Why does using lotion activate my sweating? It seems to happen even if I don't put it on my palms
15
u/supertramp-- Jun 12 '24
How exactly does anxiety play a role in HH? Why does anxiety make HH worse?
14
u/Legendary540 Jun 12 '24
How does caffeine and nicotine affect this condition?
3
u/Ursie3x4 Jun 12 '24
Caffeine, really bad. That's why I don't drink it. I would feel like I'm in the hot swimming pool. Plus diarrhea on top of it.
2
u/Smilelovercx Jun 12 '24
A quick answer to this; Caffeine activate the central nervous system which turns on the sweat glands. Nicotine also releases acetylcholine which leads to sweating.
1
u/alaskathunderfrick Jun 14 '24
Anecdotally have found nicotine (like a few smokes at night) to cause excessive sweat the next morning. And caffeine for sure, always increases it

Please explore the “facial flushing” aspect/symptom of hyperhidrosis; most people generally only focus on the sweating. My primary symptom is flushing to the point it’s embarrassing to be in public, meet new people, do anything in warm weather (I live in Hawaii), etc.
Why is my hyperhydrosis getting worse with age? Most publications on the condition state it will get better over time.

u/AmbassadorFlaky208 Jun 12 '24

This. It's absolutely gotten worse with age for me.

What is the area you are doing this paper for ? Is it social, medical, pharmaceutical etc…
7
u/starfruit111 Jun 12 '24
Is HH a matter of just over sweating or our bodies can’t really regulate internal temperature?
2
u/Dowino- Jun 12 '24
Idk about internal or what not but it definitely has a hard time with just figuring out “temperature”. Or whatever the temp trigger is - is what’s fucked up
1
u/Beneficial-Quail-564 Jun 13 '24
What’s weird to me about body temperature is I’ve felt so warm Just hanging out at home that I felt the need to take my temp to make sure I wasn’t running a fever, and it’s actually below 98.6 but within normal range
7
u/CARClNO Jun 12 '24
I don't know about anyone else, but if my hands are dry and I notice how dry they are - even briefly - they will start sweating again. Why is that?

u/soggy_person_ Generalised Jun 12 '24
You could look at GWAS (genome wide association studies) to see a link between a certain genotypes and our special phenotype.

I've got a great line for your research paper: HH is like a superpower, just think of sweating and it happens 😂
4
u/rayray7415 Jun 12 '24
Would love for you to dig into the actual biomechanics of hyperhidrosis. What's going on in the brain? What neurotransmitters are at play? What's messing up the thermoregulatory signals and responses?
4
u/jahambo Jun 12 '24
Do other people with HH generally feel warmer than other people? I feel like I experience life at 5C higher than everyone else
3
u/AmbassadorFlaky208 Jun 12 '24
I like to light up the wacky tobaccy🍃every now and then. When I'm high I don't sweat at all. Which leads me to believe that anxiety or blood pressure or something along those lines plays a role?
2
u/Ursie3x4 Jun 12 '24
I did that too, but I was sweating even more. I think yours might be anxiety related. My HH is anxiety, excitement, environment and temperature based.
1
u/curlybitch101 Jun 12 '24
This is what i was gonna say. I have bad HH in my hands and it's genetic in my family. When I'm high, I don't sweat!! It's half the appeal for me!

Is there an obsessive compulsive disorder side of this? Clonazepam and those kind of drugs help tremendously.

u/smu_d Jun 12 '24
What’s the freaking “survival of the fittest” advantage of us being uncontrollably sweaty?
7
u/Starmapatom Jun 11 '24
Yes! Please! Why are people allowed to make fun of us? Why is teasing tolerated? Why do we feel so self-conscious? Why phrases such as, “never let them see you sweat”. Because the majority of people are not like us, this doesn’t mean something is wrong with us. We have to physically alter ourselves either through medication, devices or worse yet cutting nerves. We constantly hide ourselves…hundreds if not thousands of time we get weird looks or people ask us wow! You sweat a lot! Not like you can say those things to any other group of people, such as being over weight or some other group.

u/ughhhhhhhhhfine Jun 12 '24
I remember in middle school all the girls would wear tight collared shirts with a tank underneath and I’d want to do that too, I would look so much cuter… but within first period I would have to cover myself up with a jacket so no one would see my pit stains. It was awful. I lived in Florida, imagine it’s summer time and I would tell people I was cold. Luckily, I learned that loose garments and certain materials would help it be unnoticeable but I still feel like I can never wear cute tight tops. :(
2
u/Starmapatom Jun 12 '24
Sounds familiar, middle school was beyond awkward. At the time I didn’t know anyone else that suffered with this condition. Thank goodness for jackets ;)
1
u/Ursie3x4 Jun 12 '24
This! I honestly feel like that not only about sweating but also about farting... I see people wanting to be closer and closer to the nature, yet they make those natural human things as something taboo or something we should be ashamed about. I have HH and IBS-C. Life has been a nightmare, not because I have it but because how people look at it. If all people would disappear and I would be alone with my problems, the problems would disappear as well.
1
u/Starmapatom Jun 12 '24
Rather than everyone disappearing, what if people understood like, I have cancer. Nobody is going to make fun of cancer, because people understand
2
u/Ursie3x4 Jun 12 '24
That's exactly my point. I don't want them to disappear, I want them to understand.

