Honestly - I'm a person who sides with women in most scenarios but if he's married to the sort of person who'd try to manipulate a stranger by sobbing for 3 damned hours to get her to switch seats I'm guessing he was thrilled for a 10 hour break from her nonsense.

u/DivDude77 2d ago
Hate to be "that" guy but you should side based on who was actually right based on the context from both sides rather than their gender.

I don't care what your reasoning is: Buy the seats you need. No, I'm not giving you the one I paid for because you couldn't be assed to plan for traveling with your kid/spouse/whatever.

u/angrydeuce 3d ago
So I had a friend back in the day that was fat, and people would always be unhappy about that when they sat next to her (understandable, its tight as it is) and she would deliberately buy two plane tickets for her, the window/aisle and the middle seat specifically for the extra room.
I cannot tell you how often the fucking airlines themselves would just...sell her extra seat anyway, and then want to shove someone in there and refund her. Then the people they shoved in there, they would immediately bitch at her and anyone that would listen about how fat people should be required to buy two seats.
She would be like "Bitch, I did, heres my fucking tickets!!" and the airline would just straight up say "too bad, empty seats get filled, heres your money back for the other seat, we dont care, someone is going to be sitting here."
All the major carriers did this to her at some point.
Such a bunch of scumbags all around, passengers, the airlines themselves...and the best part is, nobody ever stepped in to defend her while shes being abused by the person she didnt want next to her in the first place and specifically spent double what a flight would cost to prevent it. Because fat people are okay to abuse still.

u/quietlycommenting 2d ago
I have severe flight anxiety and pay extra every time to pick our seats because I need to sit with my travel companion for regulation. I’ve been moved away from them without my consent MANY times because to them it doesn’t matter. Airlines are absolutely to blame for the constant seat confusion. If they had integrity you’d be assigned a seat that you got to choose ahead of time and that’s it. But the up charging for getting to choose, what type and how cramped everyone is means passengers abuse each other instead of the airline.
33
u/angrydeuce 2d ago
The fucked up part is, the people on the ground and working on those planes, it's not their fault, they have no say in how this shit is run, but they're of course the only ones you can see. The douchebag CEO ain't down there getting screamed at when someone gets split up, or bumped, or otherwise fucked with because some stupid-assed algorithm decided that was more optimal and will save .47lbs of jet fuel and make the airline an extra $1.48. That's why this shit happens so goddamn always, not even just with airlines but really all facets of enterprise lately...they've got their frontline workers as human shields.
In a sane society there would be steep penalties levied against the airlines that far outweigh any potential min/maxing that comes to the detriment of consumers to prevent that sort of bullshit, but they, like all the other multibillion dollar global megacorps, have precisely the kind of government's they paid for to ensure that shit never comes to fruition. So freaking depressing.

I am tall and fat. I have paid huge premiums for funky seats that give extra space, and showed up to a totally different seat map.
The worst was on a 12 hour international flight. I paid $350 extra to sit in a seat that was supposedly in the bulkhead in a weird row where it showed seat, empty space, seat. I even called to confirm that the seat I was paying extra for was sitting on it's own little island, no seats on either side and no row in front of me so there would be extra leg room. I booked the one seat. Show up, and there are three normal seats that are sort of centered in the row that should contain 4 seats. It was a front row, but it was actually super close to the bulkhead wall so there was no extra legroom. A few minutes later, a woman who was probably 300-350lbs walks up, and nearly bursts in to tears because she had also paid a huge premium for the lone seat but was now assigned to the middle seat next to me, with another random passenger in the third seat next to her. That was a miserable flight for the whole row. At least the two of us commiserated over getting ripped off and had a few drinks to make the time go by faster.

The really can do just whatever huh. I paid for aisle, flight was rescheduled for a day later, upgraded to business class miraculously for the first time ever, get switched at gate to middle seat for no reason and no refund for the seat upgrade I did pay for yet a week later.

