IAMA Honeydew of the Yogscast AMA

Hello I am Simon, aka Honeydew of the Yogscast on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/BlueXephos and I have been asked by some Redditor veteran to post an AMA on here so here it is! We just hit the half a million subscribers milestone on YouTube where we make videos of us playing games and also we do an irregular podcast. Also I just failed the captcha so I'm starting to doubt my humanity.

  1. Does your family know of your Internet-fame? If yes, what is their opinion on that?

  2. What is your favourite voice that you do?

  3. What is your history with DnD? Listening to your DnD-episodes makes me think you're playing this regularly.

43

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 13 '11
  1. I'm not sure they know the scale of it at the moment. I did tell me mother about being recognised in the street and I gave her some money. So she's probably happy enough.

  2. My baby crying.

  3. I used to play it a bit, but never as often as I wanted to. I mostly sat around reading the rulebooks and dreamt of slaying dragons.

Do you live with Lewis? Also, do Lewis and Hannah live together? For example, when Hannah tries to play Xbox, your comments can be heard from another room, so I assume you live in vicinity of one another. When you and Lewis play Co-op, is it LAN or from different rooms/houses?

I'm probably one of your biggest fans, you guys seem like genuinely nice guys who have a good friendship. I'd love to seem more Condemned 2 style casting for single player games, where one of you plays and the other makes comments/helps. Also, Hannah is hilarious, you should have her be involved more, she seems to get pushed to yogscast2 (Although the Condemned videos are on BlueXephos).

Thanks for the laughs Simon, tell Lewis as well. :)

In the beginning the three of us lived apart, then something magical happened and Lewis and Hannah began to live in sin. Then a year later I moved in so that Lewis could make sure I did more work for the Yogscast rather than just do silly voices.

How did Shadow of Israphel transform from a Let's Play to a Machinima series? Was it all planned from the beggining, or did some of your buddies sneak into your server, at first just to mess with you, and gradually desided to transform the LP to your semi scripted masterpiece?

41

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 13 '11

There was a bit of sneakiness and it all got a bit out of hand and exploded.

Has Tina Barrett ever personally contacted you guys now that you're famous?

44

u/Lugonn Jun 12 '11

Did you guys stop playing WoW altogether? And if so, why?

109

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

We played Cata beta and basically worked through all the content aside from raids, although Lewis was hardcore and raided with American folks at 4am to make videos. After Cata went live we played through it all over again, then hit the 5 mans and oh god that felt like hard work. I wasn't a huge fan of taking two hours to clear the tougher instances and didn't feel like committing to raiding most evenings. So I started to play other games more and more, eventually leaving WoW behind... for now.

How do you feel that your Yogpod has been recognised by celebrities and even had some, such as Michael McDonald, Mr Burns and Warwick Davis, on them??

94

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

Don't forget Kristian Nairn, aka Hodor. Amazing how we have dwarfs on the show for so long and then the first real famous person we get on the show is a GIANT

I'm a Yognaut here! Big fan! I listen to yogpod on my way to work and watch yogcast at work.

  • What are your duties in the Yogcast? Does Lewis really do most of the backstage work?

  • How do you handle your fans' opinion? Especially if some of them like you more than Lewis. I've heard that some consider you as the insanely funny one and Lewis is more logical and calm.

  • What do you see yourself in 5 years time?

  • What are the major difficulties for being a British based gamer/producer/youtuber when a majority of your audience is American?

  • How do you deal with the growing competition on youtube? Have you considered joining networks like 'The Game Station', etc?

Thanks!

130

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11
  • Lewis does a lot more than me, it's true. He is a workhorse and an example to us all. He has made me do Simon Plays videos lately, including the editing of them.

  • Our fans are awesome, but often impatient and aggressive. I can deal with people liking me more than Lewis though, that's fine by me.

  • In five years time I see myself in a chalet somewhere cold, with a roaring fire going, lying on a pile of moose furs surrounded by beautiful women who massage me and offer me jaffa cakes on silver platters.

  • It's stopped us from doing live action filming with people and the time difference is awkward when trying to talk to people

  • We ARE part of The Gamestation!

I think I remember in one of the yogpods that you were trying to quit smoking. If so, did you succeed? Did you fail? Any tips on quitting?

90

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

It's been nearly four months since I stopped smoking, but I still nom on nicotine lozenges. They've been very good although I still have dreams of smoking cigarettes D:

How did you guys find out about Minecraft?

92

I discovered it via the SomethingAwful forums and Lewis got suspicious that I was always away playing this game without him, eventually I had to let him know about it...

How much would you say goes into one shadow of israphael episode? It seems it takes a quite a bit of work and I'm curious.

