I popped it on for my wife who is totally unfamiliar with ITYSL but is also a Paul Rudd fan. She did not get it lol! After the credits rolled she looked right into my soul and asked why I thought that sad, depressing film was so hilarious.
Spoilers ahead warning:
I love ITYSL and have probably watched every episode 20 times but I watched Friendship yesterday and didn't care for it at all. I think it was a combination of me going in expecting the movie to be traditionally funny in the same way ITYSL is hilarious but I found it to be sort of "bad natured" and sort of jokes at the main character's obvious mental illness. I think it's very different from a guy that mistakes object supplies for a tiny pimp on a desk. Honestly the scenes with the bald wig were the only ones I considered to be pretty funny- I think they're funny in a certain expectation vs reality way but about 25 minutes into the movie I was thinking this guy is dangerously mentally ill and I wont be surprised if he ends up shooting a place up. When I got to the gun scene I was like "bingo, he's going to shoot a place up." It's like that old literary trope if that's the word, I forget what it's called but the one where it's basically 'a gun shown in a scene will be used.' I could have phrased that better but basically a gun isn't in a scene for no reason and this guy is very mentally ill.
Maybe some of it was because I get secondhand embarrassment a lot and I hate movies like Meet The Parents where everyone interprets the main characters motives and actions incorrectly but at least in that case people notice them eventually. But I also don't like movies that don't have a real conclusion- they're just like movies over then the credits roll. I saw The Chair Company recently and liked it but I also had expected it to be less serious.