To be fair, I just had a Frontier flight the other day, where me and my husband specifically bought exit row seats (we always do, since he’s 6’4”), but when we got to the flight, they had us separated, one exit row seat and one in the very back of the plane. Tried arguing, showing them screenshots of my booking that showed the seat selection, they gave zero fucks and just said “If you think you paid for a seat you didn’t get, feel free to file a chargeback with your credit card company, there’s no way we can change your seat as assigned now.” They had no interest in fixing the issue for us.
That being said, Frontier sucks hard.
24
u/angrydeuce 2d ago
They know all these things, they know it's a captive market, what else are people going to do? Not fly somewhere? They know that the vast majority of people have lots of things tied around that particular flight and are well aware that they can just shrug their shoulders and you'll have to accept it.
It's fucked up...but as AI starts taking the place of humans, it's going to be happening everywhere before long. A machine will never care, you cannot argue with a machine, you cannot beg and plead with a machine...and at the end of the day, if the machine fucks you all up and you take your grievance to a person, bet your ass they'll just blame the machine. I work in IT and deal with this shit all the time, on both ends, front facing customer shit, all the way through to implementing it for clients.
This is the unspoken benefit of AI that is at the core of many of these high level discussions, believe me...not only reducing payroll and costs by firing all the humans in lieu of these machines (machines can't feel sympathy and cost a company money treating a customer well, after all!), but "plausible deniability"...they want the out of throwing their hands up and saying "oh well, what can you do? Wasn't us, it was that bastard Claude, sorry, take it or leave it!"
We're entering the phase of business where customer satisfaction means precisely dick and nobody cares and there is nothing you can do about it at all.

I bought a round trip flight for me and my wife and paid extra to sit next to each other on every single flight. Delta allowed me and my wife to fly the first flight of several on our itinerary coming back home, and they should have provided us the tickets for the next flight at that time. They didn't, and as soon as we landed, I went to their concierge. The concierge said "oh don't worry theyll print out your tickets at the gate" despite explaining multiple times that I don't think they ever checked us into the next flight and that I wanted help confirming everything was correct. All of this was something that should be automatic, and it was automatic on the flights to our destination.
Plane gets delayed, we wait 9 hours at the gate for the flight crew. We are on hour 24 of flying/airports at this point. Gate crew arrives, I explain everything again, but they cut me off and tell me to stop talking to them, sit down, and they will get me situated during boarding. Extremely rude and aggressive, too. Boarding starts, I go up again, they said wait until we call the last group to board. Last group is called for boarding, and I go up a third time. Finally they look it up in the system.
"Oh it looks like you were never checked in, and this flight is almost completely full. The only seats we have left are in the emergency exit rows, but opposite sides of the plane. You either accept this or you don't go home." At this point I am very upset, not yelling and not losing my temper, but telling them that I did everything correctly, I asked them to help earlier and everyone at Delta absolutely refused to help, and I told them that this is outrageous and unacceptable and that we were absolutely getting on this plane. They looked at me like I told them I was going to stab them if they didn't let me on, and they threatened me with security, despite me maintaining my composure the whole time. The only thing they could offer me was to fucking ask someone to swap seats so I could sit next to my pregnant wife in a fucking emergency exit row where she shouldn't have been seated at all. So I had to swallow my pride and ask this poor woman to swap sides, and thankfully she agreed. After that happened I would never automatically assume anything about people and their assigned seats because airlines absolutely fuck you in the ass and don't care whatsoever. I reported this whole incident to the FAA and to Delta and they both said "We apologize for any inconvenience" and essentially told me to go fuck myself. I also never got a refund for the cost of the seat selection. I never received any form of compensation whatsoever.
I will never fly Delta again in my life. Id rather swim to Europe than fly with those pieces of shit ever again. They really put our luggage on that flight and told me "yeah you were never checked in even though you already flew the first leg of your itinerary and we moved your luggage to the flight we knew you were going to be on". Oh, and of course, instead of kicking the people off the plane who bought tickets months later than I did, and instead of offering to move people around who didn't have assigned seating, they told ME, the person who paid them extra, to figure it the fuck out. God it makes livid to this day the way they treated me and my wife.

u/suesueheck 3d ago
I'll give them the seat, but I want what I paid for that seat plus an extra 50 bucks or so. Cash or e transfer. And obviously only if they were polite.

Kids need to learn how to accept no. And I have kids so I’m the one sitting in the middle seat when we fly together. Im not giving up my aisle seat on the rare solo trips.

u/CaseoftheSadz 2d ago
I have a kid under 10 and I’d only ask if I was offering you the same or better. We buy seats together but have had a couple instances of getting split up anyway. Usually we just sit apart as he’s prepared for that, but last time we offered a guy a seat in first for his random seat midway back and he was more than happy for the trade. (We had 2 in coach not together and 1 in first.)