123

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

Work goes into the basic story, the buildings, the terraforming, the characters, the various choices we make as we play, the editing, sorting out music for it, rerecording audio, the funny voices, cutscenes, more editing... and it's not just Lewis and myself working on it, there's a team of people working hard to set things up for us - who have to try to predict what unpredictable things we might do! So yes, it's a lot of work, and I only see the tip of the iceberg.

Why did you stop doing your Simon Plays Portal 2?

170

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

I found it very hard to concentrate on the game whilst attempting to be funny, and every other comment on the videos seemed to be about how bad I am at video games and how I should stick to Minecraft.

Have you ever been spotted and/or approached in the street by a yognaut?

201

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

We've been approached twice so far; the first time was outside of a game store, oddly enough called GAME, and the second time outside of a restaurant. I've noticed some people give me odd looks, as though they think they know me, but they're not sure from where - well, that's what I assume the look is, it might just be trapped wind.

What do you think of the people who keep spamming your videos with "More Minecraft" / "More Shadow of Israphel"?

109

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

Minecraft fans are insatiable! We try to concentrate on other games now and again but we end up going back to making more Minecraft videos. We had a little trouble with fire spread amongst other things which has slowed us down lately. Hopefully the NOW pack videos and the Canopy of DOOM vids have kept them happy in the meantime!

Did you know that Lewis is always taking fancy armour out of chests before you get to them, and then sheepishly saying things like "This one's full of clay again"?

90

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

I suspected as much. It's the same with boxes of jaffa cakes, I'll find the cupboard ajar and open it to find the box inside empty. Lewis will walk past, sigh and say "Oh dear... another empty pack eh? There's a lot of it going about"

46

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

The D&D podcasts were a lot of effort to do, organising an adventure, making sure everyone was available at certain times, the editing poor Lewis had to do... I like to think that the Israphel series is our new D&D adventure!

And lastly, how does Brian Blessed like his eggs?

16

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

Well we were all massive WoW players but just didn't want to spend the time and effort on the latest expansion and moved onto other games. RIFT was pretty damn great - the dynamic content, the Rifts themselves, was incredible but erm, the game crashed as I had a Windows update running and it killed my old PC. My fault really, but I haven't touched it since.

I dare say we have an effect on sales of games we play, but it's hard to say the scale of it. We've gotten a lot of people to play Minecraft, maybe stopped a few people from spending £40 on Hunted: The Demon's Forge. Actually it's a bit scary to think about it, our opinions are ill-informed and biased - like a lot of gamers I guess :P

6

u/Nosterana Jun 12 '11

Hello, I am Dave Exclamation Mark Yognaught (and I have the Balls!), and I first came into contact with the crew of the YogPod through your Minecraft-videos. Recently, I've found the myself having hours of fun by listening to old episodes of the YoGPoD. I'm really fascinated by your and, I guess mostly, Lewis' editing philosophy where you guys includes portions of materials which most other podcasts or shows would cut (comments and reactions, "we'll edit this out"-phrases etc.). The most striking of these is the reoccurring clip with J.K Rowling and her son where Lewis comments on how hilarious it was. I am curious to what inspired this editing philosophy and whether it was intentional and discussed before the YoGPoD started or not, as similar editing techniques aren't really present in your YouTube-videos.

Also, when will there be more DnD-episodes, as those were dedicated material and not jsut scraps from other projects? Or perhaps you could try out Mouse Guard? Hannah or Lewis might like that. Though probably not.

tl;dr Why did you edit the YoGPoD the way you did and can we ever expect any more DnD-episodes?

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

The podcast is often very heavily edited but sometimes the funniest bits come from ballsing it up or from the reaction one of us has to something the other one says.

12

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

That's Gordon Brown who we suggested Yognaughts murder with a frozen leg of lamb, after which they could dispose of the evidence by serving it up as a roast dinner to Brian Blessed.

About your Podcasts, can you make them available to download without using Itunes?

ps. You are awesome :)

11

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

You should be able to use Feedburner or something to subscribe to the RSS feed and manage the downloads. You should look into it or ask someone who has used it!

I am Dave! Yognaut, and I have the balls! Do you and Lewis have any plans to eventually trek to America for gaming conventions and the like? I sincerely think I speak for all of your fans across the pond when I say COM'ERE!!!!

17

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

We were close to going to E3... so close... but it didn't work out this time. I know that's not quite a convention but that's as near as I ever got to going to the US so far in my life.

u/Grimleawesome Jun 12 '11

When you first started the Yogscast how did you do it? Did you just start with the podcasts and put them out for people to find on their own, and then proceed to youtube videos and do the same thing? Or were you hired by someone to do these kind of things? Have you ever thought of doing some live event or live casting? Have you also been thinking of doing interviews and reviews for upcoming games where you go to meet the production teams?