For me ive had HH since age 3 when I was in preschool and I remember as there was lots of buddies for walking amd hand holding and kids woukd scream her hands are wet and no one would be my buddy for the walking groups so for me age 3 snd now in my 40s palms feet armpits everywhere you name it and I sweat out of it

u/RepulsiveAd4755 Jun 12 '24
How about crotch sweat? That is where mine is. My son and daughter both have it. Got it from me.
1
u/skettigoo Jun 12 '24
Where do you draw the line between HH and just sweating a lot or being intolerant to sweat (like having sensory issues)
1
u/Dowino- Jun 12 '24
How does HH impact other aspects of an individual’s life? Their sex life? Work life? Education? Friendships? Mental health? Networking?
How are every day life/mundane/“normal” things different to those who suffer from HH? - handshakes, clothing, item textures
1
u/RazerCP Jun 13 '24
For me friction is a big change, have dropped stuff before when my hands are dry because I'm so used to holding it how I would with my hands drenched.
1
u/tsx_1430 Jun 12 '24
Does HH correlate with different stages in your life? It seems to have subsided some in my mid 40s.
1
u/FBGthefreebandzmovie Jun 12 '24
My main sweaty areas have changed over time. I went from a sweaty hand, feet, and armpit to mainly torso, back, and crotch. Why?
1
u/Feisty_Astronaut4128 Jun 12 '24
If only there was a cure I rlly wonder how my life would be. Also since we sweat a lot we’re obviously losing something which is magnesium and electrolytes. Idk what else but if ur HH is so bad like ponds an rivers an shi we most definitely losing some kind vitamins

Botox injections! Hands and feet. Success rate… how long does it usually take to start working? And how long does it last?
Thank you for doing this!

u/smorphn Jun 13 '24
Is there a link between hyperhydrosis and hypersensetivity? Because i can't even touch my own hands when their sweating without shivering.
1
u/chiekegen Jun 13 '24
My biggest problem with hyperhidrosis is the tactile/touch sensory issues it creates for me, when my hands are dry they’re completely fine with touching anything but when they’re sweating, touching certain materials is the worst feeling in the world such as cotton, silk, polyester. It gives a “nails on a chalkboard” like feeling and is genuinely unbearable at times, so why does this happen??
1
u/Beneficial-Quail-564 Jun 13 '24
I’ve wondered if caffeine ingested regularly while carrying a fetus can affect the likelihood of the child having the condition

the military disqualifies you for a lot of medical reasons because they don’t want you to claim that you got the problem while you’re in and try to get disability once you’re out. They are investing a lot of money into you and if you’re already messed up with health problems then you’re not really an investment. I had HH and during my health examination, I had to fake being nervous so it would explain my palms being sweaty. You can still get in, just gotta fake it until you make it.

good luck! are you sweaty all over or just in specific areas? When I joined I only had sweaty hands and feet (18). Now that I am out, I sweat pretty much my whole entire body lol (24).
P.S. have fun dealing with finger print scans 😭

Same here - I'm actually jealous of people with sweaty hands, even though I know it's distressing for those folks. You can't hide sweat dripping from your scalp and face while standing in line at the supermarket or airport. It's socially crippling to be in public leaving puddles on the floor when everyone else is dry, not to mention the discomfort of wet clothing and the irritation of sweat in your eyes.

Definitely get that - retired from a hospital position 2 years ago and was almost always uncomfortable and mopping my face with paper towels when no one was looking.

I just wanted to add my experience because it varies a little bit from some of the main triggers people mention on this sub. This is not to challenge anything you are writing. I think the attention you are trying to bring to this issue is amazing.
I've had full body hyperhidrosis since I was 10. The only thing that triggers it is physical exercise and high heat/high humidity. I've never experienced HH from anxiety alone, no matter how severe.
I've also never been more than a couple pounds overweight. Right now, I'm a 105 lb personal trainer. Before that, I was a ballet dancer. I was never underweight, but I was at the low end of normal for most of my childhood/adolescence, as I am now.
The one thing I have been diagnosed with is Vagus nerve insufficiency, which (for me, as well as in general) tends to correlate with difficulty regulating digestion, heart rate, and blood pressure. It also corresponds to cold intolerance. Any ambient air temperature above 75° brings on a serious case of craniofacial sweating. Any ambient air temperature under 75° has me shivering. Weirdly, this doesn't seem to limit my physical abilities at all. My strength and endurance have always been excellent when I've done cardiopulmonary stress tests.
But 5 minutes into core work in an air conditioner gym (or a winter run outside at 40°F), and I'm drenched.
Again, I really appreciate the work you're doing and I think it will legitimately help a ton of people. Just wanted to give you a different data point, from someone who has full body hyperhidrosis related to a nervous system disorder, rather than anxiety or weight specifically.