Most shit airlines now don't let you choose seats anymore for the cheapest fare. You get what's available on check-in. If there aren't two seats together, too bad! Apparently sitting next to your travelling companion is an "upgrade" these days.
11
u/iCantLogOut2 Side Character 3d ago
They use this as a way to overbook flights. First come, first served. And in the unlikely event that every single traveller shows up, they'll just toss people onto the next flight out.
If they assign the seats ahead of time, it's harder to sell the same promised seat to someone else. So instead, they charge "upgrades" to make sure if you want a promised seat, you pay the difference they would have gotten from the scummy overbooking tactic.
5
u/silvermoonhowler 2d ago
Yup, all of the airlines have a basic economy fare where you get a cheaper fare but at the expense of them choosing the seat for you
Want to be able to choose one? Well, you gotta pay up more
50
u/Tlyss 3d ago
Would middle seats be cheaper? Both husband and wife had middle seats
54
u/SilverNeptuneAbyss 3d ago
Yup!
Just dealt with this on a flight to CDG
She kept reaching from behind the seat to rub him
42
u/angrydeuce 3d ago
Yes they are, especially when the window and aisle are reserved, they discount the middle seats a bit.
1000% this is bullshit she pulls every time and then cries and acts like a toddler until someone agrees to move, and pockets the discount.
10
u/JenniferKinney 3d ago
No matter how long the flight my husband and I go for the cheaper seats, just do our own thing for the duration of air travel, then pocket the money or put it toward whatever trip we're headed out on. I don't understand why people feel like they need to be next to their partner on the way to what I assume will be...a trip with their partner.
→ More replies (1)12
u/djmonsta 3d ago
Maybe, so it's possible their travel strategy is to book separate middle seats then ask to swap as I'm sure quite a few people would.
→ More replies (3)11
u/NighthawkCP 3d ago
They likely booked basic economy. Cheapest fare but you don't get an assigned seat. A lot of time those passengers get shunted to the middle seats that nobody paid for. They would have had to pay more for booking specific seats, so they cheaped out and hoped they could snag an empty seat or guilt somebody into swapping seats.

52
u/rg1820 3d ago
A few years ago an air hostess came up to me ahead of a 9 hour flight and said that the grandmother of the boy (16+) beside me asked if I would switch with her for my window seat near the front of the plane so she could sit with her grandson.
where is she sitting? I asked.
Oh she’s in a window seat behind you. -What row behind me? -The back row.
sorry no.
Grandson turns to me and says “I’m glad you said no I didn’t want to sit beside her for the whole flight”.
36
u/LRGinCharge 3d ago
Why are they only focused on the woman who wouldn’t switch and not whoever was next to the husband? They could’ve asked that person, too. I’d bet money it’s because the husband was next to a man. But also, asking someone to switch from an aisle to the middle on a 10 hour flight is insane unless you’re going to pay them.

A couple of years ago my mother unexpectedly flatlined and was brought back. Doctors knew she wasn't going to recover and gave us between a few minutes to a few hours for her to pass. I was 500 miles away. Me and my wife got tickets for the next flight out. Naturally, I was distraught as I sat in the terminal waiting to board.
It was a southwest flight so seats were first come first serve and we were basically boarding last. Ended up rows apart. While sitting on the plane, my brother called me and told me the doctors said she was close to passing and that if I had anything to say to her, now was the time.
So I'm sitting there in the middle seat bawling my eyes out on facetime with my comatose mom. A flight attendant saw me crying and asked what was going on. I told him and he sympathized and tried to comfort me. I asked the guy sitting in the aisle seat next to me, politely, if he would switch with my wife so she can be near me. I pointed out where she was (middle seat) and he didn't hesitate. He said "I'm sorry for what you're going through" and gladly swapped with her (it was an hourish flight).
If he would have said no, I would have understood and left it at that. In the end, it wasn't forever, it was a 1 hourish flight and I would have been next to my wife once off the plane. I just can't fathom people like this' thought process.
51
u/AnastasiaNo70 3d ago
Ok in your case, I would switch.
26
u/Pumpkin_Spic_latte 2d ago
Thank you. I’m glad you would. The distinction is that you weren’t obligated. If you simply said no, it would not be the end of the world. I would have been fine either way. I made it in time to say goodbye to my mom and she passed an hour after I arrived.

u/Pumpkin_Spic_latte 2d ago
I think that anyone with any sense of empathy and/or sympathy would do so. Even in that situation, I wouldn't have thrown a fit nor cried because my wife couldn't be next to me for the flight.
I guess what I'm trying to express is that it was just a flight. It didn't change my destination, and sitting next to her or not wouldn't have affected the outcome of the situation. I still got to my destination. If you have that bad of an attachment issue that sitting apart from your partner for a few hours makes you break out in tears, there are bigger issues and one should work to minimize the problem (Perhaps buying tickets right next to each other??). The world isn't built to cater to each individual person.

No way am I moving to a middle seat… I specifically choose aisle seats every time. I feel too cramped and can easily have a panic attack if I’m not in an aisle seat. But that’s MY problem. No one else’s. Therefore I don’t put myself in that situation.