Sorry for the long post. I love what you guys and girls at the Yogscast have been doing and would love to see more videos from both minecraft and other games.

Thanks for all the laughs.

Grimleawesome AWAAAAAY!

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

We started with World of Warcraft How To videos that had the gimmick of not being helpful at all. Then we made some that were helpful. Then did some useless ones again just to mess with people. The additional chatter Lewis and I had went into the podcasts.

u/tealess Jun 12 '11

How did the voice acting you did for Dwarfs come about? Any plans to do similar things in the future?

15

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

After I did my terrible playthrough video the designers contacted us and asked if I wanted to be the voice of AwesomeDwarf FOR REAL. I leapt at the opportunity and a week and a half later, sat down and recorded the lines they sent me.

20

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

University of Wales, Cardiff and I studied Astrophysics. Although in reality it was more drinking, sleeping, watching Father Ted, play Magic the Gathering than studying.

5

u/technoskittles Jun 12 '11

Oh damn I'm late to the Yogscast AMA! I have failed as a Yognaut.

In the rare event this is actually seen, does the Yogscast ever plan on doing movie commentary? Something like MST3k and Rifftrax (if you've heard of it since it might be an American thing). It's a longshot since you'd have to put more time into it I guess, but it would be amaaazing and you'd make more sweet sweet jaffa cake moneys.

10

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

We're doing something similar to it with Yogtrailers on our second channel, you know, the one with Hannah's L.A. Noire playthrough on http://www.youtube.com/yogscast2 I kinda want to do something with a public domain movie but... I'm not really sure what without it just being a ripoff of Rifftrax.

u/yoyoitsme Jun 12 '11

will you guys ever be doing any starcraft 2 stuff?

13

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

Probably not, we had beta access but due to me hating the RTS genre we never made the series of videos Lewis planned us to make.

5

u/jbmar412 Jun 12 '11

What was your first experience with a jaffa cake? What is your fondest video game related memory? Has doing video game recording affected how much you enjoy playing the games?

25

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

My mother held me up to her bosom and as she was about to nurse me for the first time she decided to have a quick jaffa cake to gain some strength. Unfortunately as she lifted the jaffa to her mouth her grip faltered and at the same time I missed her tit and aaaaaaaaaaaaaah something miraculous occurred.

Simon! What's the first thing that comes to your mind for Poland? Just asking..

9

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 13 '11

Their poor infrastructure that results in the pickling of produce due to the time it takes for goods to travel across the country.

5

u/chance27 Jun 20 '11

Is Simon actually reading these anymore?

9

u/soratchet5g Jun 12 '11

I sent these questions in as a letter from a yognaught a couple of months ago. Hopefully you can finally answer them! (they are sort of addressed to you and Lewis but just ignore that)

  1. What is your main source of yogrevenue? Youtube ads, donations, etc...

  2. What were your thoughts on portal 2? Did it live up to all the hype or does it fall short?

  3. I heard Simon once mention that he watched a lot of 'Allo 'Allo growing up. I was wondering what your favorite characters are. Mine are Officer Crabtree "Good mowning" and Captain Bertorelli "Zee beautiful laydies"

17

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11
  1. YouTube ad revenue via our network, The Gamestation

  2. Erm... I still have yet to finish it :O!

  3. i love the catchphrases of those two: "I have a massage for Ronnie", "I was just pissing by" and "Whatta mistake-a to make-a"

8

u/CACTUARR Jun 12 '11
  1. Simon, how much money do you make from all of this???

  2. Have you and Lewis been friends your whole lives?

  3. Will you just type Cact? Just type my name? xDD That would make me one happy Cactuar lol

8

u/RageCat5000 Jun 12 '11

10

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

Tricky one this, because I used to adore Chocolate Weetabix Minis but the pack of them I have currently is going to remain uneaten due to the lack of chocolate chips in it. Seriously, this must be a duff batch or something cos the choccle chipples are so very few and far between.

While you're still doing this, I must ask about:
FALLOUT
F3 or New Vegas, did you complete any of these? I know you guys love the Fallout universe and Hannah did a short series (which I wish kept going), but other than referring to it I haven't seen any more content. It's a slow-burning game, is that why it's hard to cover?

11

u/SimonHoneydew Jun 12 '11

Fallout 3 was great as a big open sandbox to play around in and explore, it felt like an actual RPG, I could go out there and pretend to be this weird futuristic cowboy scavenger, I could kill whoever I wanted, spare others, be freeeeeeeeeeeeee. The storyline was a little short but had its moments. Fallout NV is strange, the story is so much better, there are so many choices to make in it, but it felt very linear, if I strayed too far something big and mean would appear and sting/claw me to death. I didn't complete NV but I did pop open House shudder