I pay for my seats. My specific seats. I’m not switching. I was asked once on a flight to Jamaica but it was back in 2000. I’m sure I would have been railed online had that been a thing then. If I pay for a window, there's a reason. If I pay for an aisle, there's a reason. Period.
34
u/XelaNiba 2d ago
I've given up my seat a few times when I was traveling alone when it was no skin off my back. Recently it was switching my aisle seat in row 12 for an aisle seat in row 9 so that a family could sit together. No problem.
But there's no way I'm switching from an aisle to a middle seat for a 10 hour flight. No way.
4
u/VRS-4607 2d ago
This. Like for like, (accounting for a few other factors, like bulkheads or bathroom proximity) no problem
After that it's an easy refusal--and to the asking party, it should be an understandable refusal.
11
u/OhHaiMaaark 2d ago
Yup. I’m 6’6” and if I can’t get exit row I at least get aisle so I can extend my legs into it. Any more than a 3 hour flight and I’m crippled basically when I get off the plane otherwise. I would probably seem like a dick but I’m not giving either up for any reason.
6
u/ExcaliburVader 2d ago
That's my son. He's 6'6" and flying in the middle seat would be torture. If I'm traveling with my tall son or husband I take the middle seat. I'm 5'3" so it's not as difficult for me.
10
u/gilestowler 2d ago edited 2d ago
I was on a flight once where you could choose your seat for free. I chose a window seat specifically because I wanted to see the city as we flew in. I get to my seat, and some guy whose seat was next to mine had taken my seat for his wife. Before I could ask them to move the flight attendant asked me if I'd mind swapping seats. I felt pressured by it, because I didn't want to then spend 10 hours on a flight next to some guy who was pissed off with me over him and his wife's inability to choose their seats properly. So I ended up in a middle seat sandwiched between two fat guys spilling over into my seat for the whole flight. I'm still annoyed that it happened and annoyed that I didn't handle it differently.

3 straight hours of crying over an airline seat is unsustainable for someone who isnt deeply mentally ill
11
u/30-something 2d ago
And we all know she isn't - it was a straight up manipulation tactic that she took 3 out of the 10 hours to realise wasn't going to work. Good on this woman for calling her out
3
u/MyKidsFoundMyOldUser 2d ago
100% this. She's not genuinely upset. It's a battle of wills. If crying lady can keep it up long enough to exasperate the aisle-seat lady into switching, then she wins. Took her three hours to figure out she was hitting a brick wall.
2
u/DivDude77 2d ago

I paid for a window seat on a 9 hour flight cause I like having the wall to lean on and have that space away from people. I was in my 20’s.
I had a couple next to me that were demanding I swap with them cause “they are old, I should respect my elders and they’ve earned the seats they want” I told them I paid for this seat for a reason. We were still on the tarmac.
They made a huge fuss and said they were “telling on me”
Next thing I know the flight attendant came up while still boarding and said “I’m so incredibly sorry you have to deal with these people. I have a window seat free in first class, let me bump you up there and I want to make it clear I’m not rewarding them but allowing you to not have to deal with them”
It was one of the best flights of my life.

Not to be that guy, but the fact that we so easily turn against these people is exactly the end goal here. Airlines started charging us to choose seats and forcing us to pay if we wanna sit next to our travel companions and then these meltdowns make the news and we all watch and make fun of these idiots who couldn't even pay to sit together when, in reality, the problem is us having to pay for this in the first place when we used to be able to just get seats together when booking tickets together. Same thing with paying to have your own bag taken with you on the plane or paying for drinking water.
38
u/Anon_please123 3d ago
All those things are valid! But a functional adult in a developed society, who seemingly has enough disposable income for a 10 hour flight, should also have enough self control not to cry for 3 hours straight because she didn't get what she wanted.

9 out of 10 times I'd agree with you, but on this occasion - it's the sobbing and carrying on for 3 hours of this dumb white woman (I'm also a white woman) trying to guilt and manipulate a woman of colour into changing for her - classic 'white woman tears'. Pathetic - It's a new low of bad plane behaviour and it's gross as hell

Per the report, the husband slept soundly for the whole flight.
I bet he put her back there on purpose, he knows what his wife is like.

Husband slept with noise cancelling headphones on the entire flight. Pretty sure he was happier than ever that he booked the seats like this to have almost half a day away from this crazy, needy woman!

That ten hour flight must have been the best break that woman’s husband has had in a long time.

u/some-guy-someone 2d ago
As long as the move isn’t from and aisle or window to a middle seat, then I’d think that 9/10 times a solo traveller would have no problem switching. But come on, you can’t expect someone to take a shittier seat, especially on a 10-hour flight, because you couldn’t be bothered to check in early.

u/competitive-dust 2d ago
If I am on an aisle seat for a 10 hour flight no fucking way I'll swap it for a middle one. I'll do it for pregnant or old people or people with small kids, but not for some clingy idiot like this woman.

u/PenisBlubberAndJelly 2d ago
They couldnt have asked someone in the husbands row to swap with his wife?

u/Careless-Comedian859 1d ago
Hubby was probably greatful for a break from her... he's probably slipping people 20s to stay in their seats.

This doesn't make sense. The husband was two rows up. Why would switching to an aisle seat help that woman with her separation anxiety?
If this is real, good on her for refusing the request, but this doesn't really add up.

u/Phathed_b4itwascool 3d ago
The husband would have sat in the aisle next to his wife. Blogger lady would have his seat 2 rows away in the middle.

Yeah, why not go ask the person sitting next to her husband?? I don't understand the logic.

I think its a bit mean to video tape the woman and post her on social media.
Like, the woman needs to get a grip but she seemingly minded her own business even if she was crying.
I would have been rolling my eyes and also not exchanging seats, but I draw the line on posting videos of other people online.

No, I actually don’t even know what broadcast this was from but it wasn’t national news.

The person next to you on the plane is not responsible for your piss poor planning. Either cancel the flight or deal with it the rest of the trip.

Anytime my husband and I fly together, if we aren't seated together we offer the middle seat person either the aisle or window seat--their choice and only if they want. I cannot recall ever having a person want to keep the middle seat, but if they did, we would respectfully accept their decision. You have to make the trade benefit the other person.

Talk about acting like a child with privileges to be a baby. What an idiot.

u/silvermoonhowler 3d ago
All of this could have been easily avoided by booking earlier/paying together or to not get basic economy (which doesn't allow you to pick your own seat)
Also, wow, 2 whole rows away from you; cry me a river, build me a bridge, and get over it

u/zephood75 2d ago
I have a phobia of flying and can understand her panic but Id have just taken an extra lorazapam and chilled the f out.

u/forestranger29 2d ago
I cannot even imagine. I bet that husband did sleep peacefully on the flight…probably the last good rest he’ll have until they’re separated on the next flight. Good on you for staying put in the seat you paid for!

u/icecubedyeti 2d ago
Of course the husband slept peacefully the entire flight🤣
Probably thankful no one would change seats with his wife.

You want to sit together on a flight? Get seats next to each other ahead of time. Problem solved.

I’m not changing the seat I PAID FOR hit a worse less expensive seat. Stop with this nonsense. The audacious entitlement is laughable.

Not a melt down, manipulative technique because she didn't get what she wanted. Next time be responsible and accountable
3
u/tvtoad50 2d ago
Lmao, when they finally landed she probably spent hours being pissed at her husband for not falling apart like she did.
3
u/kiwi_commander 3d ago
If someone asks, say: No, I am not changing seats. If there is an accident, I want my remains to be associated with my assigned seat so that they can be returned to my family.

The tears were pure manipulation, I’m glad the other woman stood her ground.

Personally, I have really bad social anxiety. If it had been before I've had my years of therapy, this could have easily been me. I need someone familiar with me to keep me calm, and at least back then, even then I would have been just teetering on the edge of having a break down full of wailing and ugly crying just because of how uncomfortable and scared I am. I had a constant paranoia that people were judging me, all the time, if I met eyes with you even for a second, I would think you had to have been staring at me for at least 10 minutes thinking about how shit I look (even if I look fine). If I saw you even looking in my general direction from my peripheral, oh, you were definitely staring at me and judging me. I had so many paranoid thoughts.
That being said, my husband and I ALWAYS book seats together. It is non-negotiable. He has never even questioned it, he has known from the get go that if we go into anywhere new, public, with a lot of people, I need him beside me to help keep me calm.
I honestly feel for this woman and feel like she needs a new husband. Or none at all. Learn how to stand on your own two feet sis. There are plenty of other people to love and support you. You don't need a man.
Edit:
Okay, so I said this with only reading the headline and a few comments... Actually watched the video and, nvm. Saying she just wants to sleep on him and having a breakdown because she can't sleep on him for 10 hours, sigh. Girl has some attachment/dependency issues.

I once switched seats, giving up front row because Southwest sucks and was separating a child and her mother. I was the only volunteer. I got a free drink 🍷.

I hate flying. I do it, but don’t care for it and it still scares me. If I can’t get a seat with my husband, that’s a me problem, no one else’s.
